The Politician- The Politician is Ryan Murphy's new netflix show starring Ben Platt of "Dear Evan Hansen" and "Pitch Perfect" fame. (Heh, not surprisingly, they did manage to work him in singing at least three separate times) Also, being a Ryan Murphy show, it does have a lot of people from his other shows, including other "Dear Evan Hansen" star Laura Dreyfuss, who played Madison on Glee.
But yeah, I liked it a lot, great cast, lots of funny moments and amusing twists. I do hope it gets renewed for a second season, as they did a great job setting one up.
I am annoyed at some folks on tumblr being all, "really, bring out the bury your gays trope in the very first ep!?" Its not bury your gays if one gay out of like a dozen gets killed. The idea of the trope is a show doing that because they've felt checked off the gay check box and no longer know what to do with the character so they kill them off. But we've come far in these past few years, its nice to see the gays survive (great job, Killjoys!), but in trying to counteract the trope, that doesn't mean you can't kill any gays any more.
Like River's suicide is integral to the plot, particularly in how it affects Payton and even Astrid. Its not cheap or pointless, its given emotional weight. Actually, I read one dark take on the whole situation- how when River is talking about his previous suicide attempt, what stopped him was not wanting to die alone. But then here, he does it in front of Payton right after telling him he loved him. Which is pretty fucked up.
Also people complaining about how they're too old to play high schoolers or how these folks are taking a student body president election too seriously. Its a satire. That's the plot, sure, they could treat it as a normal HS would, but then you wouldn't have a show. People just like to complain. Same with their age, first of all, that's par for the course, and again, given its a satire about people treating a HS election like a real one, of course the characters have to seem older than they do. Plus they do that time jump in the last ep to bring them more in line with their actual ages.
But yeah, hopefully this gets a 2nd season because it should be pretty good.
