TV commentary:
Voltron- Ugh, I forget that tumblr is the worst sometimes. Like I like the art and fic and gifsets people make, but actual discussion about stuff is usually just dumb. Just full of people who want to feel holier than thou by constantly complaining how this thing or that isn't 100% woke or unproblematic.
Seriously, some people being all, "I like how we collectively agree that s7 of Voltron was horrible!" 1) no, not everyone on tumblr thinks that, maybe in your small part of tumblr, where you only interact and agree with you. But plenty of other tumblr users have voiced their opinion about how that's false. But they conveniently ignore that. And 2) tumblr fandoms seem to think they're representative of everyone who watches things. You're not! There are plenty of shows where a huge part of the audience doesn't even know what tumblr is.
I mean, you don't like a show, definitely don't watch it anymore, show your displeasure with your wallet and viewership. If you're truly representative of the majority of the fans, that should have an impact. Not cool? Attacking other fans, sending hate to the voice actors, etc.
Like whatever, this season was epic. Lots of cool new characters introduced, all sorts of interesting plot points and awesome stuff. But oh no, people were "baited" and their ships didn't happen, so now they're angry. People forget that the world isn't as progressive as it should be yet. Sure, there's more LGBTQA representation, but just because you want something to happen, doesn't mean it will. I mean, we were lucky to get Korrasami in LoK! There are definitely other cartoons with such relationships, but they're few and far between. I think tumblr sometimes thinks just because there's a lot of content on the site in support of it, its canon.
I mean, I ship some non-canon things, but I don't go overboard like some of these people do. The only ship that almost made me stop watching a show was Dair. But at least it wasn't a case of being upset about a ship not ever being canon. I was upset because they did make it canon, and it was great, and it worked, but then they just broke them up for no reason because the show wanted to go back to the boring, abusive prosaic relationship of Chair.
So these people were kidding themselves if they thought Klance was actually going to happen. And then they bring up Axca/Keith and Allurance are coming out of nowhere. Well, for one, we don't know what's going on with Axca and Keith. I mean, Ezor and Zethrid taunted her about having a crush on him, but the fact of the matter is we don't know that she does. She obviously feels something for him, but she could totally be his sister. Sure, you'd think Krolia would say something if Axca was her daughter, but that's kinda par for the course not only for this shows, but shows like it. Missing plot points or not doing them well.
Same with Allura and Lance. He's always had a crush on her, and yeah her liking him back is a little out of nowhere. But barely anything happened. All she did was say "be safe!" and blush a little. So they're hardly a couple being thrown in the face of Klance shippers. These people forget that shows like this are half hour shows aimed at kids. They're not going to have a lot of relationship stuff, straight or otherwise.
Now the Shiro/Adam thing, I can see people being upset about that, and they can try to claim they didn't overhype it for themselves, but they kinda did. And to be fair, I didn't even hear anything about it beforehand, and I'm sure other viewers who weren't as obsessive didn't either. The complaint is a little understandable- the writers were all excited to bring up Shiro having a former boyfriend back on Earth, but like I said, since this is a cartoon, if people thought they were going to get a lot of content, they were mistaken. The people who ship things are a small part of the audience, the show is still about a bunch of young pilots getting into adventures in giant robot lions that form a big robot, so if it forgoes that for shippy stuff straight or gay, other viewers will get bored/angry.
And to reiterate again, the world isn't as progressive as we hope yet, so yeah, on the actual show it was pretty low key, like you might not even know they were a couple. But what do they want, for them to be all, "Oh hello, my gay lover!" Yes, it was vague, but Adam being upset in the flashback about Shiro wanting to go into deep space definitely read as boyfriend, not friend.
Also, given the backlash the past few years against the bury your gays trope, I will say maybe it wasn't wise for the writers to announce Shiro has a boyfriend, but then to have said boyfriend randomly die before Shiro got back in order to show "the stakes are high!" Seriously, every other person's loved ones survive, and the one person you kill is the gay guy?
Its upsetting, but again, that's not the focus of the show. Show should do better than that, sure, but I'm not going to rake everyone involved or anyone who isn't rending their garments over this over the coals. But the show is relatively progressive, and these freaking tumblr-ites always calling to cancel shows that make one little mistake. They want a perfect, woke, unproblematic show, but what they're doing is actually detrimental.
Like being upset about Dolls' death on Wynonna Earp and are all, "Oh, you're here for lesbian representation, but don't care the black guy died!" Or upset things aren't gay enough on Supergirl? Boycotting a show that even has the tiniest bit of representation doesn't get shows with more representation get made, it just makes Hollywood think, "I guess people don't like watching shows with representation."
But yeah, this season was great, I don't know what people were smoking. Romelle, the MSE pilots, all the Atlas stuff was cool. Actually, I guess that's something to complain about, did they just quickly kill of Ezor and Zethrid at the beginning of the season? Now that's kinda lame.
I'm definitely looking forward to next season. Between the MSE pilots and actually referencing past alien characters and them all coming to Earth, maybe they'll have vehicle voltron? That might be too many robots, given Atlas transforms into a big robot. Heh, between that and the MSEs, that definitely gave off a Robotech vibe.
Also, I was confused why they built such a big ship, talking about how it could fit the lions. My mind was os focused on the possibility of vehicle Voltron that I forgot they needed a replacement for the Castle of Lions. Which is exactly what Atlas is.
And the big reveal at the end with the mysterious robot having an Altean pilot, I don't think it has anything to do with Lotor or Haggar, even though Romelle's colony disappeared. They already set it up previously with the alternate universe. Its possible those Alteans managed to finally cross over and are planning to invade. I mean, with the Galra defeated, that would make sense for a new enemy.
