Its all about the benjamins, fuzzy butt!
Feb. 25th, 2007 11:06 pmTwo things I'll never understand:
1) How Tommy plays pinball using his sense of smell. Seriously, it makes no sense.
2) Nihilism. How do you believe in nothing?!
Anyways, so I've been watching the Dresden Files. I had heard they were based on a series of books, so I wiki-ed it. The world sounds pretty cool, seems kinda WoD-ish. Actually, I'm curious if there is some influence of one on the other. The wiki article shows the first book in 2000, so WoD would have come first. One has to admit they're very similar- a powerful magical council keeping the supernatural out of mortal eyes and governing the behavior of the magical community, vampire and faerie courts (one thing I never got about WoD, was who wants to be a changeling? Lame!), different werewolves, angels/demons, etc. Well, obviously those are all common themes, though its the existence of all (particularly faeires/changelings, I mean, that's not as common as vamps, werewolves, mages and demons) in that world that highlight the similarities. Anyways, the universe is nicely setup, and the seven magical laws are pretty interesting. I would venture to say that it and Supernatural are the two WoD-est shows out there right now, with Dresden covering it from the side of supernatural beings like mages/wolves/vamps, and Supernatural the normal mortal/hunter side. I mean, you've had popular shows covering that genre before- buffy/angel and charmed to name a few, but I think Dresden and Supernatural very closely match up with WoD.
Ah, I just checked out the Oscar Winners. I wasn't really following it, so I didn't really have an opinion one way or the other. I usually only catch 2-3 of the 5 nominees for best picture every year. This year, it was Departed and Little Miss Sunshine, which were indeed two pretty good movies. So, the Departed won? That's a good choice.
So this week's ep was about labor vs management. This is definitely one of the better done non-main plot arc/daily fleet living eps. I mean, better than slummin' Apollo takes on the criminal underworld or Helo handles racism eps. Anyhoo, Tyrol brought up some pretty good points, as the refinery folks were practically slave labor. And if things kept on going the way they were, they'd have an entitled political class and lower class laborer where position is decided by birth.
Wow, Adama can be cold! I mean, threatening to execute Callie? I can understand that he has all of humanity to think about and if people don't do their jobs they're all dead. But its not like the division of labor is equally spread! Of course, I guess that's the point they were trying to make when Tyrol was talking about the awful working conditions to the prez and Adama and how they haven't had a day off, etc, etc, meanwhile Rosalin and Adama are frickin sitting down and having wine!
But wow, I was feeling bad for Tyrol when Cally was all "I'm so proud of you!" and him lying about Adama caving. But then Adama did give him a sitdown with the prez. And the prez was actually receptive! And Seelix is a nugget now? And am I one of the only people who actually keeps up with these background characters like her and Racetrack and Hot Dog?
I guess that's one thing I like about this show, the plethora of background characters. I've always felt that adds to a show, which was prolly why I liked BtVS/Angel and Veronica Mars. It makes the universe feel more "real" to have consistent background characters than to have a never ending revolving door of characters who you never see again after one ep.
Okay, that new Sandra Bullock movie, premonition, are they purposely trying to be all Dallas like with her getting out of bed and walking into the shower and seeing Dr. Doom in the shower? (Or is that Cole? Or Doc Troy? I suppose I could say Julian McMahon, but many people reading this would be all, who?) I mean, I was cracking up when they had that in the trailer.
I forgot to mention, I've been working on computers all weekend (big surprise). Set up a couple of new servers. Actually, I've mentioned this before, but I like how they've made computers more "installation" friendly. I had to install several cards. Before you had to like unscrew a bunch of things just to get the case open. Nowadays you just press down on a button or two and it pops open. No fuss, no muss. Even the rails just snap on instead of having to be screwed in. And thank god for flat panel monitors! Nice, light, and easy to cart around. So setting up the computers was not a hassle. Too bad finding shelf space for them wasn't as easy, so I was slowed down doing a little remodeling. They want me to put a new server in this one cabinet, and to free space, I can remove two servers already there. Which are 75lbs each! What motherfrakkin wise-ass made seventy-five pound effin' computers?! (Well, that would be Sun in this particular case, but I still find it ridiculous)

Date: 2007-02-26 01:20 pm (UTC)I also wish they didn't make the Sagitarrons religious freaks. They've already established the Geminese as the religious zealouts. It just doesn't fly with the only two main Sagitarrons we've seen up to that point, Dualla and Zarek. Dualla you can explain away as being an Uncle Tom, but Zarek was a Sagitarron "freedom fighter". He doesn't seem like a religous nutball, and I can't see him getting any kind of support from his own people if he didn't share their beliefs.

Date: 2007-02-26 09:49 pm (UTC)Hm... I never thought Tommy was actually deaf, dumb and blind... Just like autistic or appeared to be by the outside world. Cause yeah, considering the ball is behind glass he certainly couldn't feel it...

Date: 2007-02-26 10:05 pm (UTC)See, I would believe the "feeling" thing over the "smelling" thing though. Like maybe he could sense the subtle change in vibrations through his hands as the ball moved around the machine. But the song says he uses his sense of smell. Its un-possible!

Date: 2007-02-27 02:41 pm (UTC)According to Pinball Wizard, which is I guess a second hand account, he's either playing by sense of smell or by intuition. Tommy seems to be able to see his own reflection, so maybe he's looking at the silver ball and can sorta see it.
Anyway, the plot is lame, and any enjoyment of Tommy in any of it's forms should be based on the music and/or Ann-Margret covered in beans.
