I'm glad to learn I'm not going insane. Or at least not more insane than I already was. Anyways, NBC released an early stream of the 2nd season premiere of Friday Night Lights. I watched it only a few hours after the link went up, and made a recap/commentary here. Cut to a few days later, when [livejournal.com profile] clevemire has gotten around to watching the stream and reading my recap and is all, "What the hell are you talking about, that's not how it happened at all!" I didn't think I misremembered it, so I pulled up the stream again, fast forwarded to the scene, and sure enough, it went down as he said it. But that wasn't how I remembered it at all! I figured I was slipping universes again.

If I may go off on a tangent for a moment, I use the term "slipping universes" often here, and I realize I may have only explained what I mean to a select few and others are prolly all confused. Anyways, you know how certain sci fi shows postulate an infinite number of parallel universes with minor to major variations? And on those shows they can travel between them (Sliders, the Quantum Mirror on Stargate)? That's what I refer to as slipping universes. I dunno, it just seemed like there were times throughout my life where people's personalities would do a total 180 for a few days (like I used to think they hate X, and then a few days later, they're all, "I love X", and then when I call them on it even later, they're all, "What are you talking about, I never liked X!"), or a fact that I knew about their personal history changed. It felt like I was slipping through parallel universes. I know, you're thinking, "So you think you're traveling between multiple universes, and in one such trip, the only variation was in an ep of some TV show you watch?" I just figured I could only slip between minor variations, hence not ending up in a world where the Germans won (why is that so popular in sci fi?)

But I digress. Cut to Friday, when other people who had seen the stream early and watched the ep last night were all, "That's not how it happened!" Turns out there are two versions. But why they changed the stream within a few days of posting it, I don't know.

Yeah, I remember seeing it with the bottle and being surprised when they didn't just call the police. I chalked it up to their being so scared that they just panicked. With the pipe it is more clearly violent intent as opposed to self defense.

Maybe that's why they posted the stream early... to see people's reaction to that particular moment? I suppose if they wanted to set up that storyline they had to be sure that it was believable. The problem is that it still stretches credibility and feels separated from the feel of the show. Yet, they can't just have this season be about "the championship season" again, so I suppose they have to try something new.

I am guessing the ensuing investigation and court proceedings will be a major dramatic arc of the upcoming season. Otherwise why have such a moment that overshadows almost everything else in the show in the first episode of the season...

I didn't see the bottle thing, but I think I would've liked it that way better. The pipe seems a little vicious and un-Landry-like... especially hitting him the second time. Plus, I agree, it doesn't fit with the rest of the show.

See, I think that's the problem with both versions, that there's a part that just doesn't ring true. Landry just beaning the guy with the big-ass pipe is very out of character for him. On the other hand, the self-defense bottle hit makes them dumping the body even more ridiculous. But it'll be definitely interesting to see if they're able to successfully do this storyline. Lucky for them, their first season has many fans giving them the benefit of the doubt.
