Should we hug or something?
Feb. 22nd, 2007 10:15 pmAlas, tonight was the end of the OC. Ah, I'll miss you, show!
So, the finale cuts ahead 6 months. They pull off the old tv show trick where they jump ahead in time, and you have all these crazy changes. That way, the audience is all, "What the?!" and seemingly more engrossed as they want to know how all that happenned.
So Ryan and Taylor broke up during those months "because they're too different"?! So she goes back to Paris (is she back at the Sorbonne?!) instead of going to Berkley with Ryan. They finally do it at the Cohen's old house before the Julie-Bullitt nuptials (more on that later) and it ends with them being all passionate but still heading they're separate ways. And then they share a meaningful look at the Summer/Seth wedding. As I mentioned in a comment somewhere else, I think they purposely did that as a cop out. Townwooder's can take those hints and believe they do live happily ever after, even if you don't explicitly see it. And by not confirming it, they don't have to worry about alienating the fan base who were all about Ryan and Marissa (seriously, what's up with that?!) and thus were never behind Ryan and Taylor and thought he should find happiness on his own now that the least popular Cooper (or is that Jimmy? Kaitlin and Julie >>>> Jimmy and Marissa) was dead and buried. I can understand why they did it, but I still think its weak! Owel, I like to believe there's a Taylor Atwood waiting there when Ryan the architect comes home.
I didn't see what the big deal about Summer and Seth was. Its only a year, and its obvious that their love was strong enough to weather all that! So I don't know what they were worried about. Still, it was nice to at least get confirmation that they make it and get married. Heh, and I guess they couldn't get Neil to show up for the five seconds to walk his frickin' daughter down the aisle?! That's about as ridiculous as Lindsay not showing up to Caleb's funeral (that still gets my goat!).
Heh, and I had a feeling Julie was going to pull a Kelly Taylor and choose herself. Of course, the fact that she's carrying Frank's child complicates matters. But nice to see she went to college so she doesn't have to be a gold digger anymore. And both Bullit and Frank are still around and on "Team Julie"? Honestly, that has to be a totally weird situation.
EDIT:And I just realized this is exactly like the Rylor situation. That way the show could totally sidestep the issue of, "Does she marry the nice, rich, oil tycoon (who was annoying at first but soon became a fan favorite) who's really good to her and her family and friends, but she doesn't love? Or does she marry Hercules, whom she does love and who's child she's carrying, but used to be an abusive drunk though they've never portrayed him as being anything like that on the show?" On the one hand, while people might like the Bullit, I don't think him being devoted to her and her extended family is a good reason to get married. On the other hand, I think the show realizes lots of fans aren't able to get over the whole Frank being a wife and child beater (though in his defense, they didn't realize they were going to write Frank in as a love interest three seasons later when they wrote Ryan's backstory.) Either person they pick would probably disappoint some portion of fans. So again, they keep it ambiguous. Still, Julie striking out on her own is a really good ending for her, I think.
Also, I think it was kinda rude what they did to that gay couple living in their old house. I mean, honestly, if you look at the sitch from a objective standpoint, they basically show up at some strangers doorstep, demanding to buy the house from them. Owel, they have deep pockets (and I think Bullit's a nice enough guy that he'd throw his ridiculous wealth around to help), so its not like the gay guys wouldn't get a good deal, and I'm sure the Cohens would make sure they moved to a good house. But heh, they have got to be the nicest queens ever. I mean, first they have preggers Kirsten breaking her water over what I'm sure are some expensive rugs, then some rich oil tycoon and his huge ass family come around to have a wedding, then some dirty convict (OMG! Close the door!) and his strange neurotic girlfriend have sex in their bed! stv('How rude!') But hey, its a show, and it would be boring if they just said no and made them leave!
The Office was pretty good too.
Wow, looks like the Jim/Pam/Karen/Roy/Toby pentagon will actually come to a head. Some people thought Karen's joke on Jim at the party was messed up, but I think part of her's not sure where Jim's at, so this was a test to see if he'd actually cared. Its good Pam was honest. She might've wanted to phrase it differently though, because Roy heard all that as, "Oh, I cheated on you with Jim before the wedding, and that's why I dumped you!" The key points to highlight were that she had unresolved feelings for Jim but now that's over, she prolly didn't need to specify when she kissed Jim unless he asked.
But really, what's with them turning Roy into some violent maniac?! I would be worried if I were Jim, because Roy could easily kick his ass. Karen's fiesty though, I think she'd have Jim's back. Anyways, still I feel for poor Toby in all this. Wasn't he dating some hot chick though? But everyone focuses on that Jim/Pam/Karen/Roy square, and forget poor, nice Toby who also likes Pam and she doesn't even see him, really. Its so sad, its laughable. I mean, spending all that time and money to get Pam the duck since she said it was cute. But when he tries to give it to her, she doesn't realize why he's trying to give it to her, and she's all "Oh, don't you have a daughter?" Way to unwittingly duck the issue, Beesly! Heh, between this and the whole play interfering with Pam's art show, I hope he doesn't start resenting his poor daughter!
As for Michael and Jan. I'm not sure how I feel. I mean, I think even crazy weirdo idiots like Michael and Dwight deserve happiness, because despite their idiocy, they're pretty good guys at heart. On the other hand, I'm confused if Jan just feels sorry for Michael and is too much of a pussy to make a clean break, or that she see's his good heart through his incoherent ramblings and really is willing to have a go with him.
Argh, in my zeal to post something about tonight's OC and the Office, I totally forget to set Sarah Silverman to record. Owel, Comedy Central repeats their shows like a jillion times anyways, and sure enough, it comes on again at midnight.
