The Magicians- Wild ep. Also, I'm not sure that works that way. So this weeks ep involves Julia and Josh venturing into the 23rd timeline (the one where the Alice they talked to in the Tesla Inflection was from). Anyways, at one point Dean Fogg finds out they're from the 40th timeline, and he laments having to live through another 17 more of these.
Which that doesn't sound right to me. I mean, they never went deep into the nature of these time loops Jane Chatwin was creating, but just from the description, I would've initially thought whenever she looped (which she seemed to do whenever Quentin died), that timeline would cease to exist. But then talked to Alice-23, implying that timeline continues on. Which, okay, that can work, though Dean Fogg's comments about having to live through more of these doesn't make sense.
Like, after Quentin-23 died, Jane would've looped, so if time goes on in timeline 23, then this Fogg is stuck where he is, Fogg-24 through 40 are different guys, basically, who should only retain memories up to when Jane ended a loop and started a new one. I guess he could've meant "he" in the general sense, like he didn't mean this specific consciousness of himself had to go through 17 more loops of crap. More that, there'd be a dozen and a half more of him being created and going through some shit.
But I digress, back to the beginning. So in the aftermath of the fairy massacre of the Mcallister estate, Julia tells Dean Fogg that Irene managed to escape (so I presume she'll show up to throw a monkey wrench at some point) but Julia re-warded Brakebills so Dean Fogg has the school back again. Heh, I'm not sure it works like that! I mean, he can re-open up the school, but they'd technically be squatting since the Mcallisters (well, Irene, since she's the last one standing) would still technically own the land or whatever!
Anyways, she sends a bunny to the gang in Fillory to tell them about the Fairy stuff that happened. Needless to say, since bunny messaging isn't very detailed, Margo is not pleased with Julia making nice with her or trusting her, so they need a face to face for more details. Only Tick has upped the guard patrols around the portal tree ever since Alice, Q, and Josh broke into the palace. So there's a wanted poster of Margo, Eliot, Quentin, and Alice floating around. And so they send Josh.
So Josh meets with Julia and she tells him about the fairies having a key, but its powering the fairy realm, so they can't give it away. Heh, Josh was all, "Dang, I was expecting there to be more to this!" But lucky for him, there is! The Js go through the clock to regroup with the others in Fillory to figure out their next move. But they end up in timeline 23, bumping into Marina-23 and Josh-23 in the remains of the Physical Kids' house of this timeline. Also, magic is gone there too but the Beast still has his magic, so he's slaughtering everyone with impunity.
Heh, Marina-23 and Josh-23 end up slipping Josh and Julia a mickey, and the Js wake up in chains, with Josh-23 and Marina-23 apologizing, but the Beast was looking for Julia, so they figure maybe if they give her up, he'll spare them. Julia says, how about we team up instead (particularly since the 23-timeline folks mention the Beast wearing a key around his neck that tells him the future, which none of the keys they have in timeline-40 do, so it must be a new one), and as a gesture of good faith, she shows them she still has magic and heals Marina's facial scar.
Which, can I say, I'm really glad to see Marina again. Between her and Alena on Arrow, I'm liking seeing Kacey Rohl on my TV. But yeah, she and Julia have a lot of discussions, on how they knew each other since Marina would've been gone by the time Julia was enrolled, but Julia reveals she never went to Brakebills. Josh-23 is all, "That's like Hermione never going to Hogwarts!"
I've always found that to be the most amusing but also sad part about timeline-40, was that to beat the beast, the factor that changed was Julia not going to Brakebills, because Josh put it so perfectly with the Hermione comment. Its funny, because Alice seems like the smart one, but if we're making HP parallels, I guess hse's really more of a less weird/more crazy version of Luna. I wonder who would be considered the smarter witch if it came down to it?
But I digress, Julia thinks they can defeat the beast with that Rynaman Ultra, so they just need to find it in this timeline, which Fogg-23 says is its prolly in the library. Which is being haunted by the ghosts of Margo and Eliot! Apparently Fogg sent them to find it. And in this timeline, the horrors Eliot has seen has turned him into a lush. So when they find the spell, Margo is all, they need to power up to use it. They need to cast a joint spell to do this, but have to be careful or it could blow them up.
Margo-23 tells this Eliot to get it together and do it. And maybe she shouldn't have had as much faith in him since he's an alky, because he ends up blowing off the side of her head. Which given Fogg implied the two students died trying to recover the spell in a grisly way, implies Eliot was so horrified by killing his best friend that he must've killed himself soon after.
