I forgot what TV site I was on that mentioned the Extras Christmas special was on tonight, which reminds me that I still haven't seen all of season 2 Extras yet. I checked, and they're all on On Demand now, so started watching those. Ah, its still a hysterical show, though I do cringe at the changes he had to make for the show's version of the Office. I'm curious if that could've actually happened with the UK Office, but thankfully Ricky Gervais had more backbone than his character on Extras. I mean, shows like to poke fun at the higher ups being morons and wanting to make insane changes that they think are for the best but when you hear about you can't imagine any normal person thinking they're good. Then again, there's that JMS horror story about Crusade where he was getting notes from the TNT execs that the thief chick should "have this affectation where she wants to screw guys of different species"? That's moronic!
I mean, yeah, I've made comments about how awesome sapphic encounters between female characters on various shows would be, and approve of them in slutty outfits, but even I realize it can be dumb and lowest common denominator trash if done in certain ways. Anyways, I digress, I do wonder what things would be like if The Office was more like As the Whistle Blows. I mean, it was such a huge hit over there, spawning different versions in several countries, including our own. And so if it failed because the execs made it all LCD with bad wigs and catchphrases, then there wouldn't be an American version, and without that to anchor NBC's comedy night done right, would the other shows have done well? Sure, they're funny, but I think the fact that they could all be clumped together on one night helped a lot. Like Scrubs, its a hilarious show, and I thought it did decent, but before Earl and the Office, it seemed to be shuffled around the schedule a lot. And if there was no Office, would Steve Carell gotten as big and famous? Then again, mebbe he could've still been big from those Judd Apatow projects. Who knows?
Owel, finished up the Invincible hardcovers and I still have to say its a pretty good series. Its a solid story and the various references, while funny, also show a clever awareness of the comic book world as a whole. There were more than a few meta moments, like the "will they/won't they" remark about the Science Dog comic.
About to head to mass soon- I checked weather.com, does the windchill really make it feel like 25 degrees out there?! It was in the 70s a couple of days ago!
