Aug. 17th, 2001 09:26 amSo I'm back. Anyways, I was recently reminded of that Fight Club quote about how people are just waiting for their turn to speak rather than actually listening. And its so true! Its amazing how oblivious people can be. I mean, they do pick up on some of what you say, but its like their brain just scans for keywords and they respond with something relevant to those keywords rather than what you are actually saying. About 99.9% of the time (hey, I can be wrapped up in my own world too sometimes!) I listen. For the most part, I just don't have anything to say. So I forgo my turn, as it were. I don't mind. Besides, I'm much better at working off of other people than I am at leading a conversation.
There are some people who take this whole waiting for their turn to speak to the next level. That means they don't even pay attention to what you say and as soon as there's a pause, they'll try to force their topic into the limelight. Now that I can't stand. Its like I'll be having a conversation among a group of people, and this person will just all of a sudden start talking about something else! WTF?! Its like, excuse me, we're having a conversation here. Do I interrupt you when you're talking? I don't demand that much out of life, but one thing is that I am shown the same amount of respect I accord to others. It baffles me on how self centered some people are. There are some people I can't even talk to because of this. I know for a fact that they're not paying attention and they have no idea what I just said. And when its my turn to listen, they act is if they want my opinion when in reality they just want me to tell them what they wanna hear. Why don't they get some mindless automaton to talk to? I'm not referring to those times when a person needs someone to talk to and the best thing the talkee can do is just listen. I'm referring to those people who are chatty bitches who'll drone on about some subject you don't know and/or care about and even when they ask you something and you tell them you don't know/care or make it obvious that you have no clue what they mean, they answer the question for you in their head and go on with their conversation. That way they can control the conversation to make it go the way they want it to go.
Oh well, if it seems I rambled on too long about this topic, I apologize. Truly self-centered people are just one of my pet peeves.
