TV commentary:

The Magicians- Wow, a lot of big things happen this ep. Where to start? Let's go with Julia and Kady and the whole Reynard situation. So after dropping off Alice's shade to get all that sorted out (more on that later), she heads back to Brakebills, and makes up with Kady.

Kady tells Julia Gaines is seeking sanctuary in Brakebills, and how he discovered his dad is like majorly obsessed with the Lady of the Grounds, which is why he does what he does. Lucky for them, Julia just found out the Lady is Persephone. They decide to cook up a plan- they have no idea how to find Persephone, so they'll just fake an appearance by her, and teach Gaines magic so he can take down his dad.

Unfortunately, Gaines goes back to see Reynard to keep up appearances. And Reynard knows he went to the girls. And so he presents his wife's ear, and tells him how he literally tore her apart. That kinda freaks Gaines out, and its all too much for him to handle. Like he's not progressing very far magic wise, so he decides to do something crazy.

He whammies Julia to get some pizza. And lest you think he's doing something sinister to betray them, he's not. He powers through Kady's wards to mind control her too, and he sent Julia away because she would never agree to what he wants to do. And what he makes Kady do is sacrifice him for the power they need to kill Reynard.

Conveniently, Penny shows up with the book on god-killing magic (again, more on that later), and it gives Julia instructions on how to enchant metal to pierce gods. So she makes a god-killing bullet, but only has enough power from Gaines for one. But they set their trap, and she's about to shoot Reynard when Persephone shows up.

Why? To beg for Reynard's life! Turns out Reynard is her son. Now, I don't think it was only to save Reynard, as she hints there are "consequences" to killing a god. That and Julia angrily tells Persephone about how her son raped her and turned her into a monster, because the only thing preventing her from breaking down in tears right then and there was the fact that she lost her shade.

Persephone is all, don't let him take your mercy too, and how Julia is a survivor and she'll get through this. So in the end, Julia doesn't kill him, and leaves him for Persephone to discipline. Needless to say, Kady's pissed, especially since she killed a dude to get that bullet. But, Persephone rewards Julia by giving her back her shade.

Penny and Sylvia rather easily get into the Poison room. Sylvia says there's a back way, they just need to find the right fountain. She thinks it would take weeks, but Penny is all, "I'm a Traveller!" and it only takes a few hours. The fountain is locked, but Sylvia is all, "I got this!" and rather easily opens it.

Anyways, Sylvia wanted to find her book, because she discovered a lot of people's book's last 20 pages are just blank, which seems to point to some major cataclysm. She wanted to read her own book in the hopes of maybe figuring out what happened. But, Librarians are forbidden from doing that because the order believes if they read their book, their fate is sealed. But Sylvia quotes Sarah Conner all there is no fate but what we make it.

Though the way it turns out doesn't make sense. So, the poison room, is of course, poisoned. Penny manages to find the god killing magic book, and goes to retrieve Sylvia, who's found her book and read it. They have to get out of there before they succumb to the poison, but Sylvia collapses and says Penny has to leave her, because that's how she dies, according to her book.

Penny is all, "I thought you said there is no fate!" and she's all, "You have to leave me, or you will die!" Which is a statement that kinda breaks what they just set up. Like the way it should go is, she knows in her book Penny lives because he ends up having to leave her for the reasons she gave him. But what she actually said is if you don't leave me, you'll die. That implies choice, if he stays he dies, if he doesn't, he lives. But she has no idea what would happen if he decided to try and save her.

Presumably, this mysterious "last 20 pages missing" thing is a plot thread for next season.

So yeah, Alice is alive again- they get Mayakovsky to help using that battery he was building. Interesting though Q basically painted a path blaming him for all this. Mayakovsky slept with that student, which made her have a breakdown, which Alice's brother tried to fix but got turned into a Niffin, and Alice went to Brakebills to figure out what happened to her brother, and long story short, now she's a Niffin.

So he helps, and they bring Alice back. She's kinda mad at Quentin for bringing her back though, but hey, at least she's alive.

Anyways, he and Eliot spend the rest of their time trying to figure out the whole Fillory situation. Which at first I thought maybe Eliot being banished was actually trickery from Josh to usurp the throne, and he was a secret bad guy. But nope, it wasn't Josh's plan at all, though he did step into the role and tried to be all, "Hakuna Matata!" and get high and screw around. He thought things would work themselves out. They don't.

Ess attacks, and Josh and sloth guy and Pickwick manage to escape. But Josh had gotten a warning from Margo earlier to find a way to get her and Fen out of the Fairy Realm. She implored him to speak to Sloth guy, who also gave him the same potion as Margo. Josh is all, "Well, if I take this potion, I'll just be in the same position she is!" But with the castle besieged with enemies, and him seeing fairies dragging Fen off, he has no choice but to drink the potion and figure things out from there.

But yeah, in the real world, Q and Eliot figure out they could use the clock from the books to get back into Fillory. They trace it to a collector, who ends up being Umber in disguise. Turns out Ember and Umber are supposed to balance themselves out, but with Umber hiding in Vancouver, Fillory is in chaos, because that's what Ember likes.

Turns out he banished Eliot because he was actually figuring out how to fix things. Which Ember can't have. They eventually manage to convince Umber to give them the clock, but not to help them reign in his brother.

Heh, in the end, Eliot and Q try to think of what to do, and Eliot's plan is to take over. But Q is all, "Wait, isn't that exactly what the Beast wanted to do?!" and they're all like, well, crap. But looks like they have no other choice.
