So apparently the First Annual tumblr TV awards are going on right now. So in the best ship categories its down to 5 couples: Faberry and Britanna from Glee, Sherlock and Watson on Sherlock, Dean and Cas from Supernatural, and Dair from Gossip Girl. Like this year's E!-online poll, only one of the finalists is a straight couple, but the rest are same-sex. Which is an interesting trend. Is it that people who vote in such polls (or are vocal about "shipping") tend to favor same-sex couplings?

And is it a sign that the world is more accepting of homosexuality, or that those that are accepting have cornered modern media? Of course, another data point is of those 4 same sex couples, only 1 of those (Santana and Brittany) are an actual gay couple. The rest are non-canon. And among those three, only in the Sherlock/Watson case did the show have characters outright ask them, "Are you guys gay for each other?" The other two couplings are just supposed subtext and only in the minds of some viewers.

The finalists in the other categories that are still open: under a cut )

It looks like voting has either ended on the other categories (or hasn't entered final voting)

Heh, [livejournal.com profile] isabel79 saw POTO this weekend, and I'm amused that given the number of times she's seen it, I have not been there for any of them! But given I saw Wicked this weekend, it had me wondering how many musical soundtracks did I have that I haven't actually seen the musical for:

-Avenue Q
-Jersey Boys
-Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
-Spring Awakening

Hey, only four. Hopefully I'll see Priscilla one of the time I'm up in NYC later this year. And I think Avenue Q is still showing on Broadway. But alas, I don't think there's any chance to see Spring Awakening. Though I don't actually have that big an interest in seeing Jersey Boys.

I at least have seen the movie versions of:

-Annie (though i have the music from the remake with Victor Garber, not the original movie)
-Godspell (hey, its back on Broadway! There's this one Disney Flip chick on it. Which is the extent of what I know about this new version)
-Hairspray
-Jesus Christ Superstar
-Little Shop of Horrors (though I hardly remember it)
-Phantom of the Opera (I recently replaced the movie soundtrack version on my ipod with the original cast recording)

But like Spring Awakening, I don't think there's a way to see the stage production versions of some of those anymore.

And the ones where i've seen the actual musical and the movie (if there was one):

-Mamma Mia! (surprisingly, I only have a couple of songs from the actual play, but that's because I already have a lot of Abba on my ipod)
-Rent (its the movie version soundtrack on my ipod, though I do have a song or two from the original cast recording.)
-Rock of Ages
-Wicked

So I guess I have a decent number of Musicals on my ipod. Of course, there's also music from musical movies:

-Across the Universe (it still annoys me that the version of "All You Need" is love on the soundtrack doesn't have the "He loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah" in the background at the end- they had it in the movie, and in the original song! Its total BS!)
-Bandslam (And you can be sure I'll be getting the soundtrack to Joyful Noise when that comes out)
-Burlesque
-Camp Rock
-Camp Rock 2
-Dr. Horrible's Singalong Blog
-Enchanted (I wasn't sure if I should count this and not other Disney movies, otherwise I'd have to add Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and the Little Mermaid)
-HSM
-Lemonade Mouth

And then if we go to songs from TV shows, I do have every song ever done on Glee (that was released) plus songs from the soundtracks to the musical themed episodes of Buffy, Grey's Anatomy, and Scrubs. Plus, released songs from American Dad, HIMYM, Pushing Daisies (I'm annoyed they never released Chenoweth's version of "Eternal Flame") , Ruby and the Rockets, and Victorious.

Despite all this though, I still think the majority of my music is actual music that gets played on the radio.

TV Commentary:

Pushing Daisies- Its sad that after this ep, there's just one more ep. As I said, since it had been so long between ABC canceling it and showing the remaining eps, I had forgotten what a funny and clever show this is. These eps just serve to strike home how much it sucks this show was canceled. spoiler cut )
geebs: (Default)
I'm glad ABC is showing the remaining eps of "Pushing Daisies", its too bad they didn't advertise it worth crap. Like if it still wasn't on the DVR as a show to record (and if [livejournal.com profile] clevemire hadn't mentioned it), I wouldn't have known it was on. In any case, how I've missed this show. I forgot how clever and witty the dialogue was, well how great the cast and the overall feel of the show was. Its a shame that just wasn't good enough to keep it alive.

Heh, they sure are fans of having Kristen Chenoweth sing though. I mean, they've had Ellen Greene sing once (or was it twice? I just remember the time when Vivian and Olive did "Birdhouse in Your Soul), but it seems they've had Olive sing several times ("Hopelessly Devoted to You", "Eternal Flame", and now Lionel Richie's "Hello", all of which are awesome songs).

