Haven't written here in a while since most of my non-work time has been spent watching my shows, slogging through the towers in MK11 and photographing Transformers and playing Gloomhaven and T.I.M.E stories. But I have some time now.

Rise- So I had only been vaguely aware of Rise until the Superbowl, when they had the commercial with the kids singing "Glorious", and my interest was piqued. As I've said in other places, it seemed to have a FNL meets Glee sorta vibe. Which, I was sold already, but then when I discovered the plot was them trying to do "Spring Awakening", I started getting really excited.

Heh, from the very moment it starts, you know its by the FNL guy, because it starts with someone driving by picturesque scenes of the town. But instead of it being Texas, its a steel town in Pennsylvania, and there's no voiceover by Slamming Sammy Meade talking football.

Also, they refer to Robbie as "QB1" in the first minute, which do people really do that? While [personal profile] clevemire thinks since I went to Catholic school, we couldn't have a "real" football program compared to like the South and Midwest (and as [personal profile] isabel79 and [profile] 7500centfish our high schools were considered pretty good in the NYC/Long Island high school football leagues), football was still relatively big in my school, and no one was referring to the quarterback as QB1.

Anyways, I enjoyed it, it was sorta a more serious version of Glee- I mean, Lou practically Finn-ed him by blackmailing him into auditioning, just like Mr Schue did to Finn. But really, it felt more like FNL, except in a different, albeit still blue collar town, and there was a plot where like Riggins decided he wanted to be in a musical.

Apparently, the critics have seen the entire season already, and I've heard them say the music is more theater fair than the poppy choice Glee had. But that's not a bad thing! I would love if we got more Spring Awakening tracks. Or even some Hamilton! But yeah, we got a glimpse of them doing some of the songs during a montage, but I would really love to hear some full length versions of "Mama Who Bore Me" or "Totally Fucked" or "Don't Do Sadness/Blue Wind".

I'm also guessing this will satisfy the theater nerds who wanted to like Glee but felt it didn't do enough Broadway.

Speaking of musicals on NBC, so the upcoming Jesus Christ Superstar, John Legend is Jesus, Sara Bareilles is Mary Magdalene, and presumably Alice Cooper is Judas? As long as he does a good job on "Heaven on Their Minds"!

Legends of Tomorrow- Interesting way to get the Death totem. spoiler cut )

Flash- I thought it was fun to see the switchup. spoiler cut )

Izombie- Interesting, they just glossed over that in the beginning. spoiler cut )

So TV guide did a ranking of all the CW tv shows. Their top 10:

10) Everybody Hates Chris
9) The 100
8) Gilmore Girls
7) The LA Complex
6) Supernatural
5) Veronica Mars
4) Vampire Diaries
3) iZombie
2) Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
1) Jane the Virgin

I've watched (or at least seen a few eps of) every one on this list except for LA Complex. Which I find baffling. I mean, of all the one season show the channel ended up having, this was the one TV Guide ranked the highest?

And really, Frequency last? And Carrie Diaries ranking higher than Gossip Girl? I guess its not fair of me to judge the former since I never watched it, but they seemed like similar shows, and if one got only two seasons to the other's six or seven, wouldn't that mean the latter is better?

Like I'm not sure I'd rank iZombie over Veronica Mars, but at the very least you could say it got more seasons, so it must have done something better.

iZombie- Heh, I'm always wary when a show does D&D, but hey they were pretty accurate with the mechanics. spoiler cut )

Prison Break- Hey, we get a new end to the series, yet the groundwork is laid for a continuation if they wanted. spoiler cut )

TV commentary:

Great News- I had initially passed on this because my Tuesday schedule is currently full. But clevemire mentioned it had a 30 Rock feel, so I decided to catch up on Hulu. And the comparisons are apt. I mean, I dunno anything about filming and lighting and all that jazz, but the look even matches 30 Rock. And the comedy is similar as well. So honestly, this just feels like 30 Rock, but with different people. Glad I checked it out, I've been enjoying it.

iZombie- Heh, seriously, show? Like since they put it out there, I assume he's actually gonna end up being fine. spoiler cut )

The Americans- Whoops! spoiler cut )

TV commentary:

iZombie- Woah, crazy season finale. Also, did they not know if they were gonna be renewed or not when they filmed this? Because I think that would've been a passable series finale if had to be- I mean, there definitely would be loose ends, but nothing big-big.

Also, I think I've said this before, but its kinda uncanny how Bozzio totally seems like what Veronica Mars would be like if they had gone with her becoming an FBI agent.

TV commentary:

iZombie- You know, sometimes I forget this is a Rob Thomas show (even though it has all his hallmarks and a shared cast), which in turn makes me forget my favorite part of his shows, the consistent recurring cast. Like I said with Veronica Mars, it makes the universe seem real when they run into the same people again, instead of having totally different people whom we never see again.

Of course, it was easier to remember in VM, particularly the first two seasons, since it was HS, so its easy to see the recurring characters because many of them are classmates of Veronica. But here, like these past few eps, I'm totally missing people have been on this show before until they point it out. Like this ep, I didn't realize frat boy was from a previous ep until he recognized Liv. spoiler cut )

Faking It- You know, since I first saw Mckaley Miller on Hart of Dixie where she was just a kid, it totally weirds me out that she's apparently a love interest for Liam. I mean, that show started five years ago, so I guess age wise, it actually matches, but it still seems like he's too old for her. spoiler cut )

TV commentary:

iZombie- Hmm, some pretty good developments here. spoiler cut )

Faking It- Oh, that wasn't too bad! spoiler cut )
