TV commentary:
Major Crimes- Pretty hilarious episode. Ha, Catalina thought Sanchez's name was Lopez! Yet he still has an incredibly goofy crush on her. I mean, she is hot, but get a hold of yourself man! Your friend just passed out!
But weird, so Rusty has a new friend played by that one Hunter's daughter from Supernatural. She's obviously interested in him, and it seems like he's interested in her, but then he lies and says he asked Sharon if he could go out on a date and she said no. Is he scared of the girl finding out the truth about him? He was asking about that one case, is he paranoid its a trick, or that him doing something with this girl, no matter how innocuous, could screw up the case?
Defiance- Crazy ep. I would think even without Stahma setting up Nolan (I can't believe she used Kenya like that, I thought she legit liked her) some one points a gun looking thing at the mayor, he would shoot him. At least the human members of the council saw it that way. But I guess that was the true point, not to have Nolan go down for accidentally killing a kid, but to have the mayor back him, and then expose his wartime "atrocities" to make her look like she supports a war criminal.
So he tries to throw himself on his sword, but Amanda refuses to throw him under the bus to save her campaign. Its kinda funny this whole giving up the badge thing, because how friggin big is Defiance supposed to be? And he, Tommy, and Irisa are like the only people enforcing the laws? Shouldn't he have some randoms helping them?
But wow, I did not expect Rafe have his men grab his son in law and kick the "peckerhead"'s ass and threaten to kill him if he acts in a matter "unworthy" of his daughter again. And Kenya feels betrayed, and she's all, "How can you be with a guy who treats you like shit", but she's projecting. Didn't she realize what a manipulative viper Stahma is? Datak seems like this ruthless bastard, but Stahma's the one pulling the strings.
Datak and the Earth Republic are counting their chickens before their hatched. Their plan to get the mines? When Datak becomes mayor, he says since the Irathients were not the native people who owned the land he claimed for the mining, it goes back to the state, and then deeds the land to the Earth Republic, for a sizable cut.
In the B Plot, Doc Yewell does some stuff with the Kaziri which causes weird stuff to happen to Irisa. And we see in flashback that when she was a kid, a silver version of that thing was implanted into her. Anyways, when Nolan takes his daughter to Yewell, the Doc claims she has a parasite in her which she needs to remove. But during the operation Irisa regains her faculties, beats up the Doc and runs off into the woods, following a young ghost version of herself. She collapses in the forest, where she's found by that one Irathient chick. (Didn't she run off with that husband of that Earth Republic chick?) But apparently even though she blew town, she saw what Nolan did to Sukar, and the ep ends with her contemplating chopping Irisa's head off.

Date: 2013-07-02 04:28 pm (UTC)But wouldn't it be kinda weird for her to bet against Provenza in that case then, because basically then they're taking bets on whether Rusty is gay or not, which wouldn't that be kinda offensive since the show kinda puts them up as his faux-parents? Like co-workers wondering on a show if someone they know is gay does seem to happen for comedic effect. But here it would be the kid's father figure and mother figure betting on whether he asks out a girl and the mother doing it because she knows the son is gay. Which would be really weird. Plus, its not like Provenza isn't privy to the same info Sharon has. Particularly since that info is gay prostitution- like its not like Raydor seeing little things pointing to Rusty being gay and Provenza turning a blind eye to it, they both know he was having sex with men for money.
At the very least, I figured Sharon was betting against Provenza because she thought the whole thing between Rusty and Chris was platonic, and Provenza was just being the "excited dad" thinking his son was about to put the moves on someone. Like if Chris was a boy, I think Provenza would make the same bet- despite the fact that Rusty has already had a lot of sex for money, I thought Sharon still thinks of Rusty as a kid (I mean, he still is a kid) and she was being all, "he's not growing up and thinking of other girls (or boys) that way yet!"
After all, when they were spying on him and it seemed like he was going to ask Sharon for permission to go out with Chris, it didn't seem like she was surprised he likes girls, it seemed more like excitement like its a totally mother/son thing to ask her for permission to go out on a date.
But I digress, I guess your point to begin with was whether or not the show was establishing Rusty as gay, not whether everyone else thought he was gay. And I think the show was not necessarily saying he was gay despite all the gay sex- he could be gay, but like I said, the gay prostitution thing wasn't definitive proof for me. It just that women prolly troll the streets for prostitutes way less than dudes, so I figured he'd have to take men if he wanted to make any real amount of money.

Date: 2013-07-02 05:43 pm (UTC)Near the end, after Sharon won the bet, she said something like "my daughter, when she was Rusty's age, tried dating the boys from her ballet class. It didn't go so well."
And I agree with you that the whole prostitution thing doesn't necessarily mean he's gay. But one has to assume a gay kid would be more likely to consider that.
