TV commentary:

The Magicians- Woah, shocker of a season finale! You messed up Alice! And screw you Dean Fogg, and screw the Library! But before we get into the main plot, let's go into the Fillory subplot.

So with the gang reunited for the quest, Fen is acting High King. She gets alerted to an issue from the Fairy Queen, that someone is attacking fairies. It turns out its Irene Mcallister and the Librarian Traveller guy. So Fen goes undercover and leads them to a trap and she has her men arrest them. But! Because FQ is feeling ultra guilty about breaking that deal a couple of eps a few eps ago, she offers a new deal to them. She will sacrifice herself to be turned into Fairy coke, as her royal marrow is way more potent then any random fairy they find. However, if they accept, no one anywhere can ever hunt a fairy again, and the deal is iron clad and impossible to break. (Wait, does that mean people will be physically unable to attack a fairy? Good in theory, but that might be a problem later)

Irene gladly accepts, but Fen is horrified. Despite their issues, she doesn't want FQ to sacrifice herself. But FQ will not be dissuaded, she's doing this for her people. And so she's strapped to the table, and taunts Irene, one last insult before Irene kills her. Anyways, it seems like a nice enough gesture, the fairies are now safe. Too bad this randomly ends up biting the gang in the ass.

Also, for restoring the forest, Julia is now a full fledged goddess, and a fellow goddess shows up and tells her she's ascending, and these mortal issues are no longer any concern. The others can finish the quest without her. And so Julia takes her leave, but not before giving Q a little bit of magic to use in case of emergency. So Julia is up.. in the higher planes? It looks like a forest, and she's learning goddess 101. But as expected, things do not go well for the gang and she has to go back and save their asses.

So yeah, with all the keys, they get the full story in the book, about a girl using the keys to try and rescue her father, who's locked away in a castle. The story has inconsistencies though, which they think is a clue, and after much sleuthing, they seek out an architect Callie, who is really the goddess Calypso in disguise.

She tells them how she was commissioned by the other gods to build the perfect prison to lock away their mistakes. Prometheus wanted to also hide the backdoor to magic in there as well. Which, given the prison is Castle Blackspire, the mirror image to Whitespire (or rather, Whitespire is its mirror image, as Blackspire was first) it makes sense that the Wellspring was in Fillory. Callie says Umber had taken the world Blackspire was on and turned it inside out to build something for his amusement. And since Fillory is not a round planet, its on the other side of the giant mass Fillory resides on, underneath it.

But I digress, Callie would only agree to this commission if the place was populated with the best Guardians. And so Prometheus came up with the quest of the seven keys, with the character at the center of the story Ora being the first Guardian and her father offering himself up as "the bait". To make the keys though, Prometheus imbued them with his god-power, draining him and making him mortal, allowing him to be killed by his enemies.

Given its reputation as an impenetrable prison, the gang wonders how they will get in, but Q solves that rather easily- he uses the magic Julia gave him to incept Ora and get her to let them in the back door, in exchange for him taking her place as Guardian. Needless to say, the rest of the gang, especially Alice and Eliot are not thrilled with this plan.

Speaking of Alice, she's still secretly working against them, even getting a potion of forgetfulness from Dean Fogg so she can forget all about her upcoming betrayal. You know what would be a better way of easing your conscience? Not betraying your friends.

But yeah, the gang gets into the castle, only what follows is a series of screw ups known and unknown to them. Firstly, Eliot cannot accept Q becoming the new Guardian. And so when the big monster shows up (some creepy seeming dude, who Ora says slaughtered all the other prisoners) asking to play, Eliot shoots him with the god killing bullet. Only its obvious to the audience the monster isn't that guy, its a yellow mist possessing him. Ora is shocked and fearful, and quickly gets possessed and runs off. Not that Eliot and Q understand what just happened, because a whole lot of shit is happening at once. Hey Ora, maybe instead of being all, "OMG, what did you do?" because you know what they did, Eliot pulled out a gun and shot that guy, maybe warn them about how they're in danger because the monster can jump bodies?

Quelliot are too busy having to deal with Alice, who snorts the last of the Fairy Coke she had to subdue the other and melt down the keys- she thinks magic is too dangerous to come back, and since Quentin won't let the library control it, she'll just stop them from completing the quest. She melts down the keys, runs off, and runs into possessed-Ora. Only when she runs back, she can't warn the gang, because Julia has shown up to fix things.

Her fellow goddess Iris said to ignore this, but she knows Q is so desperate to save magic he won't stop trying to complete the quest, even if its impossible and he'll die unfulfilled. So she subdues Alice so she won't stop her, but unfortunately between that, and the gang being pretty pissed at her for the betrayal, they don't heed her warnings about Ora. Anyways, Julia pulls a Prometheus and gives up her god-power to recreate the keys, which the gang uses to re-open the magic flow.

Too bad Library traveler guy shows up, Irene and Fogg in tow. Irene is powered up from FQ fairy coke, so she easily subdues the now powerless Julia and the others. They put the siphon on the magic back door and the library now has control of magic!

Irene tries to kill them, but Fogg stops them, saying they had a deal. So instead, they take Alice prisoner and use the potion to wipe the others memories and place them back in the real world. Margo is some sort of rich businesswoman named Janet (in a throwback to the books), Josh is an uber driver, Julia is an architect, Penny23 is a DJ, Kady is a drug dealer, and Q is back to being his nerdy self, but one unaware of magic being real. Its a little annoying the Julia was a goddess and Margo was High King, and that was quickly undone due to all these shenanigans.

But yeah, the Library is doling out magic on a limited basis, and functions like a ridiculous bureaucracy, with Dean Fogg having to file all sorts of forms and wait on decisions to get more magic rations for Brakebills. He goes to see the imprisoned Alice who tries to warn him that the monster got out, and the others are in danger, because since they're the first people he saw, he'll probably go after them first.

And indeed, you'll notice I didn't mention Eliot up there, because he's been possessed by the Monster! He finds Q and basically asks to play with him. Q is understandably creeped out, but he can't get away, and possessed Eliot say he has such great plans, and things are better with a friend. And that is where we end. It'll definitely be interesting to see how next season goes. I hate memory wipes, so I hope they remember again quickly next season!
