Jan. 27th, 2009 10:19 amEven though you can google the internet for anything nowadays, sometimes its unpossible to search for certain things. Like if you know a tune to a song (but not the lyrics, or if its just instrumental) you can't really do a search on that. I mean, many of you know it took forever for me to figure out the brassy song was Chuck Mangione's "Feels So Good".
But like last night's ep of 24, that snazzy new sniper rifle Jack was using, it was something I'd never seen before. Its like how do I google for that? "24 sniper rifle season 7 1:00pm 2:00pm"? I was thinking it might be this new ASW modular sniper rifle from AIG and chambered in .338 Lapua. But I could just be blending the images in my head because those are the two newest sniper rifles I've seen. Plus, it just debuted at the Shot Show last week, so it would be weird for a show to already be using it.
And it would be total overkill for Jack to be using a .338 lapua at those ranges! I mean, he was hiding in the rafters pretty close by, it prolly wasn't even 100 feet. And the .338 is like the in-between round between the standard 7.62mm and the .50 caliber! Its for ranges of 1000m plus!
But speaking of Shot Show 2009, that SMGLee guy has a bunch of pics posted from it on these threads. Lots of cool stuff there. The stuff from KAC is kinda amusing. I have no idea what the hell that first thing is supposed to be. Its like a Stoner LMG with an underbarrel grenade launcher but the trigger and handles are like that of a chainsaw. What would it even be used for? You could only fire it from the hip, and the grenade launcher is practically unusable from that position. I guess its a joke?
But as another example of the various programs they have for the iphone, they have a picatinny mount for the iphone so you can mount it on one of the side rails of the M110 SASS and use it to run a ballistic calculator. And since its right there on the front side rail, you don't even have to take your hands off the weapon to use it, and its also right there in your field of view.
Oh, and I can't believe I spent yesterday afternoon learning about bueroza, brachina, dogai, excruciarchs, merregons, narzugons, and orthons. I wouldn't call myself an expert now, but I think I could be somewhat conversant on them.

Jan. 27th, 2009 02:26 pmMore on the what's that sniper rifle saga:
Comparing this screencap of Jack Bauer holding the rifle in question to the images of AIG's Asymmetric Warrior defense review had, they do look somewhat similar, despite the differing colors. But to the keen observer, there are obvious differences. One being the differing cheek piece on the end of the stock. The other being the ASW's front stock enshrouding the barrel on all sides, while Jack's rifle has the top and bottom rails, but the side picatinny rails only go half the length compared to the ASW, and you can see the barrel through the sides. Well, actually instead of having a full length rail, it seems to have two smaller ones on each side. Because after you see the barrel peeking through, a few inches more you get another picatinny rail, because even though the pic is kinda dark, one can easily make out the image of a laser sight there on the side.
The ASW uses AIG's new SABER-FORSST (FOlding Rifle Stock System Tactical) stock chassis. So mebbe its another rifle system using a similar chassis? Because looking closer, one can tell the magazine wells are slightly different as well.
EDIT: Ah, looking at another defense review article about AIG's modular stock chassis system, and the pics there match almost exactly, except for the mag wells. But that could because they had a different rifle system dropped into the chassis. But I wanna say at the very least the rifle he's using is using that stock chassis with at least 90% certainty.
(This is all geeky, I know, this is worse than the time on the HK boards when I was being insistent that the rifle Riggs was using to snipe people in the first Lethal Weapon was a HK PSG-1 and not a Sig SG 550 Sniper)
Isn't it funny how the major subjects I talk about on here are so across the spectrum? I mean, if I'm not babbling incessantly about some cool looking video game, car, or gun, I'm talking about some pairing on some teen drama, or what "deliciously interesting" or "interestingly delicious" bit of drama developed on said show?
