I mean, I like the ability to be sitting in bed and be able to use my phone to bring up videos or music on my computer. The user interface is simple enough, you can control playback and unlike youtube remote, volume control. You can browse files on the phone and select what you want. Though it only displays by filename and there's no search function. Which is fine for my videos, as those have names that are self evident. But for music though, its a pain, since I can't search, I have to manually scroll through the songs, and since its only showing the filenames, that makes thing even more difficult to fine since many of the files start with the track number. Also, there's no ability to have it just play all the music from a group of folders. You can pick a song in a folder, and it will also play any other songs in that folder but it won't play across folders. It does support playlists (in the m3u format) though.
Which makes the whole thing less useful for me if I can't easily pick and play music. Heh, and since it plays the media in VLC, I had just set up scrobbling to work in VLC! Though what's up with it not scrobbling until the song is done? That's like the opposite of the way everyone else does it! Like I wasted like half an hour troubleshooting since the tracks I was playing in VLC weren't showing up on last.fm and I thought scrobbling wasn't working, until I searched around and saw it didn't hand off the info until the track was finished. Of course, one could ask why I scrobble anyways, like who cares what I listen to! Though honestly, I only set up scrobbling so LJ could autofill in what I actually was listening to at the time to the "listening to" section of my posts.
But I digress, overall, gmote is kinda useful, but not as useful as I'd like due to the limited ability to search for and select music.
