TV commentary:
Altered Carbon- Only a couple of eps in so far. Some interesting concepts. Heh, maybe its the cynic in me, but it seems still rather easy to die. Like you're definitely harder to kill. Disease and aging are no longer concerns. As are plenty of accidents. But I would think you're susceptible to something that would totally destroy your body, like massive explosions, or being dumped into like acid or magma.
And it seems like there's plenty of ways for someone to kill you. Like not just direct attacks to the stack, but in the first ep they say an energy weapon to the head can also be lethal. Which makes it sound like the stack is vulnerable to massive energy bursts through the head or close to the stack. Or they could even just put your body down, and the coup de grace your stack.
Or they could even just simply kill you and hide your stack where no one will ever find it.
As for the philosophical, are they alive of it all, on the one hand, the stack as explained so far doesn't necessarily seem like a recording of your data, I can see it as ending up being a repository for your consciousness. So when you do spin up again, I think that could be you. Though it starts getting dice-y with some of the other concepts they introduced.
Like Bancroft making copies of himself- Ida know, I think those copies aren't necessarily him. Like his current incarnation doesn't remember anything from the last 48 hours of his previous death. So I think being spun up from a copy, that entity isn't you. Its something with your memories, personality and thought patterns and stuff, but the previous you ceases to exist if your old stack dies.
It gets even more dicey with the whole idea of double-sleeving. So if you copy yourself and have two copies of yourself active at the same time, I think one is "you" and the other is again, something that is like you, but a totally separate consciousness!
I'm kinda curious to see if they address those concepts in the show. Like for all you know, you could be spun up from backup, thinking your old self is dead, but they're running around still alive. I could be wrong, but I get the sneaking suspicion either Bancroft or Kovacs has another version of themselves running around. I guess we'll see!
I guess if I have any complaints, it seems like things are a little too sexualized. Like there's a bit of unnecessary nudity.
Heh, in the middle of the 3rd ep right now, and I find it baffling that Ortega is all, "Son of a bitch, Kovacs is here right now!" Like, how is that a surprise to her? Gee, the guy Bancroft has hired to investigate all aspects of his life to figure out who murdered him is at a party that Bancroft is throwing!
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend- Ooh, interesting! Time jump! I guess that was kinda necessary if they wanted Heather to give birth before the end of the season. But yeah, with the time jump, not only do we have that, we have a couple of other developments.
First off, Valencia has a girlfriend/business partner! Which, that's kinda disappointing we didn't get to see that journey.
But secondly, Sunil works at the firm! Only he and Paula are on the outs, because she's kinda mean to her co-workers, because she's always thought that how she's supposed to be. She was raised to be tough and not pull punches. Which wasn't a problem with people who were just "work friends". Or Rebecca, who isn't under her. But for a friend like Sunil, its an eye opener.
Luckily though, they talk it out and are back to being friends by the end.
Finally, Nate and the Bekster are still effing around, even though Nathaniel is dating someone else. Which, Rebecca says that's all she wants, screwing around, and Nathaniel is perfectly happy with letting Rebecca dictate the terms of their relationship, as long as it keeps her in his life. But actually seeing him with his real girlfriend, she comes to realize she does love him and wants to actually be with him.
And its a huge crisis for her, because on the one hand, its obvious they both want to be together, but on the other, she realizes she has issues. She's scared he'll do something perfectly harmless, she'll flip out and be on the dark path again. Which, her therapist tells her, it is a legitimate concern, but the fact that she's aware that it could be a problem is a good thing. And if she just takes it slow and continues to be aware of the dangers, she totally could have a relationship with Nathaniel.
Unfortunately, she's too scared to do it just yet.
Agents of SHIELD- Finally! The gang is back in the present. Well, you can't be sure everyone made it, but the previews make it clear they have. I'm glad they didn't drag out Mack thinking Yo-yo was dead. Like for a second there, with the looming deadline of the portal opening, I thought he wouldn't find out she's fine until another episode. But thankfully, she shows up right after he kills Kasius.
Interesting though, so Coulson ices Daisy in order to drag her back to the present since she was going to stay as she thinks she cracked the planet. And unfortunately, the ep ends right as they go through the portal, so wonder how long it will take Elena to tell them that other her said the cause of this disaster is trying to save Coulson.
