After work, dropped off the roomie to pick his car up at the shop, saw "The Informant" with
clevemire, then had dinner with the usual suspects at Longhorn. Kinda stuffed ourselves there.
TV Commentary:
Dollhouse- tonight's ep was an intriguing theme. They've mentioned before they don't let actives participate in really deviant sexual stuff, like they supposedly won't market them out as subs. I don't know if that's true, or if its just a line Adelle says. That being said, if they don't do that, you'd think they'd not just take any kinda mission if the money is right and end up going by trial and error to discover any psychological problems that may spring up.
I mean, what kinda retarded mission was that, even if Echo didn't glitch like that, what was the end game? I doubt it was a long term mission, so he hired them to make someone who could bond with his kid because he can't. Okay, so she does. Then what? I mean, he can't hire her forever, what does he want?
And what the hell, they saw how crazy Echo got, its like gee, maybe you want security in there with Topher during the wipe, just in case?
I do like the parallels between Echo and November (or rather, Madeline). Both end up losing a child, but Echo doesn't want the pain to go away and be asleep and numb, whereas Madeline was the exact opposite, wanting to stop feeling anything about her daughter's death. Though, thinking about it, I'm not sure how being a doll would stop Madeline from feeling that loss.
I am glad they brought her back. She's big by Hollywood standards, but I still think she's cute and has amazing eyes. I'm guessing this isn't the last we've seen of her, given their insistence she's perfectly fine. But even beyond that, Echo accidentally rammed her head into an electrical light, so that could mess her up. Besides, Epitaph One hints something bad happened to her.

Date: 2009-10-03 06:14 pm (UTC)I'm still skeptical about that as a viable mission. Its okay, so the baby has a loving mother for the first few months. Then that gets taken away! Are they just using her to tide them over for that supposed period until it will be fine to start using a nanny? I always heard it as the first few years though. I mean, having a loving mom for a few months, then switching over to a stranger and a father who keeps him at a distance? I still think the kid would be kinda screwed up.

Date: 2009-10-03 06:30 pm (UTC)Because she was really explaining it to the audience. This kind of thing happens in TV all the time. Often it starts with "let's go over the plan one more time" or something like that. But clearly it's a conversation they'd had before, and we're to believe she was repeating it to him to reassure him of his initial decision. But really if they'd shown things in order with him coming in and saying "my wife died, I need a new mother for my kid" it would've been less interesting, and if they'd done that conversation as a flashback, it would've been overly complicated.

Well, partly I think they assume a few years would be too expensive for the guy to hire a doll for, so the writers declare it "a few months." After all, these people know way more about how the brain works than actual modern science does, so who's to say we're not wrong about lots of things?
Also, and more importantly, I think the guy was assuming he would stop blaming his baby and develop a connection once he had some time to grieve for his wife. He just wanted a loving parent to bridge that gap. And he did become attached by the end of the show.
