Saw the Veronica Mars movie at the special fan event at Phipps plaza last night with [livejournal.com profile] clevemire. Phipps has definitely changed. Like there's a big Lego store next to the theater. And what's with their AMC having fancy barco-loungers for seating?

Anyways, I enjoyed the movie. I'm kinda sad now they couldn't get Leighton Meester to reprise her role as Sweet Knees (I think Leighton was filming something else at the time) since she had a relatively significant role. In fact, the main plot revolved around her. Well, her murder. So she didn't have that much screen time compared to the main characters but there were flashbacks and video footage.

But yeah, Carrie Bishop changed her name when she became a pop singer, so its like when Veronica sees on TV that pop singer "Bonnie Deville" died and they show images of her and there's recognition on Veronica's face, we only know its Carrie Bishop after Veronica tells Piz, "I went to HS with her, her name used to be Carrie Bishop!" It was slightly distracting for me, because whenever they'd show her character, I'd think, "That's not Sweet Knees!"

I had heard Rob Thomas actually had Leighton in mind when he came up with Carrie's storyline in the movie, since she had been dabbling in singing in real life, which is why they replaced her with a singer rather than another actress.

Anyways, I digress. When we start the movie, Veronica is interviewing with a big NY law firm with Jamie Lee Curtis playing some big higher up. Turns out, after the end of the series, with that sex tape scandal, Veronica transferred to Stanford, and then onto Columbia for law school. Which I thought the reason she was in Hearst was because of money issues. Like I can see her getting a scholarship or something to pay for Columbia LAw after matriculated the four years of college, but how could she afford to all of a sudden transfer to Stanford after her freshman year?

She's also with Piz, who apparently has some kinda job on the radio? (As for the rest of the gang, after Veronica left, he joined the Navy and became a fighter pilot, eventually hooking up with Carrie at some point, where they became a famous be volatile couple. Wallace is teaching at Neptune High, Mac worked for Sun for a while, but then quit to work for Kane Software, Weevil is out of the gang life and has a repair shop, a hot wife and a daughter.)

So Veronica has kinda moved on from that old life- she still talks to Wallace and Mac, who at the start of the movie had been begging her to come back home for the reunion. But she had no desire to re-visit her old life, now that she had a nice new one, free of drama.

But then Carrie gets murdered, and Logan's the main suspect, so he calls her for her help. Not to figure out who did it, but to help him find the right lawyer. So of course she comes running. And sorry, Team Piz, once she comes back and sees Logan, the writing is on the wall. Piz is a nice guy, good for her. But she's kinda an adrenaline junkie, despite her wanting to put it behind her, she thrives on the drama.

She delays her trip back to NY over and over, trying to figure out who did kill Carrie. Like Mac and Wallace invite Piz down to kinda force Veronica to the reunion, and when she does go she finds more clues about Carrie's death, including that some of her old classmates might be involved. She gets on the theory that Carrie was murdered because she was going to spill the beans on another classmate's death (her best friend, Susan Knight). Susan had apparently accidentally drowned on a boat, partying with Dick, Sean Fredrich, Luke, Gia Goodman, and a new guy who had supposedly been their classmate this whole time played by Haverchuck. He was apparently a skeezy drug dealer type who had a crush on Gia and whom we had never seen on the show.

But yeah, after figuring out Carrie was silenced because Susan didn't accidentally drown, she's like a dog with a bone, staying in Neptune until the case is cracked. Which pisses her dad off, because she had gotten out, and she doesn't want her dragged back in, because Neptune has become a cesspool. The police had become incredibly corrupt, covering things up for the richies and harassing the poor folks. (But more on this later, that's kinda the B-plot) She's so single minded on this case that she ends up flaking out on her new job offer with Jamie Lee Curtis' firm, so they pass on her. And she ends up breaking up with Piz, who's mad because she claims loyalty to her old friends as her reason for staying, she didn't want to let them down. And he's hurt, because he doesn't get that consideration. She wasn't worried at all about letting him down, even though he had invited his parents up to NY to finally meet her.

She's sad at breaking his heart, but not that upset, since her life with him, while good, was kinda boring. And she's rather be with Logan, drama and all. So basically, she torched her NY life.

Anyways. onto to Carrie's murder- turns out Susan had OD-ed on the boat, and the rest of them freaked out (except Dick, who had passed out, so he can continue to be "innocent") so Haverchuck's character Cobb told them they need to get rid of the body (which they weighed down with the anchor) and while they did, he secretly filmed them for blackmail purposes. Poor Gia, she was basically a beard for Luke, and forced to eff this Cobb guy all the time. And she was forced to help him kill Carrie.

Unfortunately, Cobb finds out she told, and shoots Gia (who dies! NO!) from his apartment across the way and tries to kill Veronica. She escapes, clears Logan's name and they're sort of back together- they eff a few times during the movie, but he has to go back on duty (he's still in the Navy). Meanwhile, she's staying in Neptune because of the B-plot.

Which is, the crooked police force. After the reunion, Weevil tries to help a scared Celeste Kane, who's being harassed by some bikers, having made a wrong turn and ending up in a bad part of town. But she freaks out when he knocks on her window and she shoots him. (not lethally, thankfully) However, while he's unconscious, the police plant a gun on him and she claims he was all threatening with it, and they lean on some of the PCH-ers to say they sold Weevil the gun he had on him, even though he had left that life a long time ago. So her dad is working that case.

He's been getting inside info from Deputy Sachs, but unfortunately, they see a dark figure across the way while having their secret meeting outside the Mars residence. They drive off, but are rammed by a truck. Its only through luck that Logan happened to be right there, about to visit Veronica that he's able to get Keith out of the car before the truck rams it again. Alas, Sachs dies (jeez, Carrie and Susan, Gia, Sachs, that's a surprising amount of death) and her father is in a coma.

He does eventually wake up, and it seems like Veronica is back in Neptune, taking over the family business while her father's recovering and prolly working on this whole police scandal thing and who killed Sachs/tried to kill her dad. So its kinda like a reset button taking things back to the status quo- she's back with Logan, and in Neptune, as a PI. (I was confused at the end if Mac was just helping out, or if she quits her high paying computer job to be Veronica's gal friday at the office) And hey, things are set up for a sequel.

Heh, they do reference the whole FBI thing when she was talking to Deputy Leo (who is now working in San Diego and thus not involved with the crooked Neptune police department), jokingly saying "maybe in another life" when he's all, "I heard you joined the FBI".