So every now and then I'll be flicking through the channels and catch an ep of "Deadliest Warrior". While it is an interesting show concept, I think a lot of the comparisons are faulty. I think one ep was "Spartan vs Ninja". I didn't actually watch that ep, but shouldn't it come down to the situation?! I think if a Spartan went face to face with a ninja, he'd eviscerate the guy. But a ninja isn't gonna take a Spartan face to face, he'll sneak in and cut his throat in his sleep.

The ep I was just watching was Samurai vs Viking. They compare the weapons used on straight power, and again, I think that's a faulty test of which is better. I do find it weird they put the great axe and katana in the same category, but put the naginata up against the long sword. I would think you would flip that and compare the swords and the shaft weapons against each other. And then they compare the Viking long spear against the Japanese long bow? Its not like the Vikings didn't use bows, and the spear has utility as a melee weapon in addition to being thrown. How can you say one is better than the other? You wouldn't use them in the same situation!

I'm amused how at the end they plug the data they collected into a "sophisticated computer simulation" program and that determines the winner. Like how does it do this? Particularly if its just based on the straight "stats" of the weapon. Its not the weapon, its how you use it! The samurai ended up winning, which is what I suspect would happen, because I think skill beats out brute force any day. Well, overall. I think on a one on one fight, its anybody's game, but a better comparison would be the Vikings raiding a Samurai protected village, and I think in that situation, the Samurai would be able to repel the attack, so in that way I agree with their final assessment.

There was another one the other day, Green Beret vs Spetsnaz. That was fraught with faulty comparisons. For one, even though they're both "Special Forces" they have different roles. Spetsnaz are mostly raiders- spearheading assaults or getting behind enemy lines and personally cause as much havoc as possible. The green berets do some of that, though in a force multiplier kinda way- advising and training the forces of friendly governments in the case of helping them defend against insurgents. Or on the other side of things, training resistance forces and developing alliances with the oppressed peoples by using the Green Berets' engineering and medical skills to improve their quality of life. And by nature of the US taking all sorts of "peacekeeping" roles, I think the Green Berets are more well rounded. I guess this is "Deadliest Warrior", not "Best Warrior", its just even though the Spetsnaz are extremely tough bad-asses and in a knock down drag out melee, would win more often than not, I don't think you can boil it down to who's better on who would win in a one on one match up.

But there were a lot of holes in that ep overall. I think the Green Berets are better equipped in general, because our stuff is better. I mean, weapons like the Kalashnikov are extremely reliable, but they're better suited in the hands of poorly trained rank and file. The M4 is a precision weapon, and way more adaptable with the various things you can mount on the picatinny rails. Plus, I think they compared a normal M4 chambered in 5.56mm, when Special Forces has a little more leeway in their weapons, and have weapons chambered in more powerful calibers like 6.8mm SPC and 6.5mm Grendel.

And the rest of the comparisons were just as ridiculous. For "special weapons" they compared the Special Forces "sharpened entrenching tool" vs the Spetsnaz ballistic knife. Which is silly, because the sharpened entrenching tool is a Russian invention. If they were wanting to compare esoteric weapons, they would have been better off comparing the ballistic knife to the Special Forces tomahawk, because that's an actual American invention (and not just US American, given its an Injun weapon, its truly "American") But even more ridiculous, they compared the Mossberg 590 to the Saiga 12 and the m24 to the Dragunov! You don't even need to do a test to say which is better. Obviously, the Saiga 12 over the Mossberg and the m24 over the Dragunov. Its like common knowledge, only a moron would say otherwise!

For the first part, the Saiga 12 is semi-auto, so of course its going to outshoot a pump action mossberg. Plus its based on the AK, so its reliability is undeniable, so the issue of a pump action being more reliable than a semi auto is moot. And you'd have to be a retard to think that a Dragunov will outshoot an M24. Yeah, its semi-auto, but unlike Western semi-automatic sniper rifles like the PSG-1 or the SR-25 (whether in its MK11 Mod 0 incarnation for the SEALs or the M110 SASS for the army), its not a true precision weapon. As I've said countless times before, its a "sharpshooter's" rifle, meant to make up for the inherent inaccuracy of the AK compared to our M16s, used to deliver precision fire on the squad level to reach out beyond the range of the AKs. Its not an actual weapon a real sniper would use for actual sniping missions.

