TV commentary:

Bunheads- So, now that I've seen the pilot all the way through, I can make some more in-depth commentary. So the conceit of the show is that Michelle, who is really just Lorelai 2.0, is a down on her luck ballerina turned Vegas showgirl. She was a gifted dancer, her problem was she had no focus, hence following her friend to Vegas on a whim and then getting stuck there ever since.

She has an admirer, Hubbell, who is a little stalkerish. I mean, its kinda weird that he's just this random guy who hardly knows her but showers her with gifts and wants to take care of her. So she normally blows him off, but after an audition falls through and she's feeling shitty, she decides to finally go on a date with him. He wows her with stories of his home town, a small little town by the ocean, and still smarting from the audition and lamenting what her life has begun, goes eff it, and decides to marry him on the spot.

He takes her home, where she learns he lives with his mom, Fanny, who runs a dance studio. Again, Fanny is mostly Emily, but less of a wet blanket. She sometimes likes to let loose in bars! Interestingly enough, her story is like Lorelai, in that she also got knocked up. (What is it with ASP and ladies getting knocked up and it messing up their life plans?) Not when she was 16, but in the middle of her burgeoning ballet career. The father left her, so she decided to take time off to raise Hubbell, making ends meet by teaching dance. It was only supposed to be for a little bit, but then next thing she knows, her life has passed her by.

Needless to say, she's not too pleased when her son shows up married to a Las Vegas showgirl. Heh, her initial meeting with Michelle is incredibly Emily Gilmore-ish, insisting to throw a welcome party for her, since she couldn't be invited to the wedding. She's not too mean though, because one of her students, Boo, who is large for a ballerina wants to try out for some prestigious dance school, but is worried its a fool's errand since she's not a typical ballet girl. Fanny does tell her, yes, she isn't what they normally look for, but that shouldn't stop her from tryng.

Anyways, Michelle starts to have second thoughts, because the whole town seems to be scandalized by her appearance and don't react well to change. Heh, like one of the wacky residents is Hubbell's ex, Truly, who is played by Mindy from FNL. Which is kinda hilarious because she's weird and mousy and the total opposite of Mindy Collette-Riggins. Needless to say, the party is awkward. So they talk alone, and Michelle admits she doesn't love him, but he knows, he's not that dense. But he cares for her and she thinks maybe she can grow to love him that way. She and Hubbell totally end up doing it while the party is going on, which of course totally offends Fanny when she figures out what they did. And again, seriously, the way the whole scene plays out, you could totally imagine the same scene with Lorelai and Emily.

But Hubbell defends her to the whole town, telling everyone he loves Michelle and won't let anyone shit-talk her. Michelle eventually hides from all the awkwardness in the dance studio, where the main cast students are hiding and drinking- the aforementioned Boo, Ginny (played by Lauren from Faking It), the tall and lanky Melanie, and top star Sasha, whom Fanny later tells Michelle seems just like her. (So I've seen people label Sasha as Rory 2.0 because of that, but unlike Fanny/Emily and Michelle/Lorelai, so far Sasha isn't too Rory-like)

She ends up bonding with them since they're all dancers, and gives Boo the confidence she needs to audition. Sasha is the only one not sold on her. But Fanny witnesses the scene and gains a newfound respect for Michelle. They end up bonding in a bar, lamenting their failed careers, but then having some fun. Only for Truly to show up to inform them that Hubbell was killed in a car accident looking for them. And that's where the pilot ends.

Which, I know its kinda dark, but that's what had me interested in the show. Basically Hubbell takes Michelle to his home town to be his wife, and she decides to go with it because she needs the change of pace. And its kinda awkward because she's this outsider. But she has Hubbell to get her through it. Only he dies, so now she's like his wife of maybe just a couple of days, now transplanted into this wacky town. And I'm excited to see where this goes for her.
