TV commentary:

TVD- So we finally find out Matt's dad's deal. So Matt and his dad are descendants of the Maxwell family. They were tradesmen, and the way Peter tells it, the Maxwells were the one who grew the town with their tradecraft. But then the rich founding families used their influence to take over the town and stealing their legacy. And as such the Maxwells fell from grace and became the losers they are today.

But before that happened, one of the Maxwell ancestors was friends with Sybil and Seline. Which was unfortunate for those 100 witches who were slaughtered way back when. We learn the truth of their burning. It wasn't just good old fashioned fear. Turns out they had commissioned Maxwell to make a bell, which presumably was a weapon for use against the sirens. I'm a little unclear by Sybil's accounting- I guess they learned about the construction from him and thus influenced the townspeople to burn the witches at the stake? I mean, since he still built the bell, I assume he wasn't totally working with the siren sisters, otherwise he would just've betrayed the witches without making the bell. So I'm thinking he was doing a normal commission and let it slip to the sisters, who then took care of the witches.

In any case, Dorian (who Alaric told everything about and knows Seline killed Georgie) figures out that it goes with the tuning fork as an amplifier, so it could be a powerful weapon against the sisters. Which is prolly why Sybil is looking for it. She apparently survived Damon killing her and became a teacher at MF high, mind controlling a history class and holding them hostage to try and force Caroline to find the bell. Turns out way back when, a young Peter was kinda pissed at the Founder's day parade given what the founders did to his family and tossed the bell of a bridge. (since its magic, it can't be destroyed) Which Sybil saw when she looked into Peter's mind. But she hadn't found it in the river yet.

But that's because it was found when the police pulled Elena's parents out of the river, and had been sitting in storage all this time. So Caroline takes Sybil there after learning of the location from Matt, while Matt and his dad go to try and free the students. Turns out, Seline took the bell months ago since she had time to root around while she was disguised as a nanny. Needless to say, Sybil is pissed and almost gets the kids to immolate themselves, but Matt and his dad save them in time.

Sybil gets away by telling Caroline she might have a command still buried in her daughter's head, so can Caroline really be sure she can attack Sybil without dooming her kids? Before she leaves, she taunts Caroline about Stefan, that even if she gets him back, is it really wise? Caroline says Stefan has come back from being a ripper before, but Sybil brings up that it also means he's fallen off the wagon multiple times. And can she really risk that he might slip around her children?

Meanwhile, Matt is pretty pissed learning about his family lineage. Matt always felt like an outsider, not just because he wasn't supernatural, but because Elena and the Germ and Caroline and Tyler and even Stefan and Damon were members of the Founding Families, and he thought he was just a nobody. But apparently he was a legacy also, and he blames his dad for taking off and not letting him know about his ancestry. Maybe if Matt did, he would feel have a deeper connection with the MF gang. I mean, not sure how much more of a connection he needed, given he dated two of them and Tyler was his best friend. But maybe he wouldn't have been at odds with them as often as he ended up being if he didn't feel on the outside all the time.

Anyways, the Salvatore brothers are busy doing there thing, but Stefan feels like Damon's heart isn't it. And heh, so he purposely targets a young woman who looks like Elena (played by Alexandra Chando, who indeed looks a lot like Nina Dobrev and was one of the actresses in line to play Elena originally), a doctor, with parent who died tragically. He tells Damon he sees a darkness in her and thus is a prime target for Cade. And indeed, he compels her into thinking Damon was the drunk driver who killed her parents, and talks his brother down, all, "he's a piece of shit, if you save him he may kill someone else with his drinking!" (he dosed Damon with Vervain and wounded him in order to make Tara think he's dying)

And so she euthanizes Damon and Stefan gloats that he was correct about Tara being corrupt. I was going to say, compelling her into thinking Damon killed her parents seems like cheating. But I guess a good person wouldn't just murder their parents' killer in cold blood. And as we saw last ep, Cade didn't need Stefan to just collect bad people, he wanted Stefan to find people who were on the edge and give them that push so they could be taken.

He makes Damon toss out the Elena necklace (which he does but goes back for later) and kill Tara. While Damon gets the necklace though, Stefan totally falls off the wagon and slaughters the hospital Tara worked at.