And all of this stuff is moot anyways! They're comparing the warriors on their equipment, but given the nature of their missions, they would use whatever they get their hands on. Sure, spearheading a Russian assault, Spetsnaz would use Russian weapons, but on deep raid missions, far away from their own lines, it makes more sense to use whatever weapons their enemy is using, where ammo and parts or more readily available. This is even more so for the Green Berets, who are either working with friendly militaries and thus from a logistical standpoint, it makes sense for them to use weapons in common with their allies. Or, when they're fostering insurrection, would use whatever the nascent rebels could get their hands on. Not only because of availability, but sometimes we don't want the enemy to know the Americans are helping the insurrectionists. And if the enemy finds bodies with bullet holes of Western and NATO calibers, they're gonna be pretty suspicious!

And I've babbled way to long on this, but all the holes in the show just annoyed me.

Finally, the GPS on my phone is working. Last week, it couldn't get my location any more accurate than within 4500 feet, which was ridiculous and kinda pointless. But now it can show me my location within 40-100 feet. Which is way more reasonable. Though trying to get my location inside the machine room here at work still screws up the gps and it can't get me within 4500 feet, but if I step outside it can get the proper location. I'm still waiting for the terminal app to come back out for this. Well, and tetris.

Anyways, during the weekdays, if Sci Fi will usually show blocks of cancelled sci fi TV shows. Obviously, I was quite familiar with Dark Angel, Tru Calling, and Jericho since I had watched those when they were originally on. I was aware of Seven Days, John Doe, Jeremiah, Wolf Lake (it has hotties like Mia Kirshner and MEW), and Kindred the Embraced (What Lily Van Der Woodsen was doing after Brisco County Jr, but before Gossip Girl! Yeah, I know she was also on Melrose, but I didn't watch that. Or E-Ring, Threat Matrix, or the District.). There's also Special Level 9 or whatever.

But there's this show they show starring Matthew Fox called Haunted which was apparently on UPN for a month back in 2002 which I have no recollection of. I mean, UPN would've had Buffy and Roswell at that point, so I would think I'd have at least seen commercials for it.

Oh, and it looks like they'll be showing the unaired eps of Pushing Daisies finally. The next few Saturdays at 10pm it'll be showing on ABC. I wonder if they managed to get a somewhat satisfying conclusion to this show, since they had to know they were on the bubble before they got cancelled.

Oops, overslept today because I apparently forgot to turn my alarm on. I was not amused when I woke up and saw my clock said "722". On the up side, since I woke up naturally, I assume my body has gotten all the sleep it needed for the night.

So, whoever came up with the idea to market the NES controller belt buckle, did they just think it was an interesting thing to make as a belt buckle, or were they paying homage to Captain N, the game-master?

And wait, they're doing a Cowboy Bebop live action movie, and Spike is going to be played by Keanu Reeves?! I can't fault Hollywood for wanting to make Cowboy Bebop though. Its a popular series, and there's no real weirdness going on, so it would be very easy for Western audiences to get into. I mean, its about bounty hunters in a futuristic/cyber-punkish world. And the protagonist (well, one of) is a bad-ass martial artist/gunfighter/ace pilot. So cool gunfights and martial arts sequences, as well as space dogfights? How would that not make for an awesome sci-fi action movie? I'm not sure about Keanu as Spike though. I wonder who they'll get for Faye though?

TV commentary:

Pushing Daisies- Besides Orlando Jones (what has he been up to lately?) as the head Norwegian, they had that one chick as the chick Norwegian. Surely she's a that girl, because she's like in everything. Or at least a lot of TV shows and movies I've seen. I continue to be sad that this series has been cancelled, because it seems like they have a lot of new plotlines they're going into, but will obviously not get resolved before the last ep. bbv('This is total BS!')

Owel, didn't get to play with my headphones (Motorola HT820s) before work since I had to give them time to fully charge. But I've gotten a chance to toy around with them after work. Now, the out of the box Sidekick LX doesn't have A2DP support, but luckily they added that in the latest OTA update. So the headphones do provide nice stereo sound. They seem loud enough, though I notice I have to kick the volume up a little higher on the LX to match the volume I'm used to with my full ear wired headphones, or the skullcandy earbuds I use when I'm out and about. I'll need to try them in the machine room at work tomorrow to see how well they sound with all that background noise.

One of the things I'm finding really useful is being able to pause and skip ahead using the headphone controls so I don't have to take my phone out of the pouch.

