The Americans- The Americans, I have underestimated you! Of all the possibilities, I DID NOT see that coming at all! Anyways, Larrick tracked the Jennings down, and Jared tries to get the jump on him with the gun he secretly had on him, but catches a bullet in the neck. But its enough of a distraction that the Jennings are able to overpower him and kill him.
(I'm also amused they tried to act like Larrick isn't a total bad guy- he wasn't there to kill the Jennings, he was just going to turn them in. He just wants justice for his fellow soldiers. Which is fine, its just funny that he isn't willing to kill the Jennings, but he's fine with cutting a swatch through a bunch of secondary and tertiary characters who are spy support. Like, he snapped Kate's neck because she spit in his face. He already had her subdued, why not stash her away if it was his intent just to expose the illegals?)
So we finally find out who killed the other spy couple... their own freaking son, Jared! It turns out the Center wanted to start a new program of "second gen" spies. Children of the illegals who's covers would be more infallible, because being born here, they have true American IDs. They went to Emmett and Lianne, demanding they bring Jared into the fold, but they refused. So, Kate recruited him under their noses, and he fell in love with her. And when his parents found out he wanted to do the whole spy thing, they freaked out. And he ended up killing them and his sister.
Claudia tells them as much later, saying if she was aware of it, she would've tried to fight it. But, its inevitable, the Center is demanding they bring Paige into the fold. The Jennings are all, "no fucking way!" Phillip actually goes up to Arkady personally and is all, if they come near their daughter, he and his wife are through. I can't remember, is this the first time we've ever seen them interact? I mean, supposedly the Jennings are getting the orders from the Center, but honestly, it always seemed like a totally separate part of the show that its weird to see them cross paths like that.
In the end though, Elizabeth is thinking, maybe recruiting Paige isn't a bad idea. She's looking for something, and her mom is thinking this will give fulfill her needs. Of course, I think that's total wishful thinking on their part, and honestly, I think Paige would just freak and turn them in.
Its funny, since to us actual Americans, particularly us who grew up in that time period, the Jennings are the bad guys. So I'm kinda torn- on the one hand, Phillip and Elizabeth are pretty bad-ass. Like I want Paige to find out that her parents aren't lame like she thinks. On the other hand, like I said, they're also "the enemy". Even though their politics is from a bygone era, Elizabeth's true belief does kinda grate on me. Like I love how menacing she can be, it just sucks she's working for the wrong side. I mean, I may like her as a spy, but I don't have to like her constant anti-American, anti-religion rants.
Other stuff, Fred dies even before the opening credits- he manages to get the paint sample to the Jennings, but is shot during the mission. So he bleeds out and dies.
And poor Nina, Stan totally screwed her over. He may love her, but not enough to betray his country. So, she's fucked- since the plan to use her to leverage him failed, the Center has no choice but to go ahead and take her back to Russia to be charged with treason or whatever she was up for.
But wow, pretty subtle show- Stan had a dream sequence, the most important part of which is I think Martha stealing files in the dream Its kinda weird, because Stan wouldn't have actually seen her do it from his point of view, it was behind his back. But its his dream, so if that whole thing occurred in his subconscious, his mind has to know it. Is this foreshadowing that he's going to figure Martha out next season? I mean, if Nina is gone, and his wife is divorcing him, he has nothing left but the job, and maybe now he won't be distracted and figure out what Martha's doing, and in turn find out about her secret husband, who of course he would know as Phillip if he ever saw him.
