Friday Night Lights- Hey, its Street! Nice to see him back. Actually, its an interesting dynamic to have someone like him visit, because while obviously a lot of the old players are loyal to coach, they're still Panthers, while Coach is a Lions man now. So you get a nice split loyalty there- I mean, in the Panthers vs Lions game, it was the Panthers sideline Street was on, being one of their most celebrated players. And I'm sure like a lot of people, he wasn't too keen on what happened in that game.
Its interesting the 180 the Lions have done between this and last season. Last season, they were the underdogs. This season, they have a perfect record so far. However, they also share many traits as the "bad" team in this genre. It was a pretty low blow (and illegal?) for someone to post the juvie records of the Lions players. Let's not forget Vince was quite the thug before Coach gave him a chance and turned his life around last season. But these last few games, the Lions have been coming off as barely controlled animals! I mean, even the guys without records, Luke and Buddy Jr are smacking people down with big hits. Though given how much trouble Luke got in for innocently injuring that one player in the beginning of the season, you'd think he'd show a little more restraint.
Its interesting though- obviously the Panthers fans were pissed at the trouncing they got, particularly with that insult to injury long bomb Vince threw at the end even though they were in the lead and they should've taken a knee. That older coach was not pleased at the Lions' behavior, and Coach was kind disappointed in his team too. But did the rest of the Lions fans feel that way? Buddy was prolly happy to see his son do good, Billy was talking smack along with the rest of the players, and Vince's dad was having a good old time showing Vince off to all those scouts. Even that random fan thought it was cool how Luke laid that one guy out. So while the Lions seem to be getting a rep as the bad boys, I'm curious if the Lions fans care, as long as their team has the perfect record?
The thing with Vince's dad is amusing, particularly the way he decided not to try and BS coach, and just outright told him, "I'm showing my kid off and talking to these other schools, I could give a rat's ass if you think its a good idea". Now, I don't think Vince's dad is using Vince per se. Like its not like he's just a meal ticket. I think now that he's reconnected with his son, he's ultra proud of the boy and he wants his son's star to rise to the top. And he feels Vince just has too much talent and too many opportunities available for Coach to slow-play it.
The camaraderie developing between Luke and Billy is pretty hilarious. I'm amused at the totally white trash workout program Billy put Luke through, and then giving him advice on Becky. I wanted to scream at Luke, "don't listen to that doofus, he's a dumb-ass!" Although it was funny there when he set things straight with Becky, and he's all, "Hey, it kinda worked!" Because it did! Even though he was acting like a total dick, Becky was more puzzled than pissed, so she just confronts him about his moronic behavior, and he fesses up and apologized, and they're closer. So it did work, just not the way it was intended. Also, I was kinda amused that Luke found out Mindy was a stripper and he kept nonchalantly trying to find out when she worked.
Other things, Julie is being a lazy ass, so her mom sneaks off to the college to get her books, because like hell she'll let Julie waste that semester. Marvelous acting by Connie Britton by the way. I mean, she didn't actually confront TA guy about his affair with Julie, just asked for his books, but I loved how she was just able to convey in body language, "You fucker!" Like how she subtly changed her posture once she realized this was the guy who frakked her daughter. At least she was more classy than the guy's wife, didn't cause a scene or anything.
All in all, I'm kinda curious how this season will end. I mean, it sounds like a college wants to offer Coach a full time position as HEAD coach, as opposed to first season when TMU just gave him an assistant position. He seems to like shaping guys at the HS level, but then again, his team is a bunch of dicks currently. Well, kinda, I mean, they're cocky, but I think a lot of it is because they were the whipping boys last year, and now they're on top so they're just happy to be so great. But they're not as douche-y as the antagonists in this genre. I was thinking, its the last season, they got their asses kicked all around the previous season, even if they got a small victory there at the end. They have to win state. But the current state of the team, is it a good arc if they do actually win state?
Of course, we don't even know if they'll last that long- Vince is a rising star, but he's plagued with problems, and there's that one guy lurking in the shadows, prolly looking for revenge. Not to mention Luke is pretty resentful of all the attention Vince is getting. Perhaps they'll start losing as these problems start coming to a head, and when they're down in the dumps, Coach will lead them back up and while they'll have lost some games, they have a good enough record to be in contention for State? And at that point they'll be a team who does deserve to win State and Coach will lead them to victory?
