12 Monkeys- 12 Monkeys, I have underestimated you! So that's how there's one more season. I'll admit, that's a pretty cool turn of events. While they don't overtly say it, I guess that's why Jones doesn't kill Cassie and Cole earlier in their timeline, because she needs them and Jennifer to save Hannah.
But yeah, we find out what turns Athan into the witness- he meets a woman he loves, Eliza, but is unable to save her. Like the first time she dies, she's killed by a crime boss whom she pissed off. So Athan rescues her and kills the guy, easy peasy. Only, after telling her the truth and her accepting him, as long as he no longer effs with time, she dies of an embolism.
Turns out when she first tickled his fancy, he saves her from a staph infection with modern medicine, which unfortunately results in a long term complication that causes thrombosis. He attempts 607 times to save her, but it seems like fate. Heh, then he goes to see past Cassie, right after she lost her first patient.
She's distraught and tells the time is the enemy, no matter what they do, time is always fighting them. Which apparently inspires him to go on his quest to build the Army of the 12 Monkeys and Titan and destroy time!
Only, that's all a lie! Athan ISN't the Witness, and future Olivia was pulling a long con on everyone, even her past self. While the circumstances the gang has been through, Athan's birth, all that had to happen to put Olivia on the path to become the true Witness.
Like honestly, she thought she was just performing a coup, taking over where Athan failed. But as Athan discovered, and breaks to her, she was the boss all along!
So how do we get to that point? Olivia starts to whisper in Jones ear, outing Jennifer for protecting Cole and Cassandra. And so she's able to replace Jennifer as Jones' advisor. Jennifer starts to go mad, and Deacon feels sorry for her. We get some insight to him. He's upset about many things- Cassandra betraying him, not being in any of the prophecies, but most of all, the attempted redemption of Athan. I think Deacon is bringing in his own self-hatred into this. Because if Athan can be redeemed, that means anyone, including himself, can be redeemed, and I think he's struggling with that.
He ends up asking Jennifer where she wants to go- and she says home, back to the "present". And so they splinter her back there, only she winks at Deacon as she leaves. Her whole suicide attempt was just a ruse to go back, because unbeknown to anyone, even the audience at the time, she and Athan cooked up a plan.
That mausoleum she'd been seeing (which was Eliza's), where the dying man appears, those were instructions. Olivia is able to lead Jones and co to Cole, Cassie, and Athan- at the house of Cedar in Pine, December 26, 1959, the day after Cole undid his and Cassie's life.
Only its trap, and Titan shows up for Athan also. Jones ends up shooting Athan (despite Cassie's threat to shoot Hannah, which she doesn't follow through on), seemingly killing him. But he jumps back to the mausoleum, where Jennifer is waiting to save him and nurse him back to health and fix the damaged vest.
So while that's happening, Mallick captures Cassie, Cole, and Jones. Turns out setting Cassie free was part of his and Olivia's plan to take over from the Witness. They each had a part to play. Jones and her machine made this all possible and moved the pieces in place. When Olivia set Ramse and Cole against each other by telling Ramse to kill past Cassie, and Cole shot his blood brother, she knew he was ruthless enough to get past the Guardians. And Cassie would never give up on her child, and was the one who could find Athan.
So as I said, she thought she was committing a coup. Right at her victory though, Athan shows up to rescue them. He ends up sacrificing himself so they can escape. Before Olivia kills him, he taunts her that she's alone, and that the gang will defeat her.
And it seems Jennifer is the key to that. He needs her to be the one to guide that fractured family and defeat Olivia.
It'll be definitely interesting to see how all this plays out and ends!
