Voltron- S4 came out on Netflix today. Though its a little ridiculous calling it season four since its obvious its just the back half of the previous season. So, its disappointingly short. But still pretty good. Though the way you hear some people on tumblr talk about it, its the worst thing ever.
Mostly because I think those people had expectations for their ships and characters that didn't pan out. Which character development is good, and I definitely want to explore the characters, but at the same time, its about a bunch of people trying to overthrow an evil empire. And its like "Oh no, how dare this show make progress on that front rather than deal with shippy stuff!"
I mean, part of the problem is that they decided to split the season into two, so as I said, this "season" is woefully short. And given one ep was a character driven side quest (which really paid off!), and the other was a comical ep, that's like a third of the season right there, not leaving room for much else.
I think a lot of the negative nancies are just pissed Keith was gone for most of the season. I mean, the first ep in, he was being a dick in my opinion, kinda shitting on the legacy he was given. I get he felt Shiro should still be leader, and that he was the odd man out now that Lance had transferred to Red (and Allura to Blue), so staying a pilot would mean someone would be left out in the cold.
So he was trying to be all "noble" by joining the Blades of Malmora and being unavailable for Voltron when they needed him. It was kinda annoying that things worked out to "reward" his dickishness with the Black Lion taking back Shiro. I would've like to see some consequence for his behavior.
But, on a good note, Pidge is reunited with her brother. At first, she thinks he died, but that was a fake-out, and they finally find each other. They do make a cool pair though, it was nice to see him help out the team, hopefully there'll be more of that in the future.
Though again, with the season being so short, they didn't get to touch on a bunch of stuff. Like they gave some screen time to Pidge and Matt catching up, and it was great, but they didn't really delve into his reunion with Shiro, as don't forget, they were teammates in that mission with his and Pidge's father. And they don't do more with his crush on Allura and Lance getting incredibly jealous.
Also, I wish there was more time so they could've delved into Lotor and his general's more. The show is called Voltron, so it would be more about the Paladins, but Lotor's team could have gotten a little more time. Like Lotor just cutting Narti down. They didn't even spend any time explaining exactly what went down with her. Was she a spy for Haggar? Did Haggar mind-control her? They just knew they were being spied on, and Lotor cut Narti down once he figured it out. Like he didn't even explain it to the others! They should've reacted all, "Holy crap, WTF?!" and gotten defensive and asked Lotor to explain himself!
Which makes it even klunkier a few eps later, when the others decide to betray him, all, "He turned on Narti, who knows if he'll turn on us!" And that whole storyline could've benefited from more backstory. I mean, I think while his generals were loyal to him, especially since they were all half-breeds or non-Galra, they believed in the Galra empire.
Like, I think they followed him because they believed in his vision for a new Empire that accepts their kind as more than just slaves. But we don't know that. I think that's the case for things to make sense the way they played out. In just immediately cutting down Narti, the rest of them felt betrayed. They backed the wrong horse, so of course they were going to betray him right back to save their own skins.
I mean, there's nothing wrong with wanting to save yourself! And again, I do think this only makes sense if they still believed in the Empire- they'd prefer the Empire they thought Lotor would build, but if he failed (like you could see how crushed Axca was when Lotor's gate plan failed, she was incredibly disillusioned), they're still loyal to the Empire and would want to rejoin it any way they know how.
So Axca decided to shoot Lotor in the back and turn him in and hope the Empire showed them mercy. Again, I wish we got better backstory, because Lotor was downright SHOCKED when he saw Axca about to shoot him in the back. Like despite cutting down Narti, this was like totally unexpected. And the thing is, I don't think it was arrogance, that he thought nothing of his generals that he could just kill one of them and that they should be glad to be following him.
I think he legitimately thought they would be fine with what he did. He made a command decision to quickly dispatch a threat, he was protecting all of them. But for some reason, he didn't explain that to them, hence their wavering loyalty.
That is interesting though, once Lotor escaped, Acxa felt they only had one other option. Was it to swallow their pride, abandon an Empire that deemed them traitors, and join the rebels? Which if so, that would be funny since it seems Lotor is doing the exact same thing, having saved the rebellion by blasting the transmitter Haggar was using to try and blow up that one planet.
Speaking of, I can't remember if it was confirmed last season, but they definitely say Honerva/Haggar is Lotor's mom. Also, the ships Lotor and his generals are so weird looking, there's go to be more to them! Like, hopefully it'll be addressed later, but they really seem like they could transform or combine into something.
