Black Mirror- Finally got around to watching this since I'd heard good things. It definitely has some interesting concepts. The first ep was okay. The next two eps of the first season really grabbed me though.
The second ep, totally didn't recognize Dutch from Killjoys at first, at least when they showed the "before she was famous" version of her in the commercials. I was all, woah, that lady is smoking. And then I realized, duh, its Dutch from Killjoys. But that was an intriguing world. Particularly the whole being forced to watch certain things, unless you have enough money to skip it. Like, why is it mandatory?
But yeah, that episode was pretty disturbing. Bing is living this humdrum, passionless life, and when he finally finds something to care about, something that means something, Way Hot from Downton Abbey, he gets her a ticket to get on the American Idol equivalent. She sings, and she's pretty good, but the judges tell her being good isn't good enough. She has to be phenomenal to make it. But, hey, she's hot, so why not become a porn star.
And so she does. It was pretty messed up to see how hollowed out she had become. And Bing is driven crazy, because he was just trying to do something nice for her, and he basically ended up ruining her life. And so he become determined, comes up with a plan to get on the show, and then holding a glass shard to his neck, threatens to kill himself unless he's allowed to say his speech.
He gives an impassioned criticism of their world... which the judges love, and they offer him his own TV show. Which, he takes, because hey, its better than being on the bike, and he gets to experience more than the cage everyone lives in. Though, wouldn't he eventually lose his edge, tanking his show?
The third ep, the idea of the grain was pretty interesting. Like, I couldn't do it, I already drive myself crazy with all the stupid things I've said and done, why would I want it preserved and be able to play it back any time with exact clarity?! Like just typing this reminded me of something I wish I could just scrub from my mind. But yeah, the way they used it was incredibly intriguing- like airport security, where the guards had them bring up their footage, I guess to see if they had dealings with persons of interest. Which also seems like a gross invasion of privacy, but its interesting nonetheless. Same with the grainless lady trying to call the cops, because she didn't have footage to show them, they ignored her.
But yeah, its kinda messed up what you could do with having perfect recall like that. And I don't mean the guy talking about jerking it to old memories. More like how you could drive yourself crazy. Obsessing over interviews, obsessing over your wife's interactions with her exes. And talk about awkwardness, like when he was showing the babysitter footage from the dinner and asking her opinion. I find my own memories awkward, why the hell do I want to watch someone else's crappy memories. As I said, I could never do it, I'd go nuts.
