Teen Wolf- Illuminating episode, we learn a lot. So Kira's mom fills us in on how the Nogitsune came to be. Turns out she was the person in that old picture, and she's 900 years old. Kira's dad is normal, he just met Kira's mom while research Eichen House. It looks like it was indeed an internment camp, but horrible events happened there that caused them to cover the fact up.
So anyways, Kira's mom, Noshiko, was just chilling at the camp, sometimes stealing supplies for her fellow detainees, and romancing a combat medic named Reese. While making out with Reese one day, she learned that a couple of the soldiers and the head doctor were selling medical supplies on the black market. This caused several of the detainees to die since they couldn't get the proper meds. Noshiko told everyone, which she immediately regretted, because it worked everyone up into a frenzy.
They attempted to lynch the doctor in a riot, but things calmed down. Until one of the crooked soldiers hit one of the old ladies in the camp. She had always advocated keeping cool, was constantly playing Go, not rocking the boat. Turns out she was doing that because she was a werewolf, one that was one from being bitten. As such she had less control. And being attacked like that made her rage- she grabbed a molotov cocktail from one of the rioters and tossed it, immolating Reese. Then all hell broke loose and the soldiers gunned down a bunch of people, including Noshiko.
She managed to survive, but she was weak. Reese had horrible burns, and since the doctor also sold all the morphine, he died in pain. The administration decided to cover it up, and since Noshiko was too weak to get revenge, she called on a nogitsune to possess her and grant her revenge. It came, but it unfortunately possessed Reese instead (hence why it looks like a burnt mummy now) and went on a killing spree. But, Noshiko and old lady wolf manage to kill him, breaking Noshiko's katana in the process.
Since she's not a thunder kitsune, she needs Kira to reforge the sword with her lightning powers. She bequeaths it to Kira, in the hopes she can slay Stiles. Of course, Scott thinks they can still save him. After they're gone, Noshiko exposits for the audience by explaining things to her husband, even though it sounds like her husband knows already. But yeah, she's all, "Those kids (Allison, Stiles, and Scott) don't realize they're the ones who let the Nogitsune out!" Turns out, when they did their thing at the end of the first half of the season, it allowed the Nogitsune to free itself, since she had buried it under that crazy tree.
Meanwhile, Derek and Mr Argent are finally released from jail, and they, the sheriff and Alison look for Stiles. Turns out he's not dying of dementia- those brain scans looked very similar to his mom's because they were his moms. The sheriff shares a nice moment with Alison when she admits she's really scared (the sheriff had said earlier he admired how fearless she seemed) and doesn't know what's she's doing, and he reassures her.
Anyways, the sheriff figures out that the nogitsune is a trickster. I mean, they know that already, but he sits them down and schools the rest of them on the full implications of that- he won't come at the straight on. Yes, he'll kill them, but death is a by-product of the chaos it sows, not the intent. I think the preview of the next ep was a good example of that, they show Chris ready to shoot Stiles, and the Sheriff ready to shoot him to protect his son- that's the kinda shit he's gonna try and pull off. He's not going to kill them, he'll sow enough confusion and discord that they end up killing each other, because its amusing to him.
Of course, the flashback kinda goes against that view a little already though, since Nogitsune-Reese went back to Eichen House after getting possessed and just straight up began slaughtering people. So who knows?
