The Expanse- So this is new on Syfy, which they've surprisingly put the first four eps up on their website for free. I'm normally wary of new sci fi shows, as there have been a lot of ambitious attempts in the past few years and they've never really grabbed me. The first ep ended on a cliffhanger that kept me watching. But wow, the second ep onward I was very much engaged. The first ep is all over the place, but that's to be expected from a pilot that's trying to establish things. And heh, it seems at first like three shows at once. The stuff with Holden and the Canterbury seemed like your typical spaceship drama, Detective Miller on Ceres was like future detective stuff, and Chrisjen on Earth was all political intrigue.
Obviously, the Holden stuff was the most exciting of the three. The Canterbury getting destroyed in the first ep was surprising, especially since the wolf chick from Being Human, who had been romancing Holden was still on the ship. Like she's a recognizable enough face that I didn't expect she'd be killed off.
But yeah, after that, it was pretty cool to see how all three seemingly disparate storylines came together. Since the Canterbury was destroyed, so was the water it was carrying, causing strife and unrest on Ceres. Then Holden and company suspect the whole trap they ran into was of Martian design, and since it was a Martian ship coming to rescue them, Holden broadcast that Mars blew up the Canterbury for all to hear.
Heh, I was amused that they made it seem like the transmission didn't go anywhere at the end of the second ep, but the beginning of the third ep, it was like, "Nope! Everyone heard it!" Which really lights a fire under the other two story lines. Like Ceres freaking loses its fucking shit, with people rioting and throwing blame on Mars (and Earth). Also, now that the circumstances of the Canterbury's destruction is better known, Miller finds out the ship used to lure it was the same ship the girl he's hunting for was last seen leaving the station in. Meanwhile, on Earth, they need to figure out what the hell happened, like if Mars just declared war, or if its someone nefarious trying to instigate something.
And Chrisjen is pretty shrewd and ruthless- she pretends to give some info to a friend who's a diplomat to Mars to warn them, but it was really just a ruse to get Mars to freak and take stock of their inventory of secret stealth ships. Which accidentally reveals the existence of said assets to Earth. So it does prevent a Earth/Mars war for the time being, because if the Martians were helping whoever blew up the Canterbury, they wouldn't have to check if they had stuff stolen. Still, this totally destroys her friend's career, who has now been banned from Mars, and he had been planning to retire there with his husband!
Back on Ceres, I was not expecting Miller's Earther partner to almost get killed. Like he seemed dead, but he apparently survives. Which, that seems like a very stupid move on the rioters part. Maybe those guys want the unrest, but shit, once corporate security gets wind of this, I'm guessing they're going to start busting heads big time.
And wow, whoever this mysterious third force is, they're pretty powerful to have built a fleet of vessels that could take on the flagship of the Martian freaking Navy! Ha, though it seems heavily implied that the bad guys are working with the Mormons, which is pretty hilarious. Like, when they had a random Mormon on Ceres, I thought it was just an offhand joke! But it might actually be a plot point- the Mormons hire a company to build colony ship to spread the word across the galaxy, but the bad guys might actually be secretly using that money and construction to build these snazzy new stealth warships.
Heh, I'm amused how graphic they were with Paulo Costanzo's character's death. I mean, you knew it was coming when he was trying to be all uplifting to secret Martian pilot guy. But then everything went silent, and you don't know what happened at first, then they pan to his headless corpse, with the blood floating out. And then ick, when artificial gravity was re-established, all that blood came splashing down back over his body. It was a little gratuitous!
But yeah, with Holden and his people narrowly escaping and the Mars Captain Lady scuttling the flagship, I definitely eagerly awaiting January to see how things turn out.
