TV commentary:
The Americans- Heh, talk about delusional! Its kinda funny that Elizabeth thinks her kids will be fine if they move them to Russia. I mean, Henry is about to go to that new school with a girl he likes and most likely likes him back (because that's really freaking weird to help him prepare a meal that she herself is not going to eat!), and with Pastor Tim leaving, Paige is finally able to sleep for the first time in forever. If they just drag them back to Russia, Paige and Henry will hate them forever!
Its hilarious, because the parallels are right in front of them with Pasha and his family. Paige and Henry's situation will be Pasha's. Even more funny is to hear Elizabeth telling Evgheniya what to do, not realizing if they do go back, she'll be the Alexei in that situation! I mean, they even ask Pastor Tim for advice, if Paige and Henry will adjust, and its hilarious how immediately uncomfortable he looks. He tries to be neutral all, "Well, it will be CHALLENGING, far be it from me to keep them from a CHALLENGE that might help them grow!"
Like he tries to break down the pros and cons, but the salient point is that he thinks its effin terrible. He doesn't ever say, "Oh, they'll love it! They'll thrive!" he freaking starts talking his spiritual crap, framing it in such a way that being dragged there will be a challenge they have to overcome.
It will be interesting to see where this goes, because honestly, the Jennings are fucked. I don't see any hope, any happy ending for them. Eventually, their luck will run out, and they'll get caught. But they can't leave, because they will lose their children.
Which, interesting, Elizabeth accidentally reveals to Tuan she has kids. Which, it doesn't seem like a big deal, but it might be, because Tuan is a g-d psychopath. For all his talk about how this is a mission, its clear he's latched on to them as his real parents, so who knows what he's thinking about having actual competition.
But holy cow, the kid is freaking cold as shit. So, he goes off book and runs with his own plan to move forward with the operation- he convinces Pasha to attempt suicide. Its kinda funny to see Philip and Elizabeth just standing there, mouths agape in shock as Tuan relays his plan. Like he showed Pasha how to "do it right" so he doesn't actually kill himself.
Philip is all, what if he messes up. But Tuan breaks it down, if he doesn't die, its still a big enough event that his dad may finally relent and go back to Russia. And if he does, the mom (sorry, her name is just too freaking long!) will leave the father and go back to Russia. And the nonchalance with which he explains this has the Jennings incredulous.
Its interesting, because even though the family thing is a cover, at the same time, they are kinda a family. Philip and Elizabeth try to get Tuan to call it off, as if they were his actual parents. But Tuan isn't their son, he's another operative, and he tells them this is their best plan, and how they're going to blow the operation. Eventually, Philip storms off to check on Pasha, Elizabeth and Tuan in tow trying to get him to relent because it could blow their cover.
Which it looks like it will get a lot of attention, because the family does have feds sitting on them. So when that ambulance rolls up for Pasha, that's a lot of scrutiny that will be on them.
But yeah, you know who's also incredulous? Stan and Aderholt! Sofia friggin brings her new boyfriend to the secret meeting, who goes on to try and extort money all, "Hmm, Sofia is doing a lot for you guys, and she's only getting $500! Surely $700 would be more appropriate compensation!" Honestly, I think Stan and Aderholt were so shocked with disbelief they didn't know what to do.
Its funny, because they're talking about it in the secret room later, and the guy's whirlwind romance with Sofia is so friggin text book KGB recruitment, I think they're thinking it might actually be legit! Because who comes at them so amateurishly?!
Back in Russia, Oleg gets grilled some more about his time in America, if he knew anything about Tatiana's operation. After all, its pretty damning, Tatiana's op, Stan, the previous Nina stuff, Oleg's connection to all of them. Though he does bring up the point, since Stan is counterintelligence, he would've been involved in any operation busting a Russian spy, so that's not really evidence.
But yeah, Oleg's investigation hits a snag. He wants them to go easy on that one lady, because she's small potatoes, and doesn't deserve a big prison sentence. He complains, and apparently the prosecutor agrees to not pursue charges against her. Which for some reason they credit to Oleg, but the fact that some higher up tells Oleg's boss to not arrest the person they think is above this lady makes me think that its just part of the coverup.
He does get to bond with his dad complaining about the corruption in the government. At first, his dad thinks those guys checking his room a few eps ago had to do with that, someone higher up involved trying to threaten him. And he vows he would use his own power to crush anyone messing with his son like that. But since Oleg actually did commit treason, he tells his dad not to do anything, he doesn't want his dad dragged down with him.
And hey, Misha gets to meet Philip's brother, whom the family is apparently not allowed to to ask about.
Other stuff, heh, I was kinda amused that Paige, who had enough of religion because all this crap ruined it for her, so she tosses her cross. And then Elizabeth fishes out of the garbage- you think at first she's trying to be all, "No, don't throw away your beliefs!" but nope, its, "You need to still wear this to keep up appearances until Pastor Tim leaves!"
Also, looks like Paige has a lot of aggression to get out, the way she goes at the make shift heavy bag in the garage.
