TV commentary:

Continuum- Series finale! Some deliciously cruel moments, but I think it was a mostly satisfying ending! Albeit a little bittersweet. Actually, the end-end was kinda heartbreaking. But yeah, it does seem like the writers had more planned. Or at least ideas that they were setting up that never came to fruition but they were forced to resolve in six eps. Mainly, the Traveler.

Also, did the show just forget about the freelancers? At first they seemed like timecops, with a hint that they may be working with the traveler. But this season, they were all but forgotten. Curtis didn't even mention them, he just acted like he was a disciple of the Traveler, with no mention of any further organization like the freelancers. But I digress, heh, they did try to quickly do the Traveler thing an ep or two ago all, "Oh, the Traveler is from the distant future, and he realized at some point there was a time fracture that destroyed that future, so he went to the past to fix things!"

Not that we really see him do a damn thing, other than sending Curtis around to be inscrutable. But yeah, I'm amused that at the end, he disappears and Curtis is all, "Cool, Kiera fixed everything, he can return to his time now!" Which mostly seems like the writers being all, "Crap, we added this stuff, but we can't leave it hanging, so lets just have a character be all, 'cool, everything is okay now!'" Its pretty thin, but its a resolution of sorts.

But onto the main characters. So, Carlos and the VPD are getting ready to take on the future soldiers. Kiera knows she can't keep asking him for favors, but she does manage to get Carlos to give her a half hour head start. Kiera bumps into Dillon, and she finally fesses up the truth about everything. And he accepts it! But ha, when she was all, "We came from the future to change things," all I can think of is the Liber8 ghosts watching and be all, "What do you mean, 'we', cop lady?!" But yeah, Dillon basically quits Piron and asks Carlos if he can join in on the raid.

At the warehouse, the future soldiers open the portal, only for it to short out and kill all but three of the travelers. One of which is a short haired girl named Grimes. Heh, the Simpsons has forever ruined that name for me, because I can never see that name without having "Ol' Grimy himself!" echoing in my head.

Anyways, Brad recognizes that these "refugees" were armed, so Zorin eventually fesses up that Marcellus lied to him. His family isn't waiting to come back, they just told him what he needed to hear. I guess I'm a sucker too, for believing that it possibly wasn't an invasion force and these guys weren't just traditional straight up bad guys.

Meanwhile, Kellogg recognizes he's still a prisoner and tries to weasel his way out of it. He tries to convince Vasquez to follow him instead of future Kellogg. They're the same, only he's younger and more virile. He makes promises of making her his queen, but he realizes his charms aren't working on her, so he just straight up stabs her with a corkscrew. As she lay dying, his vanity makes him ask why she was insusceptible to his charms. And she reveals the truth- she's his daughter. HA!!!

Whoops! Man, it must've squicked her out this whole time having a younger version of her dad constantly hitting on her. And hilariously, since she had mentioned that future him gave them instructions on how to deal with him, I can only imagine future Kellogg being all, "Watch out, because younger me, not knowing you're his daughter, will constantly be trying to get in your pants!"

I do feel a little sorry for Kellogg, accidentally killing his daughter like that. Particularly since he's actually resigned at this point all, "Of course she's my daughter and I end up killing her!" as if he's the butt of some joke by the universe. Oh, and during his conversation with her, he does mention the whole grandma getting killed in 2012 thing. It was nice of them to revisit old paradoxes. I guess that was just their way of trying to remind people that yeah, if you're in the past, it may change the future timeline, but you won't be uncreated or anything.

So, anyways, he escapes and meets up with Kiera. They get caught by Brad, but given that he realizes he's been lied to, he needs little convincing to join them. Also, the future soldiers for some reason must be giving the Piron security forces free reign of the warehouse, thinking they're on their side, because these guys are just wandering around openly. I mean, they let Kiera and Alec in, they contact Carlos and say they'll hit the future soldiers in a two pronged attack.

So they do, only it turns out to be a one pronged attack, as Kellogg's security just sits there doing nothing. Like they don't exactly betray the VPD (well, I guess they do, because the VPD was expecting more support), but they don't backstab them either. Not that they would've probably been able to do anything anyways, as Zorin actually removed one of the power suit energy cells which had been powering the gate (since the gate wasn't working properly anyways!) for the other future soldier guy to use in his power suit. At first, it does seem to be a foolish plan, because they can't really do anything without that cell, but he does end up decimating most of the VPD.

