The Magicians- Crazy ep, lots of things happening. First off, let's start with Fillory since that's the quickest thing to mention- Margo and Eliot are on trial, being judged by a marsupial. All we see of that is Eliot making his case about despite how much Fillory has effed him and his friends over, he only has its best interests at heart and will do anything to protect and save it.
On Earth, Fen bonds with Alice (though she gets mad at Alice for comparing the loss of her child to Alice not being able to remember knowledge she gained as a Niffin, since Alice could always learn that knowledge again, while her daughter is just gone) and Julia. Julia invites Irene to the house, and lucky that Fen is there, because she sees that Irene is being followed around by a fairy. But unlike in Fillory, this fairy, Skye, is Irene's slave.
Fen and Skye set up a secret meet while Irene is away to figure out more about the other fae slaves and the mysterious "magic coke", only when they go to meet her, they find her on a table with her leg cut off. But yikes, as suspected, the magic dust does come from faeries, but it might be from grinding up their bones, as opposed to a secretion as Irene claimed.
Now onto the key quest. Penny finds Benedict, who claims the key was taken away from him when he entered the underworld, but we later find out he lied and buried it in the hopes of delaying the quest indefinitely and getting Penny to stay.
Anyways, before Penny finally figures that out, he thinks he has to sneak back into the Underworld Library branch. He does, and bumps into Sylvia, who knew where to find it because she read it. We find out the books about people are written by the oracle Cassandra, who looks a lot like Alice. Penny even calls her Alice, which, instead of thinking they just happen to look alike, is he assuming she somehow went back in time, got into trouble with a god, and because THE Cassandra from Greek Mythology? Heh, which to be fair, is entirely possible, but still, Occam's Razor, man!
Most of the ep is him standing idly by as he reads the pages Cassandra writes, which plays out as the other short stories mentioned in the title of this ep. Eventually, he goes back to a page he dismissed as meaningless and figures out Benedict lied. He gets the key, and sends it to the satellite branch. And then promptly gets betrayed by Sylvia, who turns him into the library.
Anyways, as for the others, the plan continues to have kinks, because once Victoria finds out how dangerous making this bridge to travel to the satellite library is, that it could kill her, she wants no part of it, unless Alice proves that it can be done with precise calculations. Problem is, Alice refuses, so Poppy has to steal her notebooks of calculations.
Meanwhile, after her talk with Fen, Alice contacts the library herself and just gets taken right in, where she tries to make a deal for access to the library's knowledge to try and piece together her lost Niffin knowledge, bumping into the gang later when they infiltrate. Heh, but I guess they're too busy trying to find the key and get out of there to really ask what she's doing there.
Which, to get there, Victoria has to maintain the bridge by constantly bleeding herself to power the sigils keeping the bridge open (as magic is gone, but she's a traveler so she, and thus her blood, is still inherently magical). Which Poppy confuses me because on the one hand, she's very self serving, since she abandons the quest when things start to go wrong, but on the way back, she actually tries to get Victoria to leave with her. Now, is she thinking of her best friend, or does she have a secret agenda that involves trying to screw them over, by like trapping them in the satellite library.
At the very least, Q does mange to get the key from Penny after he drops it off (having no idea Penny got captured) and get out of there with Kady.
Anyways, we also learn what Harriet's secret mission is. (BTW, her story sequence is pretty neat since its pretty much soundless because she's deaf) And more about her- turns out, she's Zelda's daughter!! And they had a falling out because Harriet believes knowledge shouldn't be locked up. Back in 2007, she gave her mom an ultimatum, she'll return to Library, if its opened up to everyone. Obviously, we know how that turned out.
But yeah, Harriet's looking for a battery, since it seems like the Library still has magicians able to do magic. They jump a librarian holding a mysterious case, in which they find vials and vials are faerie coke. Not that they know what it is. But they try to steal the case, wherein Harriet and Jade bump into Zelda. Zelda signs to her daughter that yeah, the battery is fake, they've been using the dust, and leaked a story of a battery to fool everyone else.
Harriet sends Kady to find the rest of the gang while she talks with her mom, where they argue again. Her mom threatens to stop her, but she doesn't. As she tries to escape through the mirror bridge (after Kady and Q have since gone through), the librarian she attacked shows up and shoves her into the bridge. Which, I'm not sure if this is significant, or this was an editing mistake, but she had the case as she was ready to go through. And when the librarian shoves her through the mirror, it seems like she's still holding onto the case. But when she's on the bridge, she doesn't have it. Did the librarian grab it before he pushed her through, and they did a poor job showing that? Did it fall off the bridge? Can the case not go through the bridge?
But I digress, in any case, she tells Victoria to run, and Zelda watches in horror as the librarian shatters the mirror in a rage. Which seems to shatter both mirror portals, and so Harriet and Victoria are trapped as the bridge collapses. Are they did? Will Victoria be able to jump them out? Did Harriet still have the case (or at least still powered from the dose she took earlier) and be able to magic them out of there?
It'll be interesting to see what happened to them. But ooh, next week is a musical ep, I can't wait!
