You could've lettered in Mathketball
Apr. 22nd, 2009 10:18 amHeh, reading Ain't It Cool today, I was amused how Harry Knowles looked like a durned fool complaining about one of the Wolverine promos, the one about Emma Frost (there's also one for william Stryker, the the Blob, John Wraith, Deadpool, Sabretooth, Gambit, Wolverine, and a general one featuring many of the main mutant characters. BTW, I didn't realize the blob was played by Keamy from Lost in a fat-suit). No, the complaint wasn't about how Emma Frost was supposed to be hotter, he was baffled that she was this glowing disco ball chick. Apparently, he didn't know of her secondary diamond mutation. How can one be a self professed uber geek (and to me that means all the geekiness categories, from comics to video games to rpgs to fantasy/sci fi among other things) and not know that?! It should be common knowledge to any comic book geek!
And I don't think "Oh, I only read X-men during so and so's run" or I stopped reading in the 90s is a valid excuse. Well, if one's knowledge is lacking, then I think one shouldn't claim to be a comic book geek. Or at the very least, if you're gonna make a living writing about such things, do some friggin' research first so you don't end up looking like an idiot!
So the Caprica movie came out on DVD yesterday. I haven't watched it yet, but there are a few things I heard that I'm trying to reconcile with BSG. So if you've seen the promos, Eric Stoltz and Joe Adama's daughters were killed in a suicide bombing, and Eric Stoltz wants to bring them back. So this is all before the first Cylon war, or before the final 5 showed up and gave the Cylons resurrection. Well, Cylons didn't even exist on the Colonies yet, I guess.
One thing I find amusing because it seems kind racist. Now, since this takes place in another world or worlds, they have a different concept of race. Yet, the suicide bomber still ends up being played by an A-rab looking kid?!
Now, it seems like Eric Stoltz's daughter Zoe, the bomber kid, and Andi from Kyle XY were converted to monotheism in school, so they were wanting to run away to Gemenon (or at least Zoe was wanting to, Andi chickened out, and bomber kid decided to set us up the bomb). But weren't the Gemenese the religious fanatics? Or at least they were known for their literal interpretation of the Sacred Scrolls, which makes me think they're all followers of the Colonial religion. Now, when Baltar's cult first sprung up, wasn't there a quorum meeting were Rosalin put forth something that would outlaw his cult, and then one of the delegates was all, "Couldn't this be used against Mithraists?" and then the Gemenese delegate was all, "Ooh, yeah, lets use this to outlaw Mithraism!" So while it seems there was a minor opposing religion that sprung up on Gemenon, it also seems like they were oppressed.
My point is that it seems kinda backwards the kids wanting to run away. I wanna say Caprica City is well, a city, and thus somewhat liberal and more tolerant of Monotheism then Gemenon. Its like, if you're a monotheism convert, why the hell would you want to run away to not only a big polytheist colony, but one that's very strict and intolerant. That's like some teen converting to Islam, then moving to a rural Southern Christian town! It does not make sense!
Anyways, it seems like Zoe ends up creating a sort of human version of cylon resurrection, since she uploaded a cybernetc copy of herself before her death. Now once Eric Stoltz finds out about it, he wants to recreate his and Joe Adama's daughters (Bill's older sister) and download Zoe's electronic copy into the precursor to the old-style centurions. So, they don't have skinjobs yet (and wouldn't since it seems like that's something the Final 5 brought to them). Ida know, if I had a loved one who continued to exist virtually in cyberspace after they died, I don't think I'd download them into anything other than a skinjob. Or at least something more human. I mean, if you can hang out with them in a Matrix-y world, why would you want to bring them into the real world in the body of something freaky looking like a Centurion?! Yeah, they can interact with the real world, but how is that a life for them. People would treat them like a freak!
Oh, and heh, I remember when they referenced Joseph Adama in BSG, they made it sound like he was one of those liberal lawyers who defended scumbags. Well, I thought they were gonna go for him being like Sandy Cohen in the OC, working in the public defender's office, trying to help the downtrodden not get a raw deal and give them a chance. But nope, he's a full on Mob lawyer. That's hilarious!
TV commentary:
OTH- Heh, tricky promos there for this ep. So they have this commercial where Peyton gets T-boned. But she was back on her feet soon afterwards. Well, relegated to bed rest, but you prolly wouldn't have known she was in a bad car accident. I guess they couldn't do the coma thing, since this show has done that multiple times already with Luke and Nate.
And hey, now that Skillz got dumped by Deb, I guess they're gonna try and fix him up with what's her name from What I Like About You who also played Fez's psycho gf on That 70's Show who's playing Jamie's teacher now?
90210- Also with the tricky promos. Heh, it had Naomi being all, "I'm going to destroy you!" to Annie in the commercials. And I was wondering how it was gonna get to that, because they seemed to be getting along well, and even the whole thing with her dad, I can't see what Annie could end up doing that Naomi would get really mad at her at that point. But nope, they were referring to Foosball. That's hilarious!
And what the? So Navid is going to marry Adrianna. See, at least this makes more sense than Secret Life, because he has liked her/known her for almost a decade now. Ben just met Amy when they decided they were in love! Still, I did think Adrianna was kinda rude. Here's this couple who seemed all excited about getting a kid, and yeah, its perfectly fine for her to change her mind, but she didn't have to start with the sarcastic questions! Who knows their sitch, they may be some couple who really wants kids and they can't, and this seems like the perfect opportunity, but then the girl bitchily changes her mind? At least on House, the first kid Cuddy wanted to adopt, the mother gave a reason, so Cuddy couldn't be that mad. But no whole "second thoughts" thing, she just started making it obvious she didn't want them to adopt by creating impossible sitches so anything they answer is wrong, its like way to make them feel bad about themselves and think it might be something they did to cause them not to get the baby!
Reaper- So now Sam's the Devil's heir apparent after accidentally beating Morgan in their contest? Anyways, is everyone on that show retarded? Talk about counting your chickens before they're hatched! They just put him on the plane to Rome, and don't think the devil might intercept him before he gets to Vatican city?! Also stupid, Ben for dumping Nina. She's a demon, does he not think there'll be repercussions?! Its not like she did anything wrong, so of course she's gonna feel incensed.
Fringe- So the tape at the end, was that Walter's voice on it? So Walter was there with Bell when they experimented on Olivia (or Olive, rather?) I'm curious to see where there going with this fight against a parallel dimension thing.