In the fracas, Kiera tries to get the future soldiers to stand down by threatening to kill Kellogg. The writers do try to act like the way they presented time travel makes sense, by talking about how the portal being open "tethers this time to the future" so any changes made now will change the future at the end of the portal. She tries to convince the future soldiers that Kellogg is a self centered opportunist, and if they get the gate online, Kellogg will try and use it to jump back to 2012, kill Kiera and Liber8 as soon as they arrive, and then try to influence younger Alec for his own ends. Unfortunately, Grimes sneaks up on them and takes Alec hostage. They end up forcing him to fix the key.

He does, and with most of the VPD taken out, the powersuited future soldier stands down so they can put the power cell back to open the gate. It comes online, and then Kellogg finally gives his men the order to kill everyone. In the chaos, Kellogg ends up shooting Dillon, and all the future soldiers except Brad and Zorin die. Outside, Garza had actually taken out a random Piron merc and was already to go in and kick ass.

But, Curtis stops her, he applauds her for being the one person who was unwavering from her cause. Heh, I guess he recognizes she's a total wrecking ball, so he basically tells her to chill- the future change she wanted is basically done, she just needs to sit back and relax. So she does.

Kellogg jumps through the portal, and heh, I was wondering why Zorin was all, "NO!" at first, but then I realized because now that he's longer in the now and they said the timelines were tethered, Brad's timeline is immediately snuffed out. There's a new future now, and Kiera goes through it. As mentioned earlier, the Traveler shows up for like a second, raises his hand, and disappears, and Curtis is all, "Yeah, that plot thread is totally resolved!"

Alec is unsure of what happened to Kiera after she stepped through the portal, but he's all now that we know what we know, we can build a better future. And who is "we"? Apparently him, and Carlos, and Jason, and Curtis, and Garza, and Brad. Even though the latter 3 have basically be considered enemies for the majority of the season/series. Also, isn't Zorin still around? What do they do with him?

I applaud Alec's ideals, and as we see, everything did work out for the better, but I'm a little skeptical. I mean, the warehouse was still of future tech, including an insane military power suit that dozens of people (well, at the end a handful?) of people know what it can do. I guess it is possible for Alec and crew to keep everything quiet, but I would think if any military or corp folks got wind of what was in there, it would a lot of work to stop them from getting their hands on that stuff. As I said, if there was work to be done, I guess they were successful.

Oh, at first Garza was all, didn't Kellogg jump through the portal, aren't we screwed? Well, if you were screwed, its not like you would know it, you'd all cease to exist. But yeah, turns out Kiera and Alec totally knew Kellogg was lying and tricked him. They knew he was watching them in the lab last ep. So, he totally set the time coordinates wrong, and ends up in the distant past, where there's not even a city of Vancouver, just a forest, and he's surrounded by natives.

Heh, they act all, "problem solved!" but this is Kellogg we're talking about! How were they not sure he wouldn't use his slipperiness and deviousness to make himself a god to the natives and cause some really wonky timeline changes. Again, since everything is fine, apparently not. I mean, I guess being unable to communicate with the natives, he can't use his silver tongue to his advantage. And this far in the past, I suppose he'd be hard pressed to really affect anything since there is no research and development for him to influence.

Anyways, Kiera appears in the future, and she meets Kagame. At first she thinks she failed because Kagame is there. But nope, apparently he's good and there is no Liber8. He mentions his "Uncle Julian", who I guess did positively influence young Kagame into not becoming a terrorist leader. Also, CSM Alec shows up, all upset he missed her entrance. He lets her know he ended up with Emily, and he shows a memorial dedicated to Carlos.

He tells her her son is safe! And here is where the brutal kicker comes in. Poor Kiera, as Doc would say, wasn't thinking four dimensionally. Alec tells her how her son has a bright future, because of her influence in the past. But he grabs her and stops her from seeing him, because there's a price. This isn't her future. This timeline's Kiera never went back in the past. So other her is happy with her son. Sam is safe, but she can never actually be with him, because he already has a mom.

So the show ends with Kiera knowing while she did make things better for her son and everybody, her traveling forward was all for naught, because she can't really go back to her life, because she doesn't have a life here, again because its not actually her timeline anymore.

As I said, a bittersweet ending. But since everything was mostly resolved, I thought it was okay. At the very least, I wasn't disappointed. I mean, sucks for Kiera, but truthfully, its not too bbv('This is total BS!') because we (or at least I) had a sneaking suspicion that things weren't going to work out exactly the way she wanted it.
