Bunheads- You know, when I said the Fanny/Michelle dynamic was totally reminiscent of Emily/Lorelai, I forgot that while that was fun at times, it was incredibly frustrating at others because Emily and Lorelai can be incredibly stubborn and passive aggressive. Also, now that I've seen Michelle and Sasha interact more, I am starting to see the similarities between Sasha and Rory. Its just that Sasha is kinda... meaner at times? At the very least way more broody. Like Rory was a little broody at times during the show's run. But most of the time, she was a Disney princess. Though Sasha, with her big blue eyes could look like a Disney princess, but one that would totally cut your throat while smiling that wide smile of hers if you crossed her.
Although speaking of, since Sasha played Sandee in the Gilmore Girls revival on netflix, I just want to comment on the whole Sandee Says situation. Yes, Rory was a bit insufferable at times in AYitL, but I disagree with the criticism by some viewers that Rory was acting like an entitled brat when it turns out Sandee was just offering Rory an interview not an actual position. To be fair, Sandee's hardcore chasing of Rory for the website did seem like Rory had a job if she wanted it.
But I digress, just finished up the mid-season finale of the show. It was unfortunate things were starting to go well, Michelle and Fanny were really coming together. But then Michelle accidentally maced the student at the Nutcracker, and that one mistake undid the strides they had been making. Well, two mistakes, with Michelle talking to Michael about his and Fanny's relationship causing Michael to take off. Though that should be more on Michael than Michelle. I mean, I get Fanny and Michael had their groove, but Fanny just settling and saying nothing because she doesn't want to scare him off doesn't seem like the equation for a good relationship.
It was interesting to see Michelle have her Hubbell dream at the hospital, because some compelling things were brought up. Like had he not died, would Michelle have become a teacher at the dance school? I mean, she and Fanny were getting along at the end of the pilot before Hubbell died, but Michelle was still an outsider in the town and people were still wary of her, so who knows what kinda issues would've sprung up? It was interesting to see her version of Hubbell say maybe Fanny would've preferred a daughter, since she would've been able to share all the dance stuff with her. Because that was her version of Hubbell, so the answer was born of her subconscious, not what Hubbell would really would say.
Only, when Michelle finally sees her wedding video in the winter premier ep, and what Hubbell said about her, he did say he was confident his mom would eventually like her more than him. And though I said before, the arguments on this show and GG could be incredibly frustrating because often they're conflicts that spiral out of control because of the stubbornness and passive-aggressiveness of the people involved, the resolutions more than make up for it.
Like it was sweet of Fanny to show up in Nevada to tell Michelle she was ridiculous to run away, particularly living a shitty life when she has a home and a family waiting for her. Michelle tries to be all self-deprecating all, they shouldn't want her, but Fanny is adamant. But then Michelle sees the aforementioned video, realized how much Hubbell adored her. I loathe to say love, because again truthfully, he was just some guy who was kinda obsessed with her and roped her in after she had a particularly bad day. So while he did have some really good insights into her, he didn't really know her, and how could you really love someone you don't really know? But ignore my cynicism. What he says makes her realize she does have a family back in Paradise with Fanny and the girls.
Also sweet was when she came back and Sasha had snuck into her place to find a place to crash since she'd been hiding out from her parents and had been secretly been staying with the other girls. Sasha spots her and immediately hugs her and Michelle was all, "Hey, kid!" and that was the first moment they really felt like Rory and Lorelai.
But yeah, it was also cute at the end of the ep when Fanny showed Michelle her new choreographed routine that was done to the music of that auto-tuned video of Boo that went viral about the night of the macing.
