Glee- Eh, since its uncharacteristically quiet right now, decided to make a top 5 musical performances of the 2nd season (so far). I was gonna do top 10, but I could only find 8 that I felt really strong about, I decided to curb it down to 5. Particularly since we still have almost half a season to go.
1) "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)", Michael Jackson, as done by Artie- I love everything about this performance. Artie does a real great job with the singing, and Mike's dancing is phenomenal in this one, particularly with all the Michael Jackson-isms he throws in throughout the song. Though my favorite move of his in the video is when he braces himself on Artie's chair and wall runs across the locker. Its just a cool move. Plus, I love how Brit looks in this with the suspenders and short shorts and the knee high sock, its one of her hotter looks. Also, I'm kinda amused at Finn dorking out after the performance yelling "Tenderoni!"
2) "Teenage Dream", Katy Perry, as done by Blaine- Our first introduction to Blaine's character, and talk about an incredible first impression! I'm a little biased because I love the song already (one of my favorite songs of 2010) and he does an amazing cover of it. I particularly enjoy the show choir feel to it, plus it was hilarious the way the other boys were totally dorking out during the performance.
3) "Time Warp", from the Rocky Horror Picture show, as done by New Directions- I think what I like about this song is that a good portion of the group all get something to do in this song. As Emma said in the next episode, it really showcased how much talent New Directions contains. Finn, Quinn, Kurt, Artie, Tina, and even Brit all get a turn. Heh, people did complain that they split Riff Raff's lines between Kurt and Finn, but if you watch the original song, I think both Kurt and Finn perfectly emulate the parts of Riff Raff they have. Because while Kurt has Riff Raff's inflections in the "speaking" portions down pat, when Riff Raff starts belting out, that's not really Kurt's singing range, its closer to how Finn sings.
4) "Marry You", Bruno Mars, as performed by New Directions- Okay, this was kinda corny, but a good kinda corny. I mean, it was apt for the situation. Plus, I've mentioned before how I really enjoy the songs where everyone gets a chance to do something, and they do. It was just a fun, cheesy number.
5) "Thriller/Heads Will Roll", Michael Jackson and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, as performed by New Directions- Thriller is an amazing song, so you'd think mashing it up with something else would be blasphemous. But they manage to mix the songs well. Plus, I think its pretty cool they use the song of a lesser known group like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs to mash with. But anyways, its a cool production, particularly with the zombie-ishness. And I like the way Karofsky is standing there on the sidelines, being the only holdout not to join, but as he sees them perform he realizes, "Hey, this is actually pretty awesome!" and overcomes his hang ups and decides to join the Glee club and the rest of the football team.
Also, Artie's zombie make up was pretty freaky, particularly since they made a fake mouth so when he was singing, his mouth wasn't moving "right" giving it a creepy feel. And I also like how they gave Finn the ultra low synthesized demon-like voice for the Vincent Price parts, it sounds way cooler like that than on the Glee cast recording where he's just saying it in his normal voice.
