TV commentary:

Legend of Korra- Wow, lots of big surprises in book 3. Bumi develops air bending, and he's not the only one- ever since harmonic convergence a bunch of people have spontaneously developed air bending powers. So, Team Avatar goes about trying to recruit them, and failing miserably. Some of them are freaked out about their powers, some think its cool, but don't want to live the ascetic air nomad lifestyle.

Eventually they manage to get a recruit, a young kid named Kai, who's a little lying thief. He gives Team Avatar a story about being an orphan and how his parents died defending their village from outlaws. But it was obvious he was lying. They suss out the lie and offer to take him in in lieu of the cops arresting him. Bolin thinks of him as a little brother, and Jinora is totally crushing on him, but Mako, being a little thief himself when he was a kid knows the kid is a little shit.

They go to Ba Sing Se, which has kinda fallen into ruin. Or rather has a major difference in wealth between the rich and poor- the lower rings are awful, and the Earth Queen is a crooked bitch. Interesting though- she's not to happy with the Avatar, as apparently the Earth Kingdom was not to keen on Aang and Zuko turning portions of the Earth Kingdom into the New Republic.

Anyways, sure enough, Kai starts using his airbending to pickpocket people, and then ends up sending Mako and Bolin off to the lower ring. But it ends up being kinda a good thing- the brothers randomly end up bumping into their family and we find out about their history. Apparently their dad didn't want to work in a fruit stand his whole life, so he left, met a nice Fire Nation girl, and had Mako and Bolin (so now we know why Mako is a firebender and Bolin is an earthbender- I mean, I figured they had mixed parentage, but its nice to have the full details).

It is silly though- I guess their family knew about them this whole time, saw their exploits on the pro-bending circuit, and saw Bolin's movies and them hanging with the avatar, but never knew their parents were killed and they were orphans? Surely, if they were in the papers, it woulda come up in some interview. But ha, I did like how Bolin a few eps earlier, trying to convince Mako to come was all, "What if I were to bump into our grandmother? She'll be all 'But where is Mako?' and then die of a broken heart when you're not there!" I mean, it was done so jokingly, I didn't expect it to be foreshadowing that they'd find their family.

Ha, and you can't tell me they weren't trying to cater to the Korrasami shippers in the first ep. Hopefully they'll keep them as friends (I'm not holding out hope they'd actually go the Korrasami route) instead of them being all awkward over some boy. It was nice to see them team up to take on the "barbarian thieves".

But yeah, it was obvious from Korra's convos with the Earth Queen that she was a crooked bitch and was bleeding the people dry for her own comforts. Korra figures it out though, but alas, its not her place to be overthrowing governments. She does vow to find the Airbenders in Ba Sing Se, even though the Queen claims her Da Li have found no such people. Again, it was obvious the Da Li were prolly capturing them or something.

Indeed, when Mako and Bolin tell their family they were in Ba Sing Se looking for Air Benders, the family says the Da Li have been secretly grabbing them for some unknown reason. And heh, that little shit Kai gets his comeuppance when the Da Li capture him while he's thieving. Turns out the Queen is capturing them to form a new "air bending corps" who will fight for the Earth nation. Interesting, is she planning on moving against the Republic?

Meanwhile, we found out a criminal imprisoned by the White Lotus society, Zahir, was one of the people to develop air bending powers. He escapes and goes about breakout his former comrades. One is some guy who I'm not sure if he's a fire or earth bender- Zahir threw some rocks his way, but he turns them into kinda a fire-star thing. And then they go to break out an armless female water bender who can make watery arms to replace them.

And we finally see Zuko! He's chasing them down, and he has a dragon! But yeah, he goes to the Northern Water Kingdom and joins up with the twins to find the last prisoner, who's locked up in a secret ice prison. A fire bender who has the same being able to blow things up with her mind power as that one guy from AtLA. Ha, Zuko and Eska bond over both trying to kill the Avatar at one point. I also like how Desna and Eska aren't exactly good even though they sided with the Avatar last season- upon finding out about the secret prison, they express disappointment they were unaware of it since they coulda been tossing people in it this whole time.

The evil benders (who Zuko claims singularly are enough to take out anyone short of the Avatar, but together could take on the world) don't rescue her in any of these eps, but presumably they'll be showing up soon and Zuko and the twins will have to face them.

Oh, a few eps did leak a while ago, but I saw them the legal way- the new season started this past Friday. Nickelodeon showed the first three eps between 1900-2030. I don't know if they'll repeat it some time, or if its on on demand or their website, but since its officially out now, it should also be easier to find "through other means".

But yeah, now that its back, its normally scheduled for Friday night at 8pm. However, since next Friday is July 4th, the next new ep isn't until the 11th.

The new season is really good so far, so yeah, catch it however you can!
