Dec. 28th, 2004 10:43 pmBy hook and by crook, I managed to watch The House of Flying Daggers today. Pretty cool flick. Had some cool fight choreography in it. Its also bloodier than CTHD or Hero, especially at the end with all the blood splashing around. But the story is interesting. Who knew you could do an undercover police story in Ancient China? I did see one of the big surprises coming, but the other I didn't. Had a sad ending, which seems to be par for the course for these Chinese films. Can't they have an ending a little more upbeat? Anyways, the ending for this was particularly disappointing. When it happened I was all, wtf?! This is the end?!
So I had a feeling Leo was actually working for the Flying Daggers, but I didn't expect him and Mei to be lovers. Or rather, that he was in love with her. Though like he said, her falling for Jin was a little out of the blue and a little too quick. I guess he's free spirited, and that something to admire in their world, where they're mere pawns in a war. But that Leo, first putting the dagger through her heart, and then pretending to toss a dagger at Leo so she'd pull that dagger out to deflect his and bleed out even though it wasn't neccesary? What a jerk! So the whole end where she dies and Jin cries over her body while Leo walks away to die after what he had done, what's up with that?! Its all very tragic.
Dang, is it gonna snow again?

Abrupt! That it was! I mean, the actual story elements I think took less then five minutes! I mean, after the Leo guy leaves to go back undercover after Nia knifes him in the back for trying to have his way with Mei, I expected like some other developments! But there wasn't! All the movie was was Jin going undercover, Leo arresting Mei so Jin could rescue her and take him to the Flying Daggers, but then you find out she's not really blind and Leo is also a mole. And that he loves Mei but she has fallen for Jin. That sounds just like the preliminary set up for the main plot! But it isn't! Jin and Mei do it, then she tells him to run away and he asks her to go with him, but she refuses at first, but when she finally does, Leo gravely wounds her and he and Jin fight it out and mortally wound each other, then Mei dies thinking she was saving Jin's life! Nothing about this mysterious General, or what happens when the soldiers surround the place the Flying Daggers are. Are they cornered? is it a trap for the soldiers? I understand that the love story is the main plot, but they did have the whole war between the government and the flying daggers as the back drop, but they just leave it hanging!
