TV commentary:
Glee- So according to Glee, Gaga=Edgy and Katy=Wholesome? In NY, Kurt decides to start a band since that Adam guy kicked him out of that one group upon hearing he and Blaine are engaged and he wants something to do. Dantana are in, but Rachel doesn't have her it in her just yet to do much in the wake of Finn's death. Funny Girl and school is all she can manage. So, Kurt holds open casting calls. Their only applicant though is "Starchild", played by Adam Lambert. He does a pretty intense performance of Marry the Night:
But Kurt thinks he's too showy and weird, so passes on him despite the amazing performance. He wanted a band that was more "mainstream", wanting acceptance for once, because acceptance=financial security. But the girls convince him how plenty off off the wall people hit it big, so he manages to find Starchild and offers him a place in the band. They also manage to convince Rachel to join by telling her Barbra managed to do so much even while doing Funny Girl back in the day. Which since it doesn't seem like any of them play instruments, that's like 4 vocalists, 1 guitarist (Dani), and the extras in the backing band? Oh, and they're called the Pamela Lansburys, courtesy of Rachel, after Pamela Anderson and Angela Landsbury.
Back in Lima, Will finds out the competition for Nationals, which include some previously unheard of big group called "Throat Explosion". There's some argument amongst the kids how they have to out-edge them, which will be difficult since while some of them are Gagas (Tina, Unique, Kitty, Jake) and the rest are Katys (Sam, Blaine, Kitty, Jake, and Artie). Will decides a good assignment for the week is to have the Gagas do a Katy song, while the Katys need to do Gaga.
Meanwhile, Sam is continuing to try and court Penny. Thinks don't go too well when she sees a True Jackson VP poster in his locker and he talks animatedly about the show and she talks about her ex who's a big Skrillrex fan. So he embraces the assignment to prove he's edgy enough for her. Meanwhile, Jarley are having similar issues, where Marley seems too vanilla and boring for Jake. But she doesn't want to change for a guy, she wants the guy she likes to like her for her.
So when they do their performance of Applause, Marley goes off book and performs as Califorina Gurls Katy:
Which gets her suspended (from school? from Glee club?) for not doing the assignment, even though she tells Mr Schue that her reasoning was that she didn't feel comfortable up there in some weird Gaga costume that exposes her body since she still has body image issues. Though its not like her Katy costume wasn't also kinda skimpy. But whatever, Glee. She did look cute in the pink wig. Which turns Jake on, so he totally wants to do it. But Marley's still not ready. He's all he's been very patient, but she's adamant. So he leaves and goes to Bree (who had totally been trying to get with him all ep), with the implication that they do it.
As for Sam and Penny, Penny admits she's not nearly as edgy as her ex-bfs, and Sam goes in for a kiss, so they're together now?
As for the Gagas, they have trouble trying to figure out what to do for the performance because all of them (except for Jake) keep trying to out-Gaga each other. So they instead to go for a totally unshowy, stripped down acoustic version of "Wide Awake":
In the end, Principal Sue suspends the club a week for running around in their costumes (and the backing band, just because?), since they're dress code violations. Mr Schue warns her not so start this feud again, since he always seems to win in the end.
Anyways, in the end, ND in Lima and the Pamela Lansburys in NY simultaneously do a rendition of :
