Obligatory WO post of the day. Now that I've played everyone at least once, here's my top 12 list (because everyone does 10):
For my ratings, in addition to effectiveness, I added points for style and bad-assedness. Plus I went with more than "they have one broken move that you can abuse over and over again" (i.e. Mitsunari), though some of my choices are like that. At the very least its an attack string you can spam, rather than a single r1 move. Top 4 are obviously Musashi, Keiji, Lu Bu, and Honda, as I've said countless times before. (I believe their 4th weapon damages are in the 96-100 range) I hate being specific with rankings, but if I had to, I'd do:
1) Musashi
2) Keiji
3) Lu Bu
4) Honda
I know, the 2 kings of combat, Lu Bu and Honda are only 3 and 4? First off, even though Honda is supposed to be SW's Lu Bu, I'd say that's arguable. He has the best personal/weapon stats of the SW-ers, but as I said, its his moveset that holds him back. Its decent, but his SSTTT lacks directional control, and his SSSTTT leaves his back exposed. Though I guess he's a power character, and thus can't be hit out of it anyways.
Lu Bu might be a little nerfed, I think. I mean, he still has a phenomenal moveset. And while he has the most powerful weapon in the game, I seem to be able to kill faster with other characters. I assume he also has the best stats still, so I can't give any explanation why? My only guess is the multiple hits from his c3 and c6 don't have the elemental effects on every hit? Thus, characters with more elemental hits get stuff like slay, might, and brave to come off more, thus causing more damage?
I'm not sure who really is #1 out of Keiji and Musashi. I realize the arguments I made about Honda's moveset could be made about Musashi's, but Musashi has a better (and extremely lethal!) STTT, and he's faster, and in a game like this, speed kills. As for Keiji, he has a great moveset. Both his SSTTT and SSSTTT hit all around him, but there's enough focus there for him to make the moves really effective against officers.
5) Zhou Tai- As I've said before, he just looks bad-ass all in black with the katana. Granted, he's less special since the inclusion of SW characters means more katana wielers. But that iai-jutsu stance is just too pimp. And you can just spam t or r1 to your heart's desire, and he'll kill officers and peons as effectively as the top 4.
6) Xiahou Dun- C'mon, Xiahou Dun is the definition of bad-ass! His speed and power are phenomenal. His C6 is excellent, and comes out fast enough that its hard to hit him out of it before he gets the last two hits out, which are the meat and potatoes of that combo. He slashes once in front, and then again behind, clearing a 360 swath around him. With agility, that comes out super fast, and with range, it clears a really big arc. And being a speed character, he can dash to get out of sticky sitches. His single T attack is also a good means of egress (or charging into a crowd)
7) Guan Ping- Slow like his pops, but makes up for it with a better moveset. But the gatsu/cloud-ish big-ass sword is badder ass than the supposed "god of war"'s halberd. I've said before that his c5 and c6 are bleh, but all you need is his c3. Its a ridiculously monstrous and cheap move that will just slaughter officers and scores of peons.
8) Mitsuhide Akechi- Good all around stats, good move set. His bread and butter is his c7. Its very similar to Xiahou Dun's c6, only he does one 360 arc around him instead of Xiahou Dun's 2 180 arcs. And with range, the arc on this is insane! Could it be any longer? msv('That's what she said!')
9) Ling Tong- Speed is this guy's name. He has to have the fastest attack speed in the game, I think. Once you knock a guy up, I think if you just keep on repeating his full S combo, he won't ever come down. Definitely an officer killer.
10) Xu Huang- I've sung his praises here before, just look at past posts to know what makes him so good. And he's a tech character to boot, meaning you can spruce up his very good moveset. His only problem is his speed. Guan Ping is slower, but he can clear out people around him faster- Xu Huang can to with r1 versions of his attack strings, but that takes up musou. So you can get overwhelmed if you run out of musou.
11) Zhang Liao- again, just a strong, solid character who's only limiting factor is his speed. His bread and butter is the c4, which comes out decently fast (fast enough to not get hit out of), hits in a 360 arc around him, and the elements come out pretty good- ice/slay/bolt is the definite choice for him.
12) Yue Ying- she's the reaper with her scythe. Just wade into crowds and do her c6. Unfortunately, she one of the slower chyx, so she can be hit out of it often in higher difficulties and amongst crowds. But once she gets going there, there's no stopping her.
This is just my opinion, I'm sure others may disagree with my choices.

Date: 2007-10-23 01:32 pm (UTC)Depending on the character r1 is much better at getting out of being comboed to death than musou attacks since you're using way less musou (particularly for SW characters, since they're forced to drain the musou meter with a musou attack) and thus can fill their bar up quicker when you switch out. A few of the power r1s are as good as other's musou attacks, and the majority of them at least clear a big enough space around them to get away and switch out if you use it to get out of being comboed to death.
Technique characters, r1 will do a counterattack if you hit at soon as you get hit, which in many cases is better than musou for stopping someone from comboing you to death and getting away. Doing a technique character's combos and replacing triangle with r1 for the "beefed up" version of the attack (if you think Musashi is insane now, replace the triangle with r1 when doing his combos) also works to thin out a mob enough/knock the generals away long enough to get away/switch out if you're in trouble.
I try not to use them too much either to conserve musou, but if I see a musou wine or the musou 10 seconds thing, I'll do the r1 buff if I'm currently using a character with such a thing or do the r1 versions of attack strings if I'm using a technique character, and then refill my bar with the item.
