TV commentary:
Jormungand- Finally finished this up. Heh, I'm not an avid anime watcher, I've only watched a handful of series (although thinking about it, I've seen a lot more than I think- certainly not as much as an actual anime fan, but prolly way more than the average person) but it does seem like a lot of anime create a cool and interesting world, introduce awesome characters I like, have them have fun adventures... for the first 3/4 of the series. Then the shows seem to get into "the real plot", and its often some crazy philosophical bs that I just don't agree with. Maybe its a cultural thing, like I'd see eye to eye with the sentiments more if I was Japanese or something.
But yeah, there's nothing wrong with an overarching arc, I enjoy shows like that. Its just a lot of the times, I do not like where that arc goes. I mean, there were hints throughout the series that there was more to Koko than meets the eye, that she had some plan going on. I just think her plan is stupid. She builds a quantum computer that will do something that closes off the sky to air travel. They don't detail it, prolly because the writers don't know how one would actually accomplish that. Like she launched a whole bunch of satellites (or rather her company did, I think she was just co-opting them), and Book Man seemed to think she took control of all the world's information systems, enough so that she could move different groups around like puppets. Both literally (by messing with GPS coordinates to make people wander exactly where she wants to go) and figuratively (by dropping e-mails and faking orders to manipulate people into doing this or that).
So I guess with a super computer and control over the flow of information, she could mess with plane avionics and cause things to crash. But people were flying long before all this fancy equipment, like I don't see how her system could mess with a crop duster or single engine Cessna or something. But I guess she could combine messing up advanced planes with controlling anti-aircraft systems to shoot down planes that she couldn't crash. Or I guess the satellites could have weapons systems on them, and its like Winter Soldier, where the satellites could take anything out in the world since they cover the whole world.
I'm overthinking this, the main point is she wants to seal off the skies to make the world stop having war. If they still disobeyed her, she'd stop sea travel, and then land travel (how the eff would she do the last one?) And I dislike this for two reasons, 1) You can't force the world to be "peaceful". That's like saying, don't kill anybody or I'll kill you! But its also like if at the end of PoI, Greer and Samaritan won. Its a little different because Koko's quantum computer doesn't seem to be an ASI. Its just really powerful and follows her whims. But its still the same, someone becoming a virtual god and eliminating free will for "the good of humanity". Its like who cares if around 700,000 will die when Jormungand first comes on line? The billions of other people in the world will no longer have to deal with dying from war.
And that's bullshit! Killing a fraction of people to make the world better for everyone else is never a solution. Sure, its good for the people who survive, but who decides who has to lay down for everyone else to have a good life?
Problem #2 I have is, you want to destroy "war", whatever. But it seems like such a weird way to do it. its like the writers wanted to do it in some "poetic" bullshit method that's overly fancy. Koko's already eliminating free will by activating Jormungand. She claims its a choice, stop or she'll do more, but that's not actually a choice. What are they going to do, say no? And like why bother with the fucking pretense? Instead of saying, stop fighting or you can't travel, why doesn't she just destroy their weapons, take apart their armies? Its a ridiculous round about way of doing things when they established her as all powerful.
In any case, I guess I have a third problem, and its what Kasper brought up, its naive of Koko to think she can stop war. I mean, she can check aggression with Jormungand, but that's not the same as stopping people from wanting to fight. Like Kasper said, he went down the line, if she takes out this, he'll sell that. No more guns, he'll sell swords. She somehow stops people from mining ore to make blades, he'll freaking sell clubs and sharp sticks. People can kill other people will their bare hands.
And all she's doing is pissing people off. She may have an awesome team of bad-asses, and powerful allies, and a super computer, but she's not actually a real god. She's not omnipotent or immortal. If she has enough willing enemies they can take her down eventually. She's a dictator forcing people to be a certain way, which is no better than the war mongers she's trying to make extinct by doing this.
Whatever, I like that everyone who lived to the final set of eps actually survived. Because like I said, this series was chock full of cool characters. I just think the show ended on a dumb note.