Oh, and I finally remembered a 5th pairing for the list in this post. Tim and Julie on FNL. Hey, I think there's potential there to be cute and interesting. Now, since I don't have Direct TV, I have no idea what's been going on this season. I'm sure there are ways to see it, but since I already watch a crapload of shows, I can wait to see it when it comes back to NBC (when is that?).

You know your car is old and cheap when you get your tag renewal in the mail and the fee is only $20.

On the way to work, picked up some candy from Publix. We never get trick or treaters at the house, but I'd rather have some on hand just in case. I'd feel bad if someone did show up and I had nothing to give them. Yeah, there's that weird rule about the porch light, but what if they (like I was, for the longest time) were totally unaware that no porch light on means no candy?

So I was on fan-fiction.net looking up to see if there were any new Dair fics, given this past ep of Gossip Girl totally lends itself to such fiction. And this whole time, I'd been looking up the Gossip Girl book section rather than the Gossip Girl TV section. But the majority of the stuff in the book section is based on the TV version of the characters! WTF?! More of me acting like a teenage girl )

Was it me, or was it friggin gloomy looking day today? I mean, it was so grey! Still feeling bleh, but what can you do?

Been reading entirely too much fic as of late. I find I prefer one shots to multi-chapters, in the range of 6000-10000 words. That seems ideal for a nice read- not too short, not too long. Not that multi-chapter fics are bad. 7 to 10 chapters, around 20,000-40,000 words is a good size. I have read some longer than that that are really good, but at that length, you feel so spent once you're done. It can be such a roller coaster. Of course, the other problem with multi-chapter ones are that if you come across one that's not yet complete, it can be so frustrating waiting for updates.

Ah, its a good thing I paid attention to recent commercials, I didn't realize there was a new South Park and Sarah Silverman Show Wednesday night. I found tonight's South Park kinda disturbing for a couple of reasons.

Is it really so gay to go out to a karaoke bar dressed in drag and sing something like "Its Raining Men", "Man, I Feel like a Woman", or "Dancing Queen" (or anything by Abba, actually?)?

When I first heard they were doing a Knight Rider remake movie, I thought it was something coming out in theaters. But its only a made for TV movie coming out this February. So the new KITT is one of those Ford Shelby Mustang GT500KRs? And KITT's new voice is GOB from Arrested Development? HA!

Tried to eat dinner at Frontera last night, and though it didn't say it on their sign, they had the frickin' mariachi band again. Who actually likes them coming around like that? Sure, you may think it amusing once, but it gets kinda annoying real quick if its a restaurant you got to regularly. I mean, its so frickin' loud so it makes it hard to talk with the people you're eating, even if they're across the room! The mariachis, not the people you're trying to talk to. I'm fine with them shooting up Latina American thugs and drug dealers by the hundreds, I just don't need to hear their actual music! Ended up going to Uncle Vito's instead. [livejournal.com profile] phatjoe mentioned that hot dog place in the same complex, which I was unaware of, but the roomie had mentioned to me like countless times apparently.

Wednesday night TV commentary:

Pushing Daisies )

Whoops, forgot to mention I started reading "Invincible", which [livejournal.com profile] clevemire lent to me. Heh, when I heard the name before, I was thinking of that movie. No, not the Mark Wahlberg becomes a Phillie Eagle one, the one about the jewish strongman in pre WWII Germany, neither movie I have seen. Anyways, Invincible is definitely a cool read. I do like the random, albiet weird pop culture references. I mean, the story arcs are named after sitcoms- "Head of the Class", "Family Matters", "Growing Pains". The first few ishes had strange Family Matters references- a dorky Urkel looking kid named "Steve White" (Urkel's first name and the last name of the actor who played him) and the high school is Reginald Vel Johnson high school (who of course played Carl Winslow, or John Mclane's cop helper in Die Hard), and I think the principal even looked like him and was named Mr. Winslow.

Anyways, its a funny, clever series. Its almost AD like where they'll start a joke in one issue, and you don't see the punchline until a few ishes later. But like many comics of late, they have a Justice League analogue. What's with all the Justice League analogues anyways? The Authority, there's a similar group in that one series that portrays superheroes as a-holes and bullies and the protagonists of the story are a morally ambiguous bunch who go after them to put them in their place (the name of the series escapes me). Even the Wanted comic series has characters who are obvious references to the Justice League. BTW, the concept of the Wanted comic actually sounds cool (wiki it some time), but the new movie with Angelina Jolie and who the devil is that the kids like nowadays, oh yeah, Morgan Freeman, is almost nothing like it. They turn it into some weird gun fu movie and it looks like they drop out the main concept of the book!!

