TV commentary:

ODAAT- Pretty great second season so far! This show is really good at alternating between comedy and dramatic moments, tackling all sorts of important issues with aplomb. I mean, obviously you have all the LGBTQA stuff with Elena, and its cool and interesting that not only did they give her a girlfriend, they're non-binary. And the show addresses that stuff well.

But then you have the different cultural issues. Like colorism, and how she'll prolly have a different experience in regards to racism because she's whiter and can prolly pass. Or Elena wanting her grandma to become a citizen because she's rightfully scared at this day and age, that even though Lydia has a green card and is a legal resident, this government might decide to deport her and all other non-citizens. And Lydia is hesitant, because she is still a proud Cuban. And it may be a pipe dream, but she thought maybe she could still return to Cuba if things ever got back to the way they were before the communists- she talks about her father even made sure she had the deed to the house so they'd have a place to live.

Or the gun control issue- Lydia apparently had Berto's gun in the house this whole time! And Penelope is pretty upset, because guns can be dangerous, she worries about the kids finding it and having an accident. Or worse- and again its a testament to the show that she can just say, "we have a gay teenager in this house!" and you know exactly what she's worried about. Plus, Penelope herself has PTS and is on anti-depressants. (Which makes the later reveal interesting)

But yeah, she lectures about her mom how people talk about how they have the gun locked up, they know proper safety so it will be fine, but accidents can still happen. But I liked Lydia's reasoning for having a gun, because its not something you ever see- she fled Cuba because of the communist takeover, so she and Berto believed in having a gun to protect themselves. Which, its funny, because it sounds like the same reasoning as those crazy militias ("We need to protect ourselves from someone trying to take over!"), but Lydia and Berto lived through that. In the end, Lydia acquiesces to getting rid of it.

But after all that, Alex reveals he knows Penelope has a secret gun in the house, and she ends up trying to be all "I was in the military, I know how to handle guns!" and she realizes she's giving the same excuses she just got onto her mother about. And like I said earlier, she claimed one of the dangers was herself and her mental issues, but she has her own gun! The ep ends with her saying she'll get rid of that gun too. But Ida know, we don't see her actually get rid of the guns, so can we be sure she followed through?

Interesting though, is this show a few months behind? Because Elena had her Quinceanara 1st season. And this season they don't mention Trump by name, but they reference him being president. But, we get a flashback to Elena's birth, and she was born a month before 9/11. Which inspired her parents to re-enlist. So her Quinceanara would've been 8/7/2016. And then the ep where they found out Alex had been secretly seeing his dad (but it was to try and mend fences between him and Elena), they say its been at least a year? So I guess its around mid 2017?
