TV commentary:

Sherlock- aav('Whaaaatttt?!!') Talk about a crazy way to end the season! (And wtf is up with these 3 episode seasons?!)

So, Moriarty performs the "crime of the century" by hitting the bank of England, the crown jewels and staging a potential jail breakout at the same time. He lets himself get caught almost immediately, and is put on trial, and acquitted because he blackmails all the jurors.

Sherlock figures out Moriarty has no interest in things like the Crown Jewels or other forms of material wealth. No, the whole thing was just an advertisement for the fact that he has a computer code key that can break into anything. Moriarty confirms this and disappears.

Meanwhile a bunch of different spies have taken up residence near Sherlock and Watson. No, its not to kill them, but Moriarty has told these people that he left the key with Sherlock. But he hardly has any time to figure out where the key is, because Moriarty has instituted an ingenious plan to destroy Sherlock.

He sows seeds of doubt amongst the police and the public that Sherlock is a fake. And they will believe it because people like to see the exalted brought down. To that end, he's been the source for an investigative reporter doing the expose, even creating a fictional identity of an actor named Richard Brooks, claiming he was an actor that Sherlock hired to make his mark. And he knows enough about Sherlock that he throws in the lies with the truth to make the story all the more believable.

And how does know all this? Apparently Mycroft told him. They already knew about the key, and tried to get it out of Moriarty, but he was only responsive if Mycroft would tell him about Sherlock. Which wait, so between the beginning of this season and the end of the last ep, British intel caught Moriarty and had him locked up, letting him go last ep?! Why?! Did I miss something there?

Anyways, this all leads to the climax, where Moriarty tricks Watson away with a false report that Mrs. Hudson was shot. Watson is shocked to see Sherlock so blase about it, not even going to the the hospital to see all about it. But its because Sherlock knows its a ruse. And he lets John believe it because he needs him out of the way so he can confront Moriarty at the roof of the medical examiner place.

At first, Sherlock figures he has the key, that Moriarty "gave" it to him by tapping it out in binary for Sherlock to remember. But then Moriarty reveals the truth. The code was all BS. He just paid some guys off to open the doors and shut down the alarms! He then tells Sherlock he has to kill himself, or else the 3 assassins he dispatched will kill Watson, Mrs. Hudson, and Lestrade.

At first, Sherlock thinks he can get Moriarty to call it off. He'll think of some way to get the recall code out of him. Moriarty eventually comes to the conclusion Sherlock can. So he kills himself, giving Sherlock no choice but to kill himself. Watson arrives just in time, having gone back to their flat and seen Mrs. Hudson was okay and it was a trick to get him away from Sherlock. Sherlock calls him, claims that Moriarty was telling the truth and he's a big fraud. Then he jumps from the top of the building, killing himself!!

So, the world thinks Sherlock is a big fraud, and Watson, Mycroft, and Mrs. Hudson are devastated. Apparently, Watson has been seeing a shrink over all this, and in the end, he and Mrs. Hudson visit his grave, and Watson begs Sherlock to let this all be a trick, and he's really still alive. He gets no answer. But then we cut to Sherlock watching from the shadows, alive and well!

First, let me say, its odd that Lestrade was the third target. I mean, not Molly or Mycroft? Or send 5 assassins altogether! Its weird to me Moriarty would go after Lestrade and not the other two. Like even though Sherlock is dismissive of Molly and is a total dick to her most of the time, and Mycroft and Sherlock aren't exactly the most brotherly of brothers, if you rank "people Sherlock cares about", I would think they'd rank over the inspector!

But that's neither here nor there. For Sherlock to fake his death, he would have had to know ahead of time what Moriarty's plan was. I mean, Sherlock definitely knew it was building up to having him kill himself, but I guess he would have figured Sherlock would only do that if his friends were in danger. Which makes me think he engineered Moriarty's death and caused him to commit suicide- because it didn't seem like Moriarty was going to kill himself until Sherlock convinced him they were the same, and thus Sherlock would be able to get the recall code from Moriarty. So to me it seems Sherlock knew Moriarty's plan would require Sherlock to kill himself, and that it would be foolproof, and there was no way for him to get out of it, so the best he could do was kill Moriarty.

And I assume Molly was in on the cover up? I mean, this ep had him soften towards Molly, and it seems like he realized that Molly is actually even more loyal to Sherlock than Watson is. Like even though she is so ordinary and boring to him, she sees the real him, sees through the facade he puts up even in front of Watson. But yeah, a medical examiner would be quite useful in covering up a death. (I wonder if they'll show how he pulled it off!) And he said he needed her near the end, but we never find out what he needed her for.

Owel, a crazy and sad end to the season. Now, is it coming back for a third, or is that how it all ends?
