So, Bettie Page died today? I'm ashamed to say I didn't even know she was still alive!

Penny Arcade's comments on their Wednesday article about Resident Evil 5 being built around co-op play had me thinking, who really wants co-op versions of such games?! I would consider MMORPG's co-op, but those have the benefit of being played online. And games like Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero are meant to be party games. Fighting games are more fun against other human players, but the really good fighting games, the AI opponent is good enough that you can still play and enjoy the game on your own.

As people have said, I think making RE5 heavily co-op is a bad idea. Like the squad based (or two man team) based shooters only do well if there's a decent single player component. You can play through Gears of War fine by yourself, and the AI of your teammates is decent. But look at Army of Two and Kane and Lynch. Those were too co-op. They focused on making gameplay sequences requiring two competent people to complete. Which is fine if you have a competent person to play with, but if you don't, and you get stuck with a crappy AI partner, it can get frustrating. No offense to gamers, but for a lot of them, if they had a friend to play with, they wouldn't be spending their time playing video games (HA!). These new co-op shooters are like 10 to 20 plus hour affairs! Unless they're playing with a sibling or roommate, their progress is limited by when they could get together to play the game!

Even worse with RE5, its survival horror. At least Left 4 Dead is at its heart a shooter- its run and gun gameplay. Even though the latest Resident Evils have been trying to be more shooter like, you can't play it like a shooter. Your character is a gimp compared to your typical shooter character. Not to say Leon Kennedy, Chris Redfield, or any of the other RE PCs aren't absurdly competent, but they just don't move or fight like a character in a shooter does. I mean, compare the Mercenaries mini-game in RE4 to an actual shooter. If Leon/Ada/Hunk/Krauser played like Master Chief, they'd carve through the Ganados like a hot knife through butter.

In RE, its fight if you must, but better to run. But again, even running from zombies and other monsters isn't so easy with RE's control scheme. And they want to make all the puzzle-solving and surviving co-op?! Its frustrating enough having to keep yourself alive, but to have to worry about two people?

TV Commentary:

So on the Office, the rest of the Office now knows Angela has been cheating on Andy with Dwight. But Andy was conveniently out of the room for that. So that has me confused on what it actually means for the two of them then? He doesn't really have any friends in the Office, so who would tell him? Plus, he's kinda crazy, so who would want to be the one to tell him? But at the same time, how could you not tell him? I mean, wouldn't it be kinda awkward to sit there like nothing happened while he acts like he and Angela are in a real relationship?

And for the audience, its hilarious, but in the world of the Office, isn't that kinda frightening? I mean, two of the three craziest guys in the Office (Creed being the third) involved with the same girl in the office? Andy punched a wall, and Dwight has various weapons hidden on his person and throughout the office! I'd fear for getting caught in the crossfire of their inevitable showdown!
