TV commentary:
Glee- So as depressing as it is that I'm closer to the age of the parents and teachers on shows, I think the writers also often don't realize the age of their adult characters either. Hey, I like the songs off the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, but disco was way before my time. And Will would've been in HS the same time I was, so its not like it would be considered hip and relevant then, enough for him to win Nationals back when he was in Glee club. Still, looking at tumblr during this ep, I didn't realize people really hate-hate disco. Do falsettos really drive people crazy?!
I'm kinda amused they used footage from the teen version of him's National's performance from the original pilot. Which, since the disco stuff was cut from that, them pretty much re-using that storyline doesn't count as a re-hash.
So the plot of this ep involves Will trying to reach the three students he think are the most lost and have no idea what to do after graduation- Mercedes, Santana, and Finn. Mercedes wants to be the next Mariah or Whitney, but doesn't have an inkling of even how to achieve that. Santana claims she just wants to be famous, so she doesn't need college. And Finn is just aimless.
Of course, those who actually like Rachel were rioting over this episode, because the writers have the gall to think her considering forgoing her Broadway dreams, because who knows, Finn might have even bigger dreams than her is totally acceptable! What the shit, Glee? That's a great message for young girls, if you have a legitimate dream that you are well on your way to achieving, like say, being an incredible vocal talent and performer, who has dreams of going to Broadway, its perfectly reasonable to forgo that for the sake of your idiot boyfriend who doesn't don't know what to do with his life! And the depressing thing is I'm sure there was a sizable portion of the audience who was thinking Rachel was being a selfish bitch for not giving up on her childhood dreams for her boyfriend.
Look, I feel for Finn, he feels like a loser. But are the writers incapable of lifting him up without screwing over Rachel?! And apparently his dream is to be an actor now? Whatever, at least he has an excuse to want to go to NY. And now that he can go to NY, Rachel is allowed to. I cut this show a lot of slack, but that storyline was a whole lot of BS. Heh, Quinn only showed up briefly in the background this ep, I guess because she would've run Finn down with her wheelchair if her character was aware of this storyline.
As for the other two "troubled teens", Sam puts a vid of Mercedes performance on youtube to get her face out there (because one youtube vid will certainly make her the next Mariah!). And heh, I guess since Mercedes dumped Shane in the V-day ep, he's free to be back on Cougar Town? Britt meanwhile leaks a sex tape of her and Santana. Heh, I actually want to give Britt the benefit of the doubt, and she wasn't being stupid, and was showing her gf the pitfalls of trying to get famous by any means necessary. Santana has a change of heart and realizes she does want go to college, and lucky for her, Sue got her a full ride to some college in Kentucky that has the best cheerleading program in the nation.
This is also the debut of the last Glee Project winner, Alex, who's playing a Vocal Adrenaline (now coached by Jesse St James) transgender named Wade, who's apparently a big fan of Mercedes and Kurt (hey, I did think he looked like their love child). He asks them for advice, because he wants to perform on stage as the real him, "Unique". They want to encourage him, but they feel Ohio is not ready for a transgender to perform in stage in a dress and heels. But, since Sue wants ND to win, that's exactly what Sue wants, believing the performance will hurt VA's rep. So, Mercedes and Kurt pass some big-ass heels from her to Wade/Unique.
Kurt and Mercedes have a change of heart, not wanting Wade to embarrass himself. But Wade won't be deterred. He performs on stage as Unique, despite Jesse freaking the geek out and trying to stop her. But, the crowd actually goes wild over it.
Ah, looks like next week's ep is a Whitney tribute ep?
