The Magicians- Amusing ep! The previouslies played out as Josh giving Penny-23 the down low on timeline 40 was a nice touch. But let's start with Fillory. So the gang finds Frey as a random bartender in an animal bar and a bear bf. While Margo is getting to know the bear (this ends up being important), Frey lets the rest of them know she never saw any fairy kids in fairyland.
So they quickly figure out the fairies can't have children in the fairy realm, which is why they were planting them in Fillory. So they try to make a deal with FQ, she gives them the key, which will cause the Fairy Realm to collapse, but they were only in there to protect themselves from humans anyways. The gang promises them safety in Fillory, with the added bonus of the Fairies being able to procreate again. But FQ says they're not exactly in charge, Tick is, so they can't make that promise.
And so they try to get her help, but she's all, she could just wait for the political infighting/warring with the Lorians and Floaters to just take them all down and she could move in after. But if they can get control before then, she'll make the deal.
Since they had floated the idea of elections way back when before all the chaos, they force the issue. They print up a bunch of "vote for the children of Earth!" posters printed up and drop them all over. Now, there actually isn't an election, but the people think they are. Tick could say this is all fake, but he would look like the bad guy, so he has to run with it.
Eliot is put forth as their candidate, much to Margo's chagrin. He tries to be all, its a patriarchal society, they'll only vote for a man, so she voices her outage, but ultimately lets Eliot take lead. They have Julia use her burgeoning goddess powers to fix the sentient forest she burned down, and perform other miracles to help their cause.
The problem is Tick does have some good ideas, as he really does care for the people- let's not forget, he betrayed them because he felt their shenanigans were destroying the country. Eventually, Tick reports the transcript from the trial, where Eliot calls Fillorians a bunch of backwards idiots.
But its not the death knell for their campaign- the votes are tallied, and the winner is... Margo!! Turns out, there's only around fifty thousand humans in Fillory, but over a million talking animals. And so Margo go put in as a write in by the animals for supporting Beastality! Heh, I mean, it was more, she was cool with Frey and her bear boyfriend, who is apparently very influential among the talking animals. It was more, if she approves of human/talking animal relationships, the animals see that as her seeing them as equals. As such, it was enough for her to win in a landslide!
They take Tick back in to the council, under constant watch of course, because they don't trust him. But again, he has good ideas for Fillory, and they recognize his usefulness. But yeah, they let the fairies settle in Northern Fillory, and so FQ gives her the key. And, she also gives Margo another eye, a fairy one that allows her to see all sorts of things. Now, it might end up having unfortunate consequences, but this really does seem like a true reward for her help, and not one of those gifts that come with a bad price sort of things. Hilariously, Fen complains about getting replacement toes.
Back on Earth, they have Alice talk to the Library to figure out what's in the castle at the end of the world. But since they don't trust her, they have Penny-23 follow her, and sure enough, while she gets useful info from Zelda (ask a god), they also learn Zelda gives her a siphon to use when magic is restored to allow the library to horde it and therefore dole it out to whoever THEY decide is fit. It will require taking Julia's magic, which could kill her, but Zelda is all greater good. Alice at least is not keen on that idea.
So Penny-23 reports that to the gang, who confront Alice and she and Q have a philosophical argument over whether magic should be free or should someone smart handle distributing it in a safe and trusted manner. She also brings up the fact that if they just release magic out there, Q's dad's cancer will come back. So in the end, Q goes to his dad and tells him everything, including his other life, with the son named after him. His father believes his story, after all, he's the one who read his son the stories of Fillory, and when his cancer went into remission he could sense something was different with the world, missing. Anyways, Q tells his dad, he's gone through so much on this quest, so he's not asking for his dad's permission to bring back magic even if it will kill him, but asking him if he's cool with it. And his father tells him he has to do this.
But yeah, Julia tries to find a god to talk to- the Lady of the Underground is not answering her, that one hedonist god they met earlier in the season, his insta was suspended for terms of service violations, so Penny-23 floats the idea of Reynard after hearing about him from Kady. Now, I'm totally starting to get a lot of red flags from Penny-23! Like people brought up the fact that Dean Fogg said Alice-23 was the only survivor of their friend group. But what about Penny? Was it a continuity error? Or is he as some people suspect, not who he says he is.
I mean, he sees Alice-23 on the boat, but at no point do they indicate they knew each other. Like no discussion of a shared experience! For all we know, she didn't even realize the others think he's Penny-23, while she thought he was some other Penny! But i digress, there was just something... manipulative in the way he got Kady to suggest the idea of having Julia find Reynard and asking him what's behind the door.
They find him, and he's a loser pizza delivery boy, and he tells them that the castle contains all of the gods' "mistakes". Then he tries to shoot Julia with the god killing bullet she and Kady made. Apparently, Hades gave it to him to shoot himself. But Julia is a god, and easily stops him, taking the bullet to use against whatever horror Beast-Q warned them might be released. She taunts Reynard with the fact that she has his spark, but is doing way more with it then he ever could, andf they leave him to wallow in his loserness.
And again, Penny-23 suspiciously says, they're just going to let him go after all he did to them? Its like, why do you want them to waste the god killing bullet on him? Given Reynard got the bullet from Hades, and Hades was also trying to make a deal with Penny a couple of eps ago, I wonder if Penny-23 is really Hades in disguise, or someone working for him, manipulating the others for his own agenda.
Which leads us to the most heartbreaking part of the ep, I guess to balance all the goodness of Margo finally winning, and Julia getting over Reynard. Kady picks up the 5th key, the one that linked them that one time, trying to contact Penny. She establishes the link, tells Penny she loves him and she'll figure out a way to get him back. Only, its not Penny-40 she's talking to, its Penny-23, which he breaks to her. So apparently for this quest, Penny-40 has been replaced by Penny-23, and Kady is crushed.
