TV commentary:

Broadchuch- Interesting to compare the season finales of both Broadchurch and Gracepoint. Firstly, Hardy's interrogation of Tom about the computer did seem a little more.. hostile. Like he was way more accusatory, like Tom could actually be a suspect- particularly bring up e-mails where Tom was all, "I could kill you!"

Then the interviews- it was a little disconcerting that there were other people in the room when Hardy was interviewing Joe, and also when Ellie was interviewing Nigel.

But yeah, things play out much differently. Heh, [livejournal.com profile] isabel79 had mentioned the special hugs. Like in Gracepoint, nothing happened until that night, when Joe tried to like stick his finger in Danny's mouth. But apparently in Broadchurch they just hugged a lot. Clothed. Joe says its because he just wanted to be held by Danny. But yeah, Danny didn't try to run off and accidentally hit his head in Joe's story, they actually go inside. Danny basically accuses of Joe of wanting to do things, and then says, "Why don't you do those things with Tom!" which causes Joe to flip out and strangle him. Like I said, since he was strangled here, it couldn't play out the same way as Gracepoint, because you couldn't have Tom "accidentally" strangle Danny.

Also, Ellie was jetlagged, since they had flown back all the way from Florida, whereas in Gracepoint, it sounded like they stayed in the same timezone, but she was just tired because they took two planes and had a several hour drive.

Subtle differences during those scenes- when Hardy reveals Joe being the murder to Ellie, he says they have him in custody, but unlike in Gracepoint, he never says Joe confessed. Ellie only dry heaves over the news as opposed to barfing like in Gracepoint. And when she asks to see Joe, and Hardy is all, "Don't hit him or do anything that could jeopardize a conviction", British Ellie is all, "He's bigger than me, and there are cameras everywhere, what could I do?" American Ellie really went there for the kicks though. Like British Ellie still kicks him when he was down, but American Ellie kicked way harder.

Oh, and when Ellie goes home to pick up her things, in Gracepoint, its no big deal, crime scene guy tells her how sorry he feels for her. In Broadchurch, he gives her his condolences, but they bring up having to accompany her through the house at all times. So its like there's less trust there.

Also, Hardy calls back reporter girl to give her advance warning about the announcement of Danny's killer, whereas in Gracepoint, Jessica Lucas just flounced out of there, done with all that.

Given Tom didn't actually kill Danny in Broadchurch, obviously that went all differently. Tom seemed a lot more broken up about Danny not wanting to be his friend anymore, whereas in Gracepoint they did seem to just have grown apart. Plus Danny talks about finding a new friend. Since Tom didn't follow them up to the cabin in this version, he only just then figures out it was his dad.

There was also much more hubbub about the announcement. And, I guess since the character interactions were slightly different, it was a little surprising to see the reactions- they kinda hint at something between the priest and the innkeeper developing in Gracepoint, but here she immediately goes to see him about the announcement. And ha, it was weird to see Nigel just show up at the Latimers all, "Oh, who's the killer?!" In the American version, even though he worked for Mark, I don't recall him interacting with the rest of his family, so it was funny to me that he's like hanging out in their living room. Like, wasn't he just accused of Danny's murder previously? Wouldn't they be all, "Oh hey, guy we thought might have killed our son!"

And I guess they don't mention the killer's name in the report, so when the newsfolks are listening to it at the newsroom, Ollie's mom shows up, revealing to him that its Joe and how they have to pack and go, I guess to be there for Ellie?

We also see more reaction from the family, with Chloe crying at the taped off residence of Ellie, and Mark in a field all pissed off and screaming at nobody. The confrontation with Joe at the jail goes pretty much the same. The weird thing though is in Broadchurch people keep going, "Why didn't you just molest your own son!" Actually, slight difference- American Mark warns Joe he better hopes he never gets out, whereas British Mark says he thought he'd hate him, but he just pities him now, because he has nothing.

Since reporter lady is still around though, they actually have her try to warn Ellie not to talk to anyone before Ellie goes off to see Beth. (But that still plays out the same way, with Beth being all, "How could you not know?)

Also, I heard in Broadchurch Hardy and Ellie are a little closer than they are in Gracepoint? Because they talk later about Joe, with Ellie trying to figure out what he is. I had heard some people who had seen both say this would've been weird in the American version because they're not that close and she wouldn't have talked to Hardy like that.

But yeah, its funny that Gracepoint is over whereas Broadchurch is continuing, since there was a feeling of finality in the latter. I mean, there was no, Tom secretly being the killer and Hardy finding out, so its not like there was a cliffhanger. Indeed, it seemed over- Ellie says she doesn't think she can stay a cop given the turn of events, and Hardy health is failing, so he's out too.
