Just another Saturday at work. Wow, for the first time in weeks I don't have like a dozen machines to hook up or wiring or building to do, so unless something breaks things should be breezy.
Going up to
zarathrustra94 and
turdburgler for geek fun, finished up the last volume of Kare Kano and the latest Basara and went home with a bunch of shoujo. Random musings on Kare Kano, Basara, and D:TNG: (shoujo and teen dramas,
geebs, are you really a teeny bopper girl?)
An interesting end to the series for Kare Kano. They seemed to continue with the whole Yukino and Soichiro's daughter being Asapin's soul mate. What the?! With the jump ahead several years, their daughter, Sakura is a young woman now, and while Asapin has been the "cool" uncle to her, its clear she has feelings for him! What the?! He's old enough to be her dad! Seriously, that's just weird and kinda inappropriate!!
Also inappropriate, the tiny quick fake out that Soichiro was killed by an assassin's bullet while working on a case and Yukino marrying Asapin after coming closer after sucha tragedy! Yeah, you quickly find out they were just playing around, but if I were Soichiro, I'd be totally suspicious. Because that's normal, your wife and your best friend playing married and pretending you have been killed in the line of duty! Particularly a flirt like Hideaki! Definitely a weird dynamic the three of them have going on.
But they seem to cover what everyone's been doing in those 16 years: Yukino's a plastic surgeon at Soichiro's dad's hospital, along with Maho, who's a neurologist. Soichiro's a decorated police detective. Besides Sakura, Yukino and Soichiro have fraternal twin sons, Hideaki's an artist, Yukino's sis Tsukino becomes a tennis star but retires due to injury, and her other sis Kano becomes editor to Aya, who's become a famous author. Rika is still Aya's whatever the hell they are, but she's also a seamstress working for Tsubasa's dad. Tsubasa is a housewife, married to her stepbrother, Kazama (between this and the whole Hideaki/Sakura thing, things sure are different in Japan!), and his band Yin and Yang are world famous and often collaborate with Soichiro's pop Reiji. And apparently Tsubaki and Tonomi have become like travelling professors who've been travelling the world this whole time? Looks like it ends with everyone happy.
Argh, I hate when they end ishes of Basara in the middle of a battle! Still, what I like about the series is the blend of action and romance, plus lots of stragetic stuff and political intrigue. So, looks like everyone's vying for the throne. King Ukon might not be the biggest threat to Sarasa and Shuri. Turns out project pomegranite is the brainchild of one of Ukon's advisors- he's having people build a new castle. Why? Its all part of his plan to usurp the throne and eliminate Sarasa and Shuri!
How? He sends the White Lady to lure Tatara into a trap to fight Shuri. In the ensuing battle, Hiragi assassinates Shuri while culling many of Tartara's men. Then the White Lady will ask Tatara for truce, and when they go to Kyoto, it gets blown up, killing Sarasa and King Ukon. With the big players all gone, the councilor effectively becomes head of Japan, moving the base of power to the new castle he's built! Of course, I'm thinking Shuri's too smart for that, and while Sarasa's not that astute, she's extremely good to quickly adapting and surviving any trap sprung on her.
Reporter dude has discovered the plot, and is desperately trying to warn the two young generals. Too bad he didn't tell his mistress he loves her, so she's all indignant and thinking she was just a tool for him to spy on the Royal House and is about to turn him in. Also throwing another monkey wrench into the plan? The White Lady. She's not the naive pawn the Councilor assumes she is. She knows what's going on, but she's trying to manipulate things so Asagi comes to power rather than any of the aforementioned! Awesome.
Anyways, the volume ends with Shuri and Sarasa fighting it out in a night battle, Shuri getting Sarasa with some dirty tricks, but Sarasa quickly figuring a way out. Come daybreak though, she now has to deal with Shuri's gold plated elephant cavalry! And we still haven't seen Hiragi and if he's gonna take out Shuri! The next volume comes out soon, ah can't wait!
So on Degrassi, they jump ahead to after JT's funeral, with the murderer in jail. Sean still wants to kick the guy's ass though, and if the previews are any indication, it looks like things are still really bad between Lakehurst and Degrassi, with Manny and Lakehurst's student body prez being like Romeo and Juliet or something. I wonder if there'll actually be more violence?
Anyhoo, Toby macks on Liberty, and Mia and Liberty aren't getting along at all. Manny had told Toby not to mention the whole, "JT left the party to tell Liberty how he felt about her" but upon hearing of the Toby/Liberty kissage tells him he's making an even bigger mistake. Finally, after getting tired of Mia bitch about Liberty, he reveals the whole JT still in love with Liberty thing. He does neglect to mention the whole "and that's why he left the party and ended up getting murdered thing", because that prolly would've really pushed Liberty over the edge.
And now for something less girly. Gears of War has the assault rifles with the underbarrel chainsaws. Halo has the Brute Shot- the wicked looking bayoneted grenade launcher. Why not have a game that combines the two? Semi-auto grenade launcher with a bayonetted chain-saw? Not very practical, but its got a coolness factor about it! Particularly if the grenade launcher has a hold open device so you could load single grenades directly into the chamber instead of from a magazine. And it would be intimidating! Who's not afraid of chainsaws? So you got that for "up close" work, but for firefights you could load in buckshot or flechette rounds, and for big bada-booms, various grenade types- normal HEDP, Flashbangs, White Phosphorous, Thermobaric. Its perfect for the wild and crazy frontal assault!
I remember seeing a few months ago the South African PAW-20 20mm semi-auto grenade launcher. Unlike the recently Marine adopted M-32 (which is of course the South African Milkor MGL-140), the MM1, and the Russian RG-6, its magazine fed, rather than using a revolver-type cylinder. So its quicker to reload, but it also use proprietary 20mm ammunition. So I'm not sure it would actually get any widespread use. At least the new M-32 uses the 40x46mm low velocity rounds used by the M-79, the underbarrel M-203, and its possible replacement, the much superior XM-320, itself a product improved version of H-Ks AG-36 originally made for the G36 assault rifle. Anyways, looks like the Marines love the new M-32, as that's a lot of firepower in such a handy package. You can send 6 40mm rounds downrange quick in a matter of seconds, that'll really put a hurting on an enemy!
Alas, I couldn't find any videos on youtube for the M-32, so here's a vid of the AA-12 automatic shotgun firing the snazzy new frag-12 shells. Unlike the USAS-12, the updated AA-12 can chamber the 3 inch magnum 12 gauge shells. Things to note, the controlability and minimal muzzle rise, despite the fact the dude is firing a fully automatic 12 gauge shotgun! And the other is the fact that he's firing those explosive rounds at 1 inch thick steel plate and manages to tear through it like paper!