But yeah, Julia and Marina managed to grab the spell, bumping into Penny-23 along the way. Who in this timeline is apparently lovers with Julia! He's elated to see her, but she lets him know that she's not his Julia. Anyways, while practicing the Rynaman Ultra, the beast attacks! He slaughters Josh-23, and is surprised when Julia is able to fight back. More surprising, the Beast isn't Martin Chatwin, its Q! Who, I'll have to say, evil monster is a really good look for him!
Anyways, Penny warps them out of their, back to the library, where the Js are all, "Um, you didn't say the Beast was Q!" and they find out about Alice resurrecting Q, so Julia has Penny take them to her. Now, if you recall, Alice-23 told them in the Tesla Inflection that the Beast "tore apart Quentin, even his shade!" So, what happened is pretty obvious- her encounter with Quentin-40 renewed her love of Quentin and she made a deal with a Fillorian creature to bring Quentin back to life! Unfortunately, since he was shadeless, that version of Q went nuts, and killed Umber for his power.
Now, that was something that initially confused me about this ep, magic being gone there. At first I thought maybe what they did in timeline-40 somehow caused the gods to turn off magic everywhere, even alternate timelines, but that doesn't make sense, that seems like that would create huge paradoxes. But yeah, I guess they're magicless in timeline-23 because Quentin-23 killed Umber, incurring the same punishment.
But I digress, he took over for the Beast (basically because the Beast already has this legend of scariness about him, so why not adopt the persona to scare potential enemies), and shared Martin's Fillory obsession. And so now that he was the only one with power, he slaughtered everyone who could be a threat to him. Which is prolly why he was seeking out Julia- the key probably sensed Julia-40, who possessed god-level magic, could stop him.
So yeah, with Julia there now, Alice shows them a dagger she got that could kill a god, but its so powerful she can't even touch it. Julia easily picks it up, and so they formulate a plan. Marina wants to use Alice as bait, since she sees all this as her fault. But Julia tells Marina 1) its really timeline-40 Julia and Quentin's fault for using the Tesla Inflection and accidentally inspiring Alice-23to try and bring back Q and 2) she used someone as bait against a god once, and it ended horribly- she tells Marina how she did that with Marina and feels horrible about it, and she'll never do that to someone again.
Anyways, she tells Marina she knows Quentin better than anyone, how no matter what timeline it is, they'll always be best friends- and she's going to use that to get him to let his guard down and take him down.
So they sneak into the Whitespire throne room, but Beast-Q can tell that they're there, hiding. So Alice ends up revealing herself rather than them all getting killed since he was about to indiscriminately set the entire room ablaze, and Quentin kills her. This gives Julia enough time to sneak up on him and not stab him, but give him her shade. And so he's wracked with guilt over of all the horror's he's committed.
Julia was all, is this what he foresaw, her standing over him, about to kill him. But actually, its not! For one thing, Quentin takes the blade and kills himself, but while he's dying, he tells Julia the vision he saw was of her using the last key to unlock a door to let magic back in, but letting out something much, much worse. Great! Can't these guys ever catch a break.
After he expires, she takes back her shade and the key. Back at the PK house, Julia is talking with Penny, who wants to go back with them. He understands she's not his Julia, but there's nothing for him in this world anymore. Meanwhile, Josh, who was playing with the key to try and figure out how to get back home, does find a door to open, which Marina runs through. Which cool, does that means she's back now?
But yeah, Penny-23 goes with them, which should make things interesting. Also, Penny-40 had no body to return to, but now here's a body that he can inhabit probably. What happens if he tries? Do they fight for control? Do they combine? It'll be interesting.
Other stuff, when the Joshs were talking earlier about how Josh-23 is kinda a dick for trying to betray them, Josh-23 is all, "I've seen some things!" and warns Josh about something called "the Quickening". If these are different timelines though, Josh might not even encounter this event! But I guess there's no reason to not warn him just in case.
Too bad he doesn't go into the details. Though given Josh is a pop culture nerd, and the cool trenchcoat Josh-23 wears, I'm surprised he doesn't immediately think Highlander. I mean, given the talk about killing magical creatures for magic (the Mcallisters and their magical coke, Fogg-23 mentions killing a Leprechaun for power), maybe there's some weird thing where mages will start killing each other for power, and Josh-23 accidentally decapitated someone and got their power, like the Quickening in Highlander.
