One Day at a Time- Now that I've seen a few more eps, I agree with critics, this is a pretty good show. It manages to suffuse the prosaic family sitcom style with modern sensibility. Heh, I will say, while it does seem to tend more towards a latin family experience, since I'm Filipino, there are some aspects I can empathize with. Like the third episode covered religion. Like when Penelope told her mom she wanted the family to quit going to church and it was her decision since she's head of the family, I was totally shocked. All, "Are you crazy! Your mother is gonna flip out!"
But as I said, I liked how they handled it, as they did a good job of portraying both sides. On the one hand, Penelope should have the final say on how the family is raised, but she was a little dismissive of her mother's religious convictions, labeling it as habit and "its just a social club for her". So Lydia told her not to belittle her faith, and how church was a huge solace for her when Penelope was over in Afghanistan.
Heh, I'm a little skeptical that in the end Lydia compromised to going on Easter and Christmas, and "one other time so they're not like those people!" HA! I was thinking the compromise they would go for would be Lydia not spend so much time socializing post Church so Penelope would still have the rest of the day to do stuff with the family. I guess that was something I didn't get, what Catholics spend "until 430" at Church? Like they're not baptists!
Bunheads- So six episodes in, I will say Sasha has similar physical attributes to Rory, but her personality seems closer to Paris. I guess I haven't seen enough interaction between Sasha and Michelle yet to see any commonality with Lorelai/Rory (I hear it does though), but Michelle/Fanny is very Lorelai/Emily. Seriously, if I close my eyes I can hardly tell the difference.
The over-arching plots are moving slower than I expected (like I'm totally surprised its taken this long for Michelle to start teaching), which is sad since the show was canceled after the first season so there's only the 18 eps.
It is kinda sad/surprising it didn't get renewed, because it was a quality show. Of course, I'm kinda split on its fate- I think it deserved more seasons, but if it didn't get canceled, Ginny wouldn't have been free to be Lauren on Faking It, and she was one of the best parts of that show. (Speaking of Faking It, is it me, or does Sasha look a lot like a raven haired Amy Raudenfeld?)