But I digress, back to Justice League analogues. I always thought Marvel was more popular than DC, but it seems the Justice League is more iconic that the Marvel superheroes. I mean, everyone knows Spiderman and the Hulk, and many prolly heard of Daredevil, the Fantastic Four, the X-men, and Iron Man. But do most people know the roster of the Avengers (or realize its not about British spies in bowler hats and cat suits)? Hell, even before the movies could non comic book geeks even name the members of the Fantastic Four or the X-Men (other than Wolverine)? But I bet a lot of people could name the Justice League.

So last night I was at the Hannah Montana concert trolling for chyx. Okay, not really, what do you think I am, some sick perv? But on the ride in to work, I'm hearing one of the stations recounting the event from last night, and the venue was supposedly jam packed, even more so than when they have more established artists, like the Eagles. And I heard some tickets were going for like $2500! Do kids have that much buying power? Well, their parents? Is it because if parents are buying it for their brats, money is no object, as opposed to even the most crazed obsessed fan of a normal musical artist/group? And on the radio they were saying parents had rented limos for their kids to ride in? It just sounds very weird, because I had no idea she was that popular.

What was up with that Shrek the Halls Christmas special last night? Why did they have that and the Grinch and push Pushing Daisies to 9pm? So it, Gossip Girl, and Bionic Woman were all on at the same time. Thank goodness for dual recorder DVRs. Though if it came to it, I'd have dropped Bionic Woman, which I don't know why I still watch. Well, she is kinda hot, especially when she uses her native English accent. And her younger sister (i.e., Robin Scherbatsky's little sis, or Mini-Coop's friend from boarding school) is hot (and legal!) as well.

More on my weird idiosyncracies. I've mentioned before that I'll try my damnedest not to handle a public bathroom door (usually getting an extra piece of towel to touch the handle and toss it in the trash after I get the door opened), but another weird bathroom thing of mind is being grossed out when people fill/clean out coffee pots and what have you in the bathroom sink. Its like, why can't you use the breakroom/kitchen sink? I guess water from the bathroom sink isn't less clean than that from other sinks, but it still makes me feel ill for some reason.

And its ridiculous, because when brushing my teeth, after spitting out the toothpaste, I'll drink some water from the bathroom sink. Though if I get thirsty in the middle of the night, I usually walk all the way to the kitchen to get a drink of water, even though the bathroom's closer. Why is it okay to drink from there only after brushing my teeth?

Another thing that weirds me out- dead pr0n chicks. No, I'm not talking about some sort of weird necrophilia thing. The other day, I forgot what I was reading, but the article off handedly mentioned pr0n star Haley Paige had died this past August. And I've come to realize, now it kinda weirds me out too watch any of her work. Same goes for a few other chicks in that business who have died. I mean, why should it matter if they're dead now? I'm not weirded out by re-watching movies done by actors/actresses that are now dead. Then again, I guess it is in the back of my mind sometimes when I watch a movie with a dead actor/actress, like I'll be thinking, "Oh, how sad, he/she is dead."

Wednesday night TV commentary:

South Park: This whole imagination storyline has me curious if its a dig at shows like Family Guy and Robot Chicken with the random and obscure character references. Like, they're thinking, let's have an ep where we just have tons of random TV and movie references.

The Sarah Silverman show: Not a comment on the ep per se, but I know [livejournal.com profile] clevemire and someone else have expressed disappointment that Laura Silverman isn't as hot as she sounded like she supposed to be doing voice work on Dr. Katz, but I still find her kinda attractive. (was young Laura being played by Molly from Heroes?)

Bionic Woman: Yeah, I know Michelle Ryan is really British, so I find it hysterical that this whole ep was just one big excuse to drop her American accent and talk in her native accent under the guise of pretending to be a Brit. I was particularly amused when she would keep using the accent when no one was around, and Herc's all, "Why are you still using the British accent?" But he is correct in saying that its the hottest thing evar! Okay, its prolly not the hottest thing ever, but British (and Aussie) accents on chyx is up there in terms of hot things.

Pushing Daisies: Last night's Pushing Daisies had more singing! (This time, They Might Be Giants' "Birdhouse in Your Soul") Not as long as Kristen Chenowth's rendition of "Hopelessly Devoted to You" from a couple of eps ago though, so I guess that some consolation for those who don't like that sort of thing. (why not?!) I forgot Sylar's mom is another musical person, having played Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors. So I guess if Kristen gets to sing, Ellen Greene does as well.
