TV commentary:
Altered Carbon- Hmm, that's an interesting development that I'll confess I didn't actually pick up on. So the reason Ortega was so interested in Kovacs was not because she was the one originally on the Bancroft case, but because the sleeve was her ex-partner/lover. It is a little crazy how everything ended up being connected.
I dunno, I think the whole Ryker thing makes it not white-washing. In the Ghost in the Shell live action movie, I think the complaint had more merit. I mean, yes, Scarlett Johansson is just a cyborg body, so some people are all, "even though her named is Motoko, she just happened to be in a caucasian looking body!" But honestly, they could've just as easily hired an Asian actor to be the body to avoid the whole white-washing issue.
In this one though, its not, "lets have a character named Takeshi played by a white guy!" Joel Kinnerman is a white guy named Ryker, and another character named Takeshi happens to be in control of his body. I think its more complex here. I mean, I supposed they could've just changed it so Ortega's partner was also an Asian dude, but honestly, I think they were trying to highlight the fact that they've brought up, when sleeves are interchangeable, it could be anyone in there!
Like in the beginning, Kovacs was in a different Asian body when he got caught. So I feel Takeshi did favor bodies that were at least of his ethnicity. (although to be fair, I think if he's this crazy super special forces guy, one wouldn't be married to a certain race/gender and use whatever body blends in the best) The fact that he's now in this white dude highlights the fact that this isn't his choice.
Anyways, I'm halfway through the season, and hey Takeshi, you know what might've helped save Abboud and Ortega, telling the other police, the cop in there with them is a secret bad guy instead of just running up and down the stairs like a crazy person. Of course, you'd think the cops would be all, "Who's this crazy guy just randomly running up and down the stairs of our police station looking like he's wanting to start something?" Like maybe they'd want to question him, since he could be a criminal about to kill some people!
