Riverdale- Heh, this show is bonkers! Like I swear they decided to cram every plot line from every teen show in the past decade into the pilot, from PLL's murder mystery and creepy student-teacher relationships to Gossip Girl's conflict between two Queen Bee types, to Glee's jock having to choose between music and football. To be fair, it kinda works, though there are some unfortunate choices they make which I think will hurt it.
Like you don't get to skeeved out about Archie and Ms Grundy at first, because Archie doesn't look like the sophmore he's supposed to be. And technically, that relationship started before he was even a sophomore!
Also, the queer baiting with Beronica. Like they feature their kiss heavily in the promos, and its basically an attempt by Veronica to help get her and Betty on the cheerleader team. Even Cheryl says such a blatant attempt at titillation is old news. And they said in interviews that the two of them are just friends. And that's what's frustrating, because Betty and Veronica's burgeoning friendship is one of the best things about the pilot. Veronica is awesome to Betty. Helps her get out of her shell and basically verbally beats down Cheryl in defense of Betty, tries to get her with Archie. And she's more aware than Archie that when Cheryl forces them into seven minutes in Heaven and Betty takes off, that it would prolly not wise to look for her together, because the last thing Betty wants to see is them together.
Its a nice relationship, and people totally would feel comfortable shipping it. But the random kiss thing that was purely to make the promos more provocative mars that. Because we know the show was trying to bait us.
I will say though, I was going to say, "Eff Archie, Betty is a great girl, he's effin dense to not see what's right in front of him!" But him admitting he doesn't want to be with her because he doesn't think he's good enough for her changed my mind. Of course, he's also effing a teacher, so its not self-deprecation, he really isn't good enough for her.
Also, what's up with Cheryl and Jason? Like the opening scene was quite incestuous. Like who goes on weird romantic seeming rowboat rides with their siblings? And then in her speech at the assembly, she calls Jason her soulmate? That's kinda weird, lady!
I'm amused they added Josie and the Pussycats to this. I like that they're WoCs. I think Josie was a little harsh to Archie though. Its like he's really wanting to get into music and she just shoots him down without hearing him out!
And what's up with Veronica's mom being named Hermione? Like she's too old to have been named that by parents who were Harry Potter fans, which means her parents decided to name her that on their own. That's totally random!
