Oct. 28th, 2009 09:14 pmCool, the roomie got the "Seaside" expansion for Dominion. Definitely some interesting additions, including some that might help him with his typical strategy. The 3 main new cards are the island, the pirate ship, and the native village. They even get special little mat cards for use with them.
The island- this is an interesting card. Its worth two victory points, and once its in your hand you set it and another card from your hand aside for the rest of the game. So I guess its good to get provinces out of your deck so they won't clutter up your hand, and you don't have to worry about things like saboteurs and other things that could possibly trash it. A throne room lets you set 2 cards aside in this manner.
The pirate ship- this is like the thief but better. Each time you use it in the a-hole way, you put a coin on the pirste ship mat. The non-a-hole way to play it as extra coinage, worth however many coins you have on your pirate ship at the time. So not only are you screwing over your opponents, eventually you can use it for some extra bank.
The native village- This is pretty useful with cards that let you re-arrange your deck. Anyhoo, when this card comes up, you can choose to put the top of your card face down on the native map and it stays there like cards on the island. However, you can also play it as an action wherein you take all the cards on your native mat and put them back in your hand. I guess if you're someone who wants to play the "perfect hand" you can kinda force it to come up by setting aside those cards onto the native village. And once it come up, serendipity!
Other cards of interest:
Treasure map- this one sounds kinda insane to me- it costs 4. But if you get two of these in your hand you, trash them AND GET FOUR GOLD CARDS WHICH GO ON TOP OF YOUR DECK! So its a guaranteed province (more if the last card gives you more buys!) WTF?!
Explorer- this is another nice one- if you have a province in your hand when you play it, you get a gold, otherwise you get a silver. Even nicer, it goes into your hand! Not bad for a 5 cost card, I think.
Embargo- Ooh, this is a nasty one! When you play it, you choose one of the piles in the supply and put an embargo chip on it. With a throne room, you need not put the embargo chip on the same piles. So what does this mean? When someone buys a card from that pile, THEY GET A CURSE FOR EACH EMBARGO CHIP ON IT!
Sea Hag- a nastier witch, the curse one gets is placed on top of your deck, screwing you over even more.
Smugglers- This is a cool one. You get a copy of anything the person who went before you costing up to 6, i.e., they buy something worth 6, its like thanx for giving me one too!
Navigator- You look at the top 5 cards of your deck, and either choose to discard them or re-arrange them in any way you want. Obviously, its not useful unless you have another action that lets you draw cards or something like the native village. Well, it is useful for getting rid of crap cards so you don't get them next turn. But its an all or nothing thing, you have to discard all the cards, or re-arrange them, but you can't just discard some.
Tactician- this one lets you discard your hand. Good to use if your cards are crap, because you know what you get from discarding your hand in this way? Next turn you get +5 CARDS, +2 ACTIONS, AND AN EXTRA BUY! Yeah, the latter two parts are mimicked by other cards, but that's a lot of extra cards you get.
There's 26 new cards total, but those are the ones that stuck out in my mind.
TV Commentary:
South Park- Oh, BTW, is Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" something you can actually play on Rock Band? Or is that just South Park making stuff up? Because as Cartman showed, that would be a kinda awesome song to do!
And I don't understand this "Secret Girlfriend" show. So its a POV show, where the other actors act as if you, the viewer, are a character on the show? Oh, and its full of scantily clad hot chyx acting all HOTT?
And dammit, I've had "She's Got the Look" stuck in my head because of that one Episodes from Liberty City commercial. BTW, did I mention how awesome the new weapon additions are two of my all time favorites, the AA-12 auto-shotgun, and the m249 SAW. Well, technically, I prefer the upsized MK48 chambered for 7.62mm, but caliber is meaningless in the game, so same diff! Heh, I also learned there's one new aspect of the game when the fuzz is on you. If you kick enough ass, eventually they decide they don't want any part of you and your stars go down.
