Finding Carter- Wow, the season finale was actually interesting! So the first half, Carter finally saw Jared for the scumbag he is. Like he got out because he offered to give up names of the other dealers and the supplier and all that. Unfortunately, Ben is one of those dealers. Carter begs Jared not to turn in Ben, as he's innocent and was blackmailed into it. Heh, to be fair, she leaves the part out where he was blackmailed into it because he was trying to run a credit card scam on the bar.
But yeah, still, Ben was only a dealer because of Jared, so Carter was hoping Jared was a decent enough guy to not throw someone he dragged into this mess to save his won skin. And Jared agrees to not say anything at first Until Carter breaks up with him because too much has happened. And then he totally turns Ben in to spite her. He says he has himself to think about, but that's bullshit. I know the cops wanted him to turn everyone else in involved, but they don't know who's who. And all of a sudden he's about integrity, all, "Oh, they said everybody!" He tries to give his sob story about doing this for his daughter (whom we've never seen him with in the history of the show), but its not like if he didn't turn Ben, he'd go to jail. Putting Ben on that list was totally to get back at Carter.
Also, because Ben gets arrested, Lori loses custody of him permanently, and he's going back in the foster system. (Well, until David and Liz work their asses off to get custody since David is the biological father, so he's now living in the basement!)
But yeah, this is all a set up for the second half hour- in the last few minutes of hour one, Carter confronts Jared. He gets angry and shoves her, and she hits her head on the bar and is knocked out. When she comes to, Lori is there, and Jared is dead.
I think they did a decent job of setting it up so you don't know who killed him at first. I mean, Lori seemed like the obvious choice, but as soon as she confessed, and lied saying she did it because Jared was in the middle of strangling Carter after knocking her out, you knew it wasn't her. But there were tons of viable suspects.
Ben had made a comment to Carter about karma getting Jared, so he could've told the suppliers, and they could've come in and whacked Jared. But he also disappeared from custody. So he could have gone to the bar, and he is definitely someone Lori would cover for.
But then there's Max- Crash called Max looking for Carter, and Max figured she went to the bar. They kinda foreshadowed it in the first hour with Max and his mom, where she said he's always trying to be the hero, trying to save everyone. And sure enough, Max got to the bar as soon as Carter went down, and he hit Jared with a bottle, which ended up killing him.
Lori ended up covering for him, because she didn't want him to get jammed up. Sure, he was defending Carter, though the circumstances were vague enough if things went bad, he could face some serious time. Like Carter hit her head hard, and if Jared continued to assault her, she could've been dead. But we have no idea what Jared would've done next. People could argue Max could have just grabbed Jared, since he wasn't actually on Carter.
But he saw his friend in trouble and just reacted instinctively. He feels incredibly guilty about it though, wondering if he's like his father. Crash told him that's bullshit. The difference is, Max's dad hit him and his mom if they mouthed off at him, or did something to piss him off. Max only attacked Jared because he thought Carter was in danger.
Anyways, Lori wants to take the blame- she's feeling the weight of what she did to Carter, of screwing up with Ben because she didn't know all the trouble he was in. She prolly should've gone to jail for the Carter stuff, so she feels this is the universe righting itself. She thinks this is the best thing she can do for her kids, to sacrifice herself so they can have a better life.
And heh, Taylor feels exactly the same way! She's still pissed at Lori over everything, and if she has to go to jail so Max doesn't, great, since she feels Lori should be in jail anyways. The problem is, while Lori is fine taking the blame, Max isn't built that way. He can't let someone go down for something he did. And while Carter sees this, Taylor doesn't. Carter tries to explain that if they let this happen, the guilt will destroy Max. But Taylor loves him and doesn't want to lose him.
So, she goes to see Lori, saying they need to convince Carter, because once they do, she can get Max on board. She also asks Lori why she's doing this. Lori says she kinda feels like a mom to Max. Which to be fair, Max's actual parents were a mess, so hilariously, the child kidnapper was prolly the best parental influence he had. But its also because Taylor is still her daughter too, even if Tay would prefer that she wasn't. She hurt Taylor by kidnapping Carter and screwing up their family, so Lori wants to try and make it up to her by saving her boyfriend.
In the end, it doesn't matter, because Max has turned himself in. Taylor is devastated, but it was a sweet scene to see how many people Max actually had, because even David and Elizabeth were there for him.
Oh, also, Ben gets severely beaten by the supplier, because he's kinda a moron. Ben had gone to confront the guy, saying that now that Jared is gone, they're square. But nope, the supplier wants Ben to continue working for him. Which, why the eff does the guy want that trouble? There's prolly a dozen people he could get to deal, its not like Ben is anything special. So why purposely involve someone in your business who has such a messy personal life?
Also, wasn't Ben just doing all this to help out his foster sister? Like first, to get her into rehab, but then he was hoping she could live with him and Lori. But Lori couldn't afford it, so he wanted to make money so his sister could be taken care of. But heh, after everything that happened, and Lori losing custody, what will become of her? Isn't he worried where she'll live now? Is he going to ask the Wilsons if they have room for one more?!
